Usually, no: data carried over ordinary Wi-Fi does not count toward your mobile carrier’s cellular data usage. Your bill’s mobile-data figure tracks traffic carried over the carrier’s network, not traffic sent through a Wi-Fi connection. Exact bill displays and plan rules vary, so use your carrier’s usage page to check the figure for your line and billing period.
Why ordinary Wi-Fi usually does not appear as mobile data
Wi-Fi and cellular data are different ways for a phone to reach the internet. When your phone sends data through a Wi-Fi network, that traffic uses the Wi-Fi network’s internet connection. Carrier mobile-data accounting concerns traffic carried over the carrier’s mobile network.

Verizon says its Data Utilization tool covers data used on the Verizon mobile network, not Wi-Fi usage. Rogers likewise says Wi-Fi data is not displayed in the bill usage information described on its support page. These statements describe those providers’ services; another carrier may present its usage information differently. Verizon’s Data Utilization guidance · Rogers’ bill usage guidance.
When internet activity can count against your mobile-data allowance
Cellular data is enabled
When an app or service uses the carrier connection, that activity can count as mobile data even if you also use Wi-Fi at other times. Apple Support puts it this way: “When cellular data is on, apps and services use your cellular connection when Wi-Fi isn’t available.” Apple’s explanation is in Use cellular data on your iPhone or iPad.

Wi-Fi Assist switches to cellular
An iPhone’s Wi-Fi icon does not guarantee that every transfer stayed on Wi-Fi. Apple says Wi-Fi Assist can switch to cellular data when Wi-Fi connectivity is poor. That fallback may add cellular usage, with any resulting charge or allowance impact depending on your plan. See About Wi-Fi Assist.
You use a cellular hotspot or roam
Tethering a laptop or another device through your phone’s cellular connection is still cellular data. AT&T separately identifies cellular hotspot usage, while Rogers’ usage guidance includes use on its network and roaming on a partner network. The way hotspot and roaming use is counted or charged depends on the provider and plan. AT&T’s data usage guidance · Rogers’ bill usage guidance.

Which usage counter should you trust?
Your phone’s counter can help identify which apps use cellular data, but it is not necessarily the billing total. A device counter may measure a different period, cover only that device, or use an estimate that differs from the carrier’s recorded usage. Apple recommends contacting your carrier for the most accurate current-period cellular usage. Verizon also distinguishes its usage categories from bill units and directs customers to My Verizon or #DATA for actual usage; its Data Utilization categories are typically updated within 48 hours, rather than in real time. That update timing applies to Verizon’s tool, not to every carrier’s meter. Apple’s cellular-data guidance · Verizon’s Data Utilization FAQs.

On iPhone
- Open Settings, then tap Cellular or Mobile Data (the label can vary by region).
- Review the app-level cellular data figures to see which apps have used the carrier connection.
- Check the Wi-Fi Assist setting if you are investigating cellular use while on a weak Wi-Fi connection.
- Compare the phone’s figures with your carrier’s usage page for the same line and billing period.

Android menu names and available usage views vary by manufacturer and operating-system version. Some device manuals show separate mobile-data and Wi-Fi usage screens, but a phone’s measurement may be approximate and differ from the carrier’s total. Look in your device’s Settings for its data-usage controls, then use the carrier’s account page as the billing reference. The cited device manual documents separate usage views and cautions that the phone measurement may differ from actual usage.

- Open the carrier’s usage meter and confirm that it shows the correct line and billing period.
- Review app-level cellular data on the phone and note any apps with unexpectedly high use.
- On iPhone, check whether Wi-Fi Assist could have switched traffic to cellular during a weak Wi-Fi connection.
- Check whether the activity involved a cellular hotspot or roaming, then compare it with your plan’s rules.
- If the phone and carrier totals still differ, ask the carrier how it recorded usage for that bill period and whether its records are delayed.
For billing reconciliation, the carrier’s meter is the relevant reference: the phone’s counter and the carrier’s figure can differ in measurement, time period, and scope. Apple directs customers to their carrier for the most accurate current-period total.
