Upscaling can make lower-resolution video look cleaner or less jagged on a higher-resolution screen, but it cannot guarantee recovery of detail missing from the source. The result depends on the source, the processing method, the display, and what you prefer to see.
What upscaling does—and what it cannot do
A display has a fixed pixel grid. When a video has fewer pixels than the screen, a scaler enlarges the image to fill that grid. Conventional scaling interpolates or filters existing pixels; it can smooth jagged edges, but may leave the picture looking soft. NVIDIA’s explanation of AI upscaling describes learned models that predict higher-resolution pixels based on patterns in the input.

Those predicted pixels can make an image look crisper, but they are plausible additions—not proof that the detail appeared in the original scene. A sharper-looking result is not automatically a more faithful one.

The source sets the ceiling
Upscaling cannot turn a poor source into a clean, detailed master. RTINGS tests TV scaling using 720×480 video and notes that even the better-performing TV in its illustrated comparison does not make the low-quality source look great. Results vary by TV and source; a label such as “4K” does not tell you how well a particular model handles lower-resolution material. RTINGS’ upscaling test description explains its method and examples.

Compression defects may remain visible
Resolution and compression are separate issues. Enlarging a picture does not, by itself, remove blockiness or other encoding defects; it can make them easier to notice. Some processing systems combine scaling with artifact reduction. NVIDIA says its RTX Video Super Resolution analyzes frames, enhances edges and features, and detects and removes compression artifacts, but this is a vendor description of that implementation, not a guarantee for every clip. NVIDIA also notes that results vary with content and that the feature uses GPU resources. NVIDIA’s RTX Video FAQ lists product-specific behavior and requirements.
Sharpening has a trade-off
Too little sharpening can leave edges soft; too much can create halos, harsh outlines, or an artificial look. RTINGS advises making only modest sharpness adjustments and stopping when halos or harsh lines become apparent. A clean edge is useful only if it does not come at the expense of natural texture.

Content and viewing conditions matter
Fine text, foliage, film grain, faces, animation, and fast motion expose different strengths and weaknesses. A 2016 IEEE study on perceived 4K-versus-HD video quality discusses factors including sensor noise, fast-moving objects, deliberately blurred regions, encoding artifacts, and image size. Those findings provide context, not a universal ranking of today’s TVs or upscaling algorithms. The IEEE study is specific to its own date and test conditions.
How to compare upscaling fairly
Whether you are comparing a TV’s built-in scaler, a playback device, or GPU-based enhancement, use the same source and viewing setup. Change one processing option at a time so you can tell what caused the difference.

- Choose representative material. Try the kinds of video you actually watch: a low-resolution stream, a clean 1080p source, fine text, detailed textures, and motion. Avoid judging from different scenes or different copies of a video.
- Keep the setup constant. Use the same display, screen size, viewing distance, and picture settings. Compare at your normal viewing distance, not only close up.
- Toggle the processing. Switch the scaling or enhancement setting on and off, or compare systems side by side. Look for preserved texture and stable detail, as well as blur, jagged edges, halos, and visible compression defects.
- Adjust sharpness conservatively. If the image is too soft, make a small change. Back off if you see bright outlines, harsh lines, or unnatural texture.
- Try noise reduction only when needed. On visibly noisy, low-quality material, test it and disable it if it smears the picture or removes fine detail.
- Check the playback chain. If more than one device can scale the picture, confirm which device is doing the work. For GPU-based enhancement, check the product’s compatibility requirements and account for GPU use.
RTINGS’ own comparison tests use selected details such as roof shingles and boat names in 720×480 material, then assign a subjective score. That illustrates why a single resolution number cannot describe how convincing an upscaled picture looks.
What the numbers do—and do not—tell you
There is no established universal percentage of viewers who prefer upscaled video across different devices, sources, and methods. Objective measurements can help assess particular properties, but they do not settle preference by themselves. Sony Interactive Entertainment notes that higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) does not necessarily mean better perceived visual quality. Its 2025 research summary reports results for a neural-wrapper video-compression approach, including an 18.5% average BD-rate saving across objective scores and improved mean-opinion scores over two standard codecs. Those are compression research results, not a consumer upscaling benchmark. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s research summary describes the work.

NVIDIA reported in January 2025 that an updated RTX Video Super Resolution model used up to 30% fewer GPU resources at the highest quality setting. That is a vendor-reported resource-use comparison, not a 30% improvement in visual quality. NVIDIA’s FAQ provides the product details.
How to choose a display or enhancement method
If you regularly watch DVDs, 480p video, or low-bitrate streams, model-level scaling performance matters more than an “AI upscaling” label. Compare the same clips on the actual options where possible, and prioritize the one that preserves detail without emphasizing defects. For GPU-based enhancement, include supported hardware and software, GPU load, and the possibility of scaling being applied more than once in your decision.
