Yes. Seeding uses outbound internet data when your torrent client uploads file pieces to other peers. How much it sends depends on peer requests and how long you leave the torrent active; it is not automatically limited to the size of the downloaded file.
What seeding sends over your connection
BitTorrent distributes files peer to peer: people downloading a torrent can also upload pieces to other participants. Once your download is complete, the client can keep sharing those pieces as a seed. The protocol describes data moving between peers in both directions, and a downloader continues uploading until it exits the torrent job or client. The data sent while seeding is outbound transfer. Your provider’s plan and accounting rules determine whether and how that transfer counts toward a data allowance; there is no universal billing rule established here. Check your provider’s plan terms or usage dashboard.
How much data can seeding use?
There is no fixed hourly or monthly amount. Upload totals depend on whether other peers request pieces, how much they request, and how long the torrent remains active. An upload-speed limit restricts the rate of transfer, not the total amount over a billing period; a low rate can still accumulate if the client runs long enough.

A share ratio is uploaded data divided by downloaded data. A ratio of 1.0 means the client has uploaded as much as it downloaded. BitTorrent recommends sharing until reaching at least that ratio, but this is the vendor’s sharing recommendation—not a universal protocol requirement or a guarantee that the amount uploaded will equal the file size. The same help page says there is no defined duration for seeding.
Why an app may report more data than the file size
A torrent client’s reported use can exceed the completed file’s size for more than one reason. BitTorrent says some incoming data may be unrequested and discarded, and that seeding uploads can add to total transfer. Its explanation, modified October 24, 2022, does not quantify either factor. To measure your own connection, note the client’s uploaded total and compare it with your device, router, or provider usage meter over the same defined interval. Their totals may differ because they measure at different points or use different accounting rules.
How to stop or limit seeding

BitTorrent mobile app
Use the app’s pause control for the individual torrent or pause all torrents to stop further seeding from those jobs. Menu names and placement may vary by app version.

qBittorrent
qBittorrent offers global upload-rate limits, alternative limits for selected times, and share-ratio limits that can pause or remove torrents. Consult the project’s Explanation of Options for the installed version, since labels and settings can change.
If your goal is to prevent uploads immediately, pause the torrent. If you want continued sharing but less bandwidth use, set an upload-rate limit. For a defined sharing target, configure a ratio limit and choose whether reaching it should pause or remove the torrent.
