As of October 4, 2026, Thunderbird has not confirmed that its iOS app will support desktop add-ons or match desktop features. The iPhone and iPad app is still in development, and its initial roadmap focuses on core email. That means add-on compatibility is unannounced—not confirmed, but not ruled out forever.
Is Thunderbird for iOS available yet?
No. Thunderbird’s FAQ says iOS development is in progress and that the team will announce when the app is ready for users. In an October 1, 2026 first-look post, Thunderbird said it hopes to have a first version ready for community testing “in the next few months.” That is a development goal for community testing, not a confirmed App Store release date. Can you use desktop Thunderbird add-ons on iPhone or iPad?
There is no official confirmation that desktop extensions or themes can be installed in Thunderbird for iOS. Thunderbird’s official iOS material does not publish an iOS add-on catalog or promise desktop add-on compatibility. Because the app is still being developed, that does not establish that support will never be added; its future status is unknown.
On desktop, Thunderbird defines an add-on as either an extension, which adds functionality or changes how the app works, or a theme, which changes its appearance. Extensions can add interface elements, affect content, or run background tasks, and some use Thunderbird-specific APIs. The desktop catalog includes tools for areas such as calendars, contacts, message composition, reading, and privacy. Those listings describe desktop add-ons; they do not establish iOS support. Should you expect the iOS app to have the same features as desktop?
No. Thunderbird says the iOS client is being built as a native app from scratch rather than by reusing existing code. That explains why desktop feature parity should not be assumed, but it is not a definitive list of what the finished iOS app will or will not include. Thunderbird’s October 1, 2026 first look

| Capability | Official iOS status | What that means for readers |
|---|---|---|
| Account setup and IMAP | Account creation and the IMAP protocol/framework are shown as shipped in the roadmap. | Roadmap status is not the same as public app availability. |
| Reading and writing email | Active work; core reading and composition are central to the first-version scope. | These are priorities for the initial app, not a guarantee of a public release date. |
| OpenPGP and S/MIME | Included in the roadmap scope for initial email capabilities. | The roadmap does not establish that these are already available to users. |
| JMAP | Exploration or planned, depending on the roadmap listing. | Do not treat it as a confirmed first-release capability. |
| HTML signatures and swipe actions | Listed as planned work. | Planned does not mean available in a public version. |
| Calendar | Listed as exploration. | A calendar feature is not confirmed for the initial release. |
| Desktop add-ons | No iOS support announcement or catalog is provided in the official material reviewed. | Compatibility remains unconfirmed. |
The official iOS roadmap cautions that timelines may shift. The 2026 mobile roadmap lays out the broader mobile priorities and stages.

What to check before planning a switch
- If a particular desktop extension is essential, do not assume it will work on iOS; wait for an explicit compatibility announcement.
- If you need calendar, JMAP, signatures, or swipe actions, check the roadmap for their current status rather than treating them as launch features.
- For release timing, rely on a new Thunderbird announcement. The October 2026 community-testing goal is not a public launch date.
