The September 29, 2026 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered update made some existing mods incompatible at release. CD PROJEKT RED specifically warned that mods containing XML files, script files, or w3strings would not work unless updated. That does not mean every mod is broken: check compatibility for the exact game build, platform, and mod you use.
What changed with the Remastered update?
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered released on September 29, 2026. CD PROJEKT RED says it is a free upgrade for eligible owners on the platforms listed in its release announcement, which also describes cross-platform mod support.

In its Cross-Platform Mod Support guide, CD PROJEKT RED Technical Support stated: “Mods containing xml files, script files, or w3strings will not work upon the release of the update.” The guide says REDkit includes a way to update those mods. This is release-time guidance, not a claim that the files remain incompatible after their authors update them.
Compatibility is specific to each mod and its version, the installed game build, and the platform. The in-game Mods menu is not the same thing as every legacy PC mod installed through other methods, so do not assume that subscribing to a mod there fixes or replaces a separately installed mod.

How to check whether a mod is compatible
- Identify your installation. Note the platform and the game version or build shown by your launcher or store. “Latest” can mean different things across platforms and editions.
- Protect your saves. Make a separate backup of important saves before changing a modded installation. Keep the original mod files or configuration where possible so you can undo the change.
- Check each mod’s own page. Read its latest description, requirements, release notes, and relevant comments for explicit support for your installed build and platform. Look for updates to XML, script, or w3strings files, and check dependencies and stated conflicts.
- Check the console marker when relevant. For the official cross-platform Mods menu, CD PROJEKT RED says to look for the “Available on consoles” tag on the mod’s page. Do not assume a PC mod is console-compatible.
- Compare before loading a shared save. If you use cross-progression, confirm that the same required mods are enabled on both devices and that each is supported on the destination platform.
More than 450 mods had been newly released or updated since September 29, according to PC Gamer senior editor Wes Fenlon’s count in a report published October 1, 2026. That dated count signals active updates; it does not establish that every listed mod works on every build or platform. See PC Gamer’s report for its context.
How to isolate a crash or other mod problem safely
If an issue began after updating the game or a mod, use reversible changes to find the cause rather than changing several things at once. This is general isolation advice, not a troubleshooting procedure published or tested by CD PROJEKT RED.
- Back up your saves and preserve the current mod list and configuration.
- Disable or remove mods that lack confirmation for your exact build, starting with recently updated or script-, XML-, or w3strings-based mods.
- Launch the game and check whether the same problem remains. If it does, the disabled mods may not be the cause.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable confirmed mods in small groups. When the issue returns, narrow down that group and review the affected mods’ dependencies and conflict notes.
- If the problem persists with mods removed, contact the support channel for your platform. Include the platform, game version, mod list, and when the issue started. The guidance cited here does not establish a universal rollback, repair, or reinstall method.
Using the official in-game Mods menu
CD PROJEKT RED says its in-game Mods menu is powered by mod.io and is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Installing through that menu requires a CD PROJEKT RED account linked to mod.io. Follow the publisher’s official setup guide for the current account and menu steps.

The guide says subscriptions sync across platforms, but unsupported console mods are ignored. A modded save can be accessed offline if its required mods are already installed; new mods cannot be installed while offline. Saves created with mods enabled are marked with a mod.io cog icon.

For a save moving between platforms, enable the same mod set on both devices and confirm that each mod works on the destination platform. CD PROJEKT RED warns that if a mod is missing or incompatible on the target platform, the save may not load correctly.
The publisher also says trophies and achievements are disabled on consoles when playing modded save files. Consider that before enabling mods on a console save for which you want achievements.

The REDkit changelog lists version 5.0.1042178, dated September 29, 2026. Its notes describe Witcherscript scope-based overrides, which let script mods specify a scope and add or override functions at runtime, and script blobs, which compile script mods into small blobs loaded at game start. These are creator-facing capabilities; they do not automatically update every existing mod.
