Why the answer depends on your S20+
Samsung’s global launch announcement names the Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra as eSIM-supported models, while also noting that availability varies by country and carrier. That makes “the S20+ supports eSIM” a useful family-level answer, not a promise that every regional variant can activate one.

Samsung’s regional support information illustrates the difference: its Japan supported-device list omits the S20+, while its Ukraine list includes the S20 family and warns that a device’s country of origin can affect availability. A listing from another country therefore cannot settle compatibility for your handset.

How to check whether your specific phone can use eSIM
- Find the exact model number. Look in the phone’s About phone or device information screen. Do not rely only on the “Galaxy S20+” product name.
- Establish the phone’s market of origin. Check where it was sold or intended for use, since regional variants and Samsung’s support lists differ.
- Check Samsung support for that market. Use the regional device and carrier information relevant to the phone, not a list for a different country.
- Ask your carrier to verify the exact model and plan. Confirm that it will activate eSIM on that model and that your intended wireless plan supports eSIM. Samsung says both country and carrier affect availability, and a service plan is required.
For example, Samsung’s US business support page identifies the unlocked S20+ 5G model SM-G986U1 and describes its physical tray as “SIM + Micro SD.” That model-specific specification is useful for identifying a variant, but it does not independently confirm eSIM eligibility for a particular carrier or plan.
How eSIM works with the physical SIM and microSD tray
Samsung UK says the S20 range has a hybrid SIM tray and supports eSIM. For the configurations covered by its guidance, the phone can use a physical SIM in slot 1; a physical SIM plus microSD; two physical SIMs; or one physical SIM, a microSD card and eSIM. These options describe the UK guidance and should not be assumed to apply identically to every regional model.

The practical limit is two active SIMs at once. The configuration with one physical SIM, microSD and eSIM does not mean the phone can run two physical SIMs plus an eSIM simultaneously. Samsung’s UK guidance also says that the physical-SIM and microSD arrangement depends on the tray configuration.

- The S20+ model family is listed by Samsung as supporting eSIM.
