No. The Ryzen 5 9600X needs a separate CPU cooler, but an all-in-one (AIO) liquid cooler is not required for stock operation. AMD recommends a premium air cooler for optimal performance, and Tom’s Hardware says mid-frame tower air coolers are sufficient at the processor’s default power envelope. Choose an AIO if its layout, appearance, or cooling headroom suits your build—not because the 9600X demands one.
What cooler does the Ryzen 5 9600X require?
The 9600X does not include a thermal solution, so you must provide a CPU cooler. AMD’s product listing states: “Premium air cooler recommended for optimal performance.” It does not specify that the cooler must be liquid-based. AMD’s Ryzen 5 9600X specifications list the AM5 socket and a default 65 W TDP.

TDP is a product specification, not a guarantee that package power will equal 65 W in every workload. AMD also lists a 95°C maximum operating temperature (Tjmax); that is the published maximum specification, not a temperature a build should aim to reach.

Is an air cooler enough at stock settings?
Yes. Tom’s Hardware reports that mid-frame tower air coolers provide sufficient cooling for the 9600X at its default power envelope. For a typical stock build, an AM5-compatible tower air cooler is therefore a sensible starting point. The exact cooler still needs to fit your case, motherboard, and memory.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
One review result illustrates why a single temperature should not be treated as a universal prediction: Tom’s Hardware measured a peak of 88 W and a maximum of 69°C during its reported multithreaded tests, with a Corsair iCUE Link H150i RGB in the test system. Those readings reflect that review’s platform, workload, room, and cooling setup; they do not predict the temperature in every 9600X build. Tom’s Hardware’s Ryzen 5 9600X review does not provide a controlled air-versus-AIO comparison using a named air cooler.
When might an AIO make sense?
An AIO can suit a build for reasons other than basic stock cooling. Consider one if a radiator-based layout works better for your case, you prefer its appearance, or you have a specific noise preference. It may also be part of a high-power tuning plan, but stock results do not establish what cooling a tuned system needs.

- Efficient, Low-Noise Pump: Keeps your coolant circulating at a high flow rate while generating a whisper-quiet 20 dBA
- Convex Cold Plate with Pre-Applied Thermal Paste: The slightly convex shape ensures maximum contact with your CPU’s integrated heat spreader, with thermal paste applied in an optimised pattern to speed up installation
- RS120 ARGB Fans: RS ARGB fans create strong airflow and high static pressure, with easy ARGB control via a compatible motherboard. CORSAIR AirGuide technology and Magnetic Dome bearings ensure great cooling performance and low noise
- Easy Daisy-Chained Connections: Reduce the wiring in your system by daisy-chaining your RS ARGB fans and connecting them to just one 4-pin PWM fan header and one +5V ARGB header
Compare specific models on practical criteria rather than assuming that liquid cooling is automatically quieter, longer-lasting, or cooler:

- Fit: Check radiator thickness and mounting position, as well as available space around the motherboard and memory.
- Noise: Look for measurements made at a stated workload and distance; the cited sources do not establish a controlled noise advantage for either cooler type on the 9600X.
- Installation: An AIO adds a pump, radiator, and tubes to position. Treat these as build considerations, not evidence of a particular failure rate.
- Value: Compare total local prices, including fans and mounting hardware. Current prices and stock are not established here.
- Tuning: If you raise power limits or use PBO or manual tuning, evaluate cooling for those settings rather than relying on stock-operation guidance.
What should you check before buying?
AMD specifies the AM5 socket, and Tom’s Hardware says existing AM4 and AM5 coolers are compatible. Still, compatibility depends on the specific cooler and its mounting hardware, so verify the manufacturer’s AM5 support before purchase. Also confirm physical clearance: cooler height for an air tower, or radiator dimensions and mounting location for an AIO, plus any memory or motherboard interference.
