The Radeon RX 9070 XT supports hardware ray tracing and AMD’s machine-learning upscaling, known as FSR 4 at launch and now called FSR Upscaling by AMD. Whether you can use each feature depends on the game’s implementation and, for some features, its driver and API requirements.
What the RX 9070 XT supports
| Capability | RX 9070 XT support | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| FSR 4 / FSR Upscaling | Yes | AMD lists ML-powered FSR Upscaling for Radeon RX 9000 Series cards, including the RX 9070 XT. A particular game must also support the feature. |
| Hardware ray tracing | Yes | AMD specifies 64 ray accelerators in the card. This confirms hardware capability, not a particular frame rate in any game. |
AMD’s current FSR technology documentation says FSR 4 has been renamed FSR Upscaling to distinguish it from the other technologies now grouped in the FSR “Redstone” suite. “FSR 4” remains a useful term when looking for older launch coverage or settings references.

FSR upscaling and ray tracing do different jobs
Ray tracing renders lighting effects using ray-tracing hardware. Upscaling instead reconstructs an image from a lower internal render resolution, which can help balance image quality and rendering workload. Using FSR upscaling does not turn ray tracing on, and having ray accelerators does not guarantee that a game offers FSR.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. These are distinct capabilities; support for one should not be taken to mean a game supports all of them. In particular, FSR Ray Regeneration is not another name for enabling ray tracing.

Why support can vary from game to game
GPU compatibility is only one part of the answer. A game must integrate the relevant FSR feature, and some upgrade paths have additional requirements. AMD’s live supported-games list describes title-specific feature support and notes conditions such as required FSR integration, DirectX 12 support, and driver eligibility for some upgrades. The list can change, so check it alongside the game’s graphics menu and current driver information.
- Find the game on AMD’s supported-games list and confirm which FSR feature it lists.
- Check the game’s own graphics settings for the available upscaling or ray-tracing options.
- Confirm the game and graphics driver meet any stated requirements for that feature.
What the hardware specification does—and doesn’t—tell you
AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 XT specifications list 64 ray accelerators. That is a hardware count, not a benchmark: it cannot tell you how smoothly a specific game will run with ray tracing enabled. Actual performance depends on the game and settings, including resolution, ray-tracing options, upscaling mode, and whether frame generation is used.

AMD’s March 2025 RDNA 4 reference guide characterizes ray-tracing throughput as double that of RDNA 3, based on AMD’s architecture specifications as of December 2024. This is AMD’s architecture-level comparison, not an independent test or a promise of a twofold improvement in every game.
