What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. The PS4 can send audio over HDMI, and PlayStation documents surround output over DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) on compatible models. The right connection and channel count depend on your console revision, connected equipment, and audio content.
How PS4 surround sound works
HDMI is the usual connection: the PS4 sends audio and video through its HDMI output to a TV or home theater receiver. PlayStation says audio format is optimized automatically for the connected device. If you want sound from a multi-speaker system, the receiver or TV must also accept and pass a compatible format; PlayStation does not certify particular third-party equipment.

Optical audio is another documented route, but it is not available on every PS4. PlayStation’s North American FAQ says the console can output 5.1 through DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL), while its Europe FAQ says 5.1 or 7.1 through that output. Both statements date to October 30, 2013, and PlayStation does not explain the difference. Treat them as region-specific capability statements, not a guarantee that every model, game, and receiver will deliver the same channel layout. North American FAQ; Europe FAQ.

Look at the model label on the console and inspect its rear panel before buying or connecting an optical cable. PlayStation Support states that CUH-2000 series systems do not have an optical digital output. Its setup illustrations show optical ports on CUH-1000/1100, CUH-1200, and PS4 Pro CUH-7000, CUH-7100, and CUH-7200 examples; they show no optical port on CUH-2000, CUH-2100, or CUH-2200 examples. Check the actual port rather than relying only on a broad model-family name, since regional variants and model labels can be confusing. PlayStation’s PS4 setup guide.

Choose HDMI or optical
| Connection | What to check | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | The TV or receiver must support the required audio formats and inputs. | Most straightforward setup; sends video and audio over one connection. |
| DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) | The PS4 must physically have the optical port, and the receiving system must have a compatible optical input and support the desired format. | Sending audio directly to a compatible home theater system when HDMI routing through the TV is not preferred. |
Neither connection guarantees surround by itself. The PS4, the receiving equipment, and the game or other content all need to support the format and speaker arrangement you intend to use.
Set the PS4 audio output
- Open Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings.
- For an optical connection, choose Primary Output Port > DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). For HDMI, keep the HDMI output path appropriate to the connected TV or receiver.
- Review Audio Format (Priority). PlayStation lists Linear PCM as the default. Select a format only after confirming that the connected equipment supports it; PlayStation warns that unsupported output settings can damage speakers.
- Play audio content and confirm that the receiver or TV indicates the expected input and format. If it does not, recheck the physical connection, the selected output port, and the capabilities of every device in the chain.
See PlayStation’s audio output instructions for the available settings.

Route sound to headphones
Go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones and select whether to send all audio or chat audio. The documented default is Chat Audio. This setting controls what is routed to the headphones; it does not establish that an arbitrary headset produces discrete surround sound.
When HDMI audio or video does not work
PlayStation notes that HDMI output can fail when a connected device is not HDCP-compatible. HDCP can be disabled for gameplay only. Blu-ray and DVD playback, as well as DRM-protected streaming, requires HDCP to remain enabled. If you change the HDCP setting to troubleshoot gameplay, restore it for those forms of playback. PlayStation Support explains the audio and HDCP settings.
