Does the PS4 Support 120Hz Monitors? What to Expect

You can connect a PS4 to a compatible 120 Hz monitor, but the console does not thereby output at 120 Hz. Here’s what standard PS4 and PS4 Pro specifications say.

Yes, you can connect a PS4 to a 120 Hz monitor if the monitor accepts the console’s HDMI signal. But the monitor’s 120 Hz rating does not make the PS4 output at 120 Hz. PlayStation’s published PS4 specifications do not establish 120 Hz output, and PS4 Pro’s documented 4K output is up to 60 frames per second under specified conditions.

Can you use a 120 Hz monitor with a PS4?

Yes. Connect the console’s HDMI OUT port to an HDMI input on the monitor, as described in PlayStation’s PS4 setup instructions. Whether a particular monitor works depends on whether it accepts the signal coming from the console. Check the monitor manual for supported HDMI resolutions and timings; a 120 Hz label alone does not confirm compatibility with every PS4 output mode.

Will the PS4 run at 120 Hz on that monitor?

No published PS4 output specification in the cited PlayStation documentation establishes 120 Hz gameplay. A monitor’s refresh-rate capability and the console’s video output mode are separate: the display may be capable of refreshing at 120 Hz, but that does not mean a connected PS4 sends it a 120 Hz signal.

PlayStation’s 2013 FAQ lists standard PS4 HDMI video standards as 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. It also says PS4 hardware can support game frame rates up to 60 frames per second, which is a general capability—not a promise that every game runs at 60 fps. See the PS4: The Ultimate FAQ.

What changes with PS4 Pro?

PS4 Pro adds 2160p (4K) output, but this is not a 120 Hz mode. PlayStation’s 2016 FAQ describes 4K output at up to 60 frames per second when using a supported 4K display and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. The stated conditions are in the PS4 Pro: The Ultimate FAQ.

For that 4K setup, PlayStation’s PS4 Pro 4K and HDR guide specifies a display supporting 4K/60 Hz and advises checking that the correct 4K-capable input is selected and that connected devices in the HDMI chain support the required mode.

What should you check before connecting one?

  • HDMI compatibility: Confirm in the monitor manual that its HDMI input accepts the PS4’s output resolution and timing. Not every 120 Hz monitor necessarily accepts every PS4 signal.
  • Resolution: For a standard PS4, consider whether the monitor supports the output resolutions PlayStation lists through 1080p. For PS4 Pro 4K, check for a compatible 4K/60 Hz display and the required HDMI chain.
  • Input selection: Connect the PS4’s HDMI OUT to the monitor’s HDMI input and select that input on the display.
  • Your other devices: A 120 Hz monitor may be useful with another connected device that can use its higher refresh rate, but that benefit should not be assumed for PS4.

Is a 120 Hz monitor worth buying for PS4?

Do not buy one expecting the PS4 to use its full 120 Hz refresh rate. Choose a monitor for HDMI compatibility and the resolution you want from your PS4 or PS4 Pro; a 120 Hz panel may still make sense if you also plan to use it with other devices. If PS4 is the only use, a compatible 1080p monitor with HDMI input is a straightforward option, not a 120 Hz performance upgrade.
