No hands-free voice-search feature is established in Google’s current documentation for its Windows desktop app. The documented workflow opens the app with a keyboard shortcut and uses typed queries. The app does offer web, local-file and Google Drive search, AI Mode, Lens, and screen sharing—but Google’s mobile voice-search instructions do not confirm voice input on desktop.
What Google’s desktop app actually supports
The Google app for desktop is a Windows search app. Google introduced it as a Search Labs experiment in September 2025, then announced global availability for Windows users in English on April 14, 2026. Google’s current help page specifies Windows 10 or later and lists supported languages. These statements establish Windows availability, not a macOS or Linux release. Launch and search
Press Alt + Space to open the app, or launch it from the desktop or notification tray. Google says the keyboard shortcut can be changed in the app’s settings. To search, enter a query in the search box; AI Mode follow-up questions are also typed.
Search sources and tools
- Web and AI Mode: Search the web and, when eligible, use AI Mode for responses with follow-up questions and helpful web links.
- Local files and installed apps: Search content indexed on the Windows device.
- Google Drive: Search Drive content after signing in to a Google Account.
- Google Lens: Select an area of the screen to search it, translate text, or copy text or image content.
- Screen sharing: Share a particular window or the full screen, then type a question about what is displayed.
These functions and the documented typed-query workflow are described in Google’s desktop help instructions.

Why mobile voice search does not prove desktop voice support
Google’s Voice Search instructions describe opening the Google app on an Android phone or tablet and tapping the microphone. The page says the “Hey Google” trigger works only for Google Assistant. It does not provide a hands-free voice-input workflow for the Windows desktop app.
Google separately announced Search Live with voice input for the Google app on Android and iOS on June 18, 2025. That announcement described availability in the US for users enrolled in the AI Mode experiment in Labs at the time; it is not evidence of desktop voice support. This is a finding about what Google’s official documentation establishes, not proof that no limited, account-specific, or undocumented desktop voice input exists. Google’s current desktop instructions simply do not document hands-free voice search.
Availability and eligibility are not the same
Google’s current help page says the app is for users aged 13 or older on a Windows 10-or-later desktop and lists supported languages, including English (US and UK), French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese variants. Google’s April 2026 announcement described the app as globally available to Windows users in English; the current help page gives broader language details.

AI Mode access is a separate matter: Google warns that it is not yet supported for every account, country, or language. Check Google’s current desktop help page for eligibility and language details. Google also notes that Search service settings are being updated and may not match every user’s experience, so interface details can change.

Google says the app builds a local index of files and apps on the device and does not send that index to Google’s servers. For Lens queries, Google says only the selected screen area is sent to Google for processing. Those statements apply to the local index and Lens selection specifically; they should not be read as a general description of how every app feature or AI Mode handles data.
