Does the Fire TV Stick 4K need Wi-Fi?
It needs internet access to stream online, but it does not necessarily need Wi-Fi. Amazon’s setup instructions use a Wi-Fi network as the normal connection route, while its device specifications show that Ethernet support varies by model. Some Fire TV Stick 4K models may use a wired connection with a compatible Ethernet adapter. Check the specifications for your exact generation and adapter before buying one.

Wi-Fi or Ethernet?
- Wi-Fi: The usual setup option. Its usefulness depends on the signal strength and stability where the Fire TV Stick is installed.
- Ethernet: A possible wired alternative on supported models with a compatible adapter. It can help test whether unreliable Wi-Fi is affecting playback, but it is not universally available or required.

What internet speed does it require for 4K?
Amazon Customer Service says a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps is needed for 4K Ultra HD playback on a Fire TV device. Amazon also notes that some video apps, including Netflix, recommend at least 20 Mbps. The 20 Mbps figure is an example of an app’s recommendation, not Amazon’s universal minimum. These are speed guidelines, not guarantees against buffering. The speed available to the Fire TV can differ from the headline speed of a broadband plan, and a weak or unstable connection can interfere with playback. Amazon’s cited guidance does not set a universal extra-speed allowance for other people or devices using the same household connection.

What else is needed for 4K playback?
Internet speed is only one part of the 4K setup. Amazon’s requirements also call for an Ultra HD TV and HDCP 2.2 support through the HDMI connection and connected equipment. The streaming service and your subscription plan must offer 4K, and the TV’s resolution settings must be appropriate.
- Confirm that the service and plan you are using support 4K Ultra HD.
- Check that the TV is an Ultra HD model and that its resolution is set appropriately.
- Verify HDCP 2.2 support for the HDMI port and for any receiver or soundbar in the video path; check that connected equipment supports 4K pass-through.

How to troubleshoot unreliable 4K playback
- Check the content and equipment. Confirm that the service and subscription support 4K, the TV is Ultra HD, and the HDMI connection and any receiver or soundbar support HDCP 2.2 and 4K pass-through.
- Check the connection at the Fire TV. Amazon recommends checking available bandwidth and connection strength. A broadband plan’s advertised speed does not by itself show how strong the connection is at the device.
- Improve or change the link. Move the Fire TV closer to the router, or try Ethernet with a compatible adapter if your exact model supports it.
- Run Network Status. On the Fire TV, open Settings → Network and select the connected network to view Network Status. The tool checks the Fire TV-to-router link and the router-to-internet connection, and can offer recommendations for problems it detects. Some compatible devices also provide a download speed test and more detailed network information.
- Use Audio and Video Diagnostics if available. Amazon recommends this tool for diagnosing video or equipment issues on devices where it is offered.
