No. The DJI Neo can take off from your palm, follow a person for intelligent filming and land back on your hand without a conventional remote controller or another auxiliary device. You can also control it from a phone through DJI Fly. A standard remote is optional for pilots who want physical control sticks, while motion and FPV flying are separate setups that require compatible controllers and goggles.
Which DJI Neo control options require a controller?
Neo has five practical control paths. Two are designed to work without a conventional remote: palm control and the DJI Fly smartphone app. A standard remote gives you the familiar two-stick flying experience. Motion control and FPV control are immersive alternatives, but each adds specific hardware requirements.

| Control method | Is a conventional remote required? | What it is best for | Important requirements or limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palm control | No | Quick, close-range intelligent filming | Use Neo’s top mode button; keep visual line of sight and follow DJI’s safety instructions |
| DJI Fly app | No | Phone-based framing, settings and limited manual positioning | Wi-Fi connection; virtual joysticks; DJI states a maximum height of 30 m and distance of 50 m for app control |
| Standard remote | Yes, for this control path | Traditional stick flying and more direct manual control | DJI lists RC-N3, RC-N2 and RC 2; verify the exact kit and market compatibility |
| Motion control with goggles | Yes | Immersive, gesture-oriented flying | DJI RC Motion 3 plus DJI Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 |
| FPV remote with goggles | Yes | Immersive flying with an FPV-style controller | DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 plus compatible goggles |
Therefore, buying a separate remote is not a prerequisite for owning or using Neo. The right choice depends on whether you want automatic filming, phone control, conventional sticks or an immersive goggles-based setup.
Palm control: the completely controller-free option
How it works
Palm control uses the button on top of Neo rather than a phone or transmitter. Press the mode button to select one of the supported intelligent shooting modes, then initiate palm takeoff. Neo uses its visual algorithms to recognize and lock onto a human subject, records the selected shot and can land on your palm.

DJI describes this capability as taking off and landing from your hand and performing intelligent filming “without the need for a remote controller or any auxiliary device.” The official FAQ notes that subject confirmation currently supports people, so do not assume that every object, pet or scene can be selected in the same way.
What palm control can and cannot do
- It is intended for straightforward, close-range filming rather than conventional piloting.
- You choose supported intelligent modes from Neo itself; no phone pairing is needed for the basic palm workflow.
- Neo follows the recognized human subject using its visual system instead of receiving continuous stick commands.
- It does not give you the same route planning, camera adjustment and manual positioning control as a standard remote.
- You remain responsible for the flight. Maintain visual line of sight, leave a clear area for takeoff and landing, and follow DJI’s safety instructions.
Typical palm-control sequence
- Place yourself in a clear area where Neo can be seen throughout the flight.
- Use the top mode button to select a supported intelligent shooting mode.
- Position your palm as required for takeoff and start the palm launch.
- Let Neo acquire the person it is meant to film, checking that the subject is correctly recognized before moving.
- Keep the aircraft in sight and avoid obstacles, people and restricted areas while the automated shot runs.
- Use the palm landing procedure when the shot is complete, then wait until the propellers have stopped before handling the aircraft.
Palm control is the simplest answer for a user who wants to record a walking, cycling or other personal clip with minimal setup. It is not a substitute for learning stick control when you need precise navigation or deliberate positioning.
DJI Fly app control: a phone instead of a transmitter
What the app provides
DJI Fly connects to Neo over Wi-Fi. The app can show a live camera view, let you adjust available shooting parameters, change supported shooting modes, transfer footage and provide virtual joysticks for manual control. This makes a phone useful when you want to frame a shot, alter settings or make a small position adjustment without carrying a separate controller.

The virtual joysticks are intentionally more limited than physical sticks. DJI says they are for fine-tuning Neo’s position during shooting or commanding it to return, and that they cannot provide the same control experience as a traditional remote controller. A touchscreen also gives less tactile feedback than a dedicated transmitter, particularly when you are concentrating on the aircraft and the scene at the same time.

DJI’s stated app-control limits
DJI specifies a maximum app-control height of 30 m and a maximum distance of 50 m. These are the stated limits for the app-control mode, not a guarantee that a Wi-Fi link will remain reliable at those distances in every building, neighborhood or radio environment. Walls, interference, orientation and local conditions can reduce practical range.
How to start an app-controlled flight
- Install or update DJI Fly on the phone you intend to use.
- Power on Neo and keep the phone close while establishing the connection.
- Use DJI Fly’s connection prompt to join Neo over Wi-Fi and wait for the live camera view.
- Check the displayed aircraft and connection status before launching.
- Select the supported shooting mode you need, or choose the app’s manual-control option if you need virtual joysticks.
- Keep the flight within DJI’s 30 m height and 50 m distance app limits, while maintaining visual line of sight.
- Use the on-screen controls only for the level of positioning they can provide; land and reconnect rather than continuing if the link becomes unstable.
- After landing, use DJI Fly to review or transfer footage if required.
App control is a good middle ground: it offers more framing and settings access than palm control, but it is still less direct than a standard remote. It also adds a phone, Wi-Fi pairing and a touchscreen to the preflight process.
Standard remote controllers: optional, but the conventional choice
Compatible models listed by DJI
DJI lists the DJI RC-N3, DJI RC-N2 and DJI RC 2 as standard controller options for Neo. These controllers use physical sticks, so they are the appropriate route if you want traditional manual flying rather than automated subject shots or on-screen joysticks.
| If you want to… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Launch an automatic personal shot with the least equipment | Palm control | No phone or conventional remote is needed for the basic workflow |
| See a live view, change settings and make small manual adjustments from a phone | DJI Fly | Provides camera controls and virtual joysticks over Wi-Fi |
| Fly with familiar physical sticks | RC-N3, RC-N2 or RC 2 | Designed for conventional control rather than touchscreen input |
| Use an immersive head-mounted flying setup | RC Motion 3 with Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 | Motion-based control paired with compatible goggles |
| Use an FPV-style controller and goggles | DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 with compatible goggles | Separate FPV control route with additional equipment |
Check the package before buying anything
Neo packages do not all necessarily contain the same accessories. Before purchasing a controller separately, inspect the exact bundle name, included items and compatibility information for your country or region. Firmware requirements, market availability and supported combinations can change. If a bundle already includes a compatible controller, buying another one adds cost without changing what Neo can do.

A standard remote does not make palm control mandatory or replace it; it simply gives you another control method. You can choose a remote because you prefer physical sticks, not because Neo cannot operate without one.
Motion control and FPV control: separate equipment paths
Motion control with goggles
DJI lists DJI RC Motion 3 with DJI Goggles 3 or Goggles N3 as a supported combination. The motion controller-and-goggles route is intended for an immersive flying experience. It is not needed for palm filming or ordinary DJI Fly use, and it requires both the controller and a compatible pair of goggles.
When evaluating this route, count the complete equipment chain: Neo, the motion controller and the specified goggles. Do not assume that any DJI goggles or any motion controller will work together; use DJI’s current compatibility information for the exact firmware and hardware combination.
FPV Remote Controller 3 with goggles
DJI also lists DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 with compatible goggles. This is a different immersive control path from the motion controller. It likewise adds separate equipment requirements and is aimed at users who specifically want FPV-style operation rather than the quick automatic shots for which Neo can be used controller-free.

Choose palm control when simplicity matters most
Use palm control when you want to start a supported intelligent shot quickly, carry minimal equipment and remain close to the aircraft. It is the least complicated path, but it gives up deliberate stick-based flight control.
Choose DJI Fly when you need phone-based framing
Choose the app when a live view, shooting parameters, mode selection and footage transfer matter more than tactile control. Stay within the 30 m and 50 m app limits and expect virtual joysticks to be suitable for fine adjustments rather than an equivalent replacement for a transmitter.

Choose motion or FPV equipment only for immersive flying
Select the goggles-based options when the immersive experience itself justifies the additional hardware. Confirm the exact controller-and-goggles pairing before purchase; neither option is required for Neo’s basic controller-free functions.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying a remote automatically: Do not assume the aircraft is unusable without one. Start with palm control or DJI Fly if those meet your needs.
- Expecting app joysticks to feel like sticks: DJI explicitly describes the virtual controls as more limited. Use them for fine positioning and return functions, not as a promise of identical manual control.
- Ignoring app limits: Keep app flights within the stated 30 m height and 50 m distance maximums, and treat radio conditions as variable.
- Assuming every subject is supported for intelligent tracking: DJI’s FAQ qualifies current subject confirmation as supporting people.
- Confusing controller categories: A standard remote, a motion controller and an FPV remote are different control paths with different equipment requirements.
- Skipping bundle and compatibility checks: Verify what your exact package contains and whether the controller or goggles combination is supported in your market and with your firmware.
- Flying without visual awareness: Automated filming does not remove the need to keep Neo in sight, maintain a clear operating area and follow applicable safety instructions.
Bottom line for prospective Neo owners
DJI Neo does not need a conventional remote controller. Palm control handles supported intelligent filming without a phone or auxiliary device, and DJI Fly adds live view, settings, footage transfer and limited virtual-stick control over Wi-Fi. DJI’s app limits are 30 m in height and 50 m in distance.
Buy or use a compatible standard remote—DJI RC-N3, RC-N2 or RC 2—when physical sticks are your preferred control method. Choose DJI RC Motion 3 with Goggles 3 or Goggles N3, or DJI FPV Remote Controller 3 with compatible goggles, only when you specifically want an immersive setup. Check the exact bundle and current compatibility details before adding hardware.
