The Fire TV Cube (3rd Generation, 2022) needs a free HDMI port, internet access, and an Amazon account for basic streaming. Soundbar audio and voice control depend on the TV’s ports and settings and the specific audio equipment; smart-home control requires Alexa-compatible devices and may require a separate hub.
What you need for basic TV setup
Amazon’s Fire TV Cube setup guide calls for a TV with an available HDMI port, a high-speed HDMI cable, internet access, and an Amazon account. Amazon says the HDMI cable is required but not included. Connect the Cube to the TV, select that HDMI input, and follow the on-screen setup instructions.

The port details depend on the Cube generation. Amazon’s Fire TV device specifications identify the 3rd-generation Cube, released in 2022, as having HDMI 2.1 input and HDMI 2.1 output with ARC. Treat those as specifications for that model, not as a promise that every TV or every video and audio feature will work. Check the TV’s available ports and the features you want against the exact TV and Cube model.
How to connect a soundbar or AV receiver
For a typical soundbar setup, Amazon’s Fire TV soundbar setup instructions show the Cube connected to a non-ARC HDMI port on the TV, with the soundbar connected to the TV’s ARC or eARC port. Select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output. The exact ports and settings vary by TV and soundbar, so follow both device manuals.

- Amazon says certain functions of connected soundbars and AV receivers can be controlled through Fire TV settings; it does not promise control of every model or every function. See its Fire TV Cube Alexa guide for the stated equipment-control limitations.
Soundbar audio and Alexa Home Theater are different setups
Alexa Home Theater routes audio through compatible Echo devices rather than through a soundbar or AV receiver left in the sound path. Amazon’s ARC Home Theater setup instructions require a TV with HDMI ARC and a compatible Fire TV and Echo combination. For this arrangement, Amazon instructs users to disconnect the soundbar or receiver. Check the compatibility information for ARC Home Theater for the specific devices; having a Fire TV Cube alone does not establish that an Echo pairing is supported.
What to check for smart-home control
The Cube can use Alexa to control smart-home equipment that is compatible with Alexa and configured for it. Amazon’s smart-home connection guide directs users to add devices through the Alexa app. Amazon notes that most Wi-Fi smart-home devices work only on 2.4 GHz networks, so check the device’s network requirements if setup fails.

Do not assume the Cube replaces a smart-home hub. Amazon lists third-party smart-home devices without a hub as unavailable on Fire TV Cube. Requirements vary by device and connection method, including Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Matter products; confirm whether the manufacturer requires a separate hub and whether its Alexa setup method is supported.

Choose the audio path that matches your equipment
| Setup | What to verify | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| TV speakers | A free TV HDMI port and the Cube’s basic streaming requirements. | The simplest path; picture and sound features still depend on the TV and Cube models. |
| Soundbar or AV receiver through the TV | TV and audio-device ports, ARC/eARC support for the intended connection, audio-output settings, and equipment-control configuration. | Voice control covers certain functions on configured equipment, not necessarily every model or function. |
| Alexa Home Theater with Echo devices | A compatible Fire TV/Echo combination and a TV with HDMI ARC. | This is a separate Echo-based audio setup; Amazon instructs users to disconnect the soundbar or receiver for it. |
Setup checklist
- Check that the TV has a free HDMI input. Have a high-speed HDMI cable, Wi-Fi details, and an Amazon account ready; Amazon says the cable is not included.
- Connect the Cube’s HDMI output to the TV and switch the TV to that input.
- Complete internet and account setup on screen. Configure equipment control during setup or in Fire TV settings for supported equipment.
- For a soundbar, connect it to the TV’s ARC/eARC port as directed by both device manuals, then check the TV’s audio-output and ARC/CEC settings.
- Add Alexa-compatible smart-home devices through the Alexa app and check whether each device needs its own hub.
- Place the Cube where it can hear voice commands. Amazon recommends about one foot of distance from speakers and says not to put the Cube in a closed cabinet. An IR extender, sold separately, can help control components inside a cabinet.
