Changing web hosts does not inherently lower your Google rankings when your domain and user-visible URLs stay the same. Google treats that situation as a hosting-infrastructure change, not as a new website. A short-lived change in Googlebot crawling is normal after the DNS cutover. Rankings and traffic become vulnerable when the new server is unreachable, DNS is misconfigured, pages or metadata are missing, robots or noindex rules block crawling, or the server cannot handle Googlebot and user traffic.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
If the move also changes your domain, subdomain, protocol, or URL paths, it is a different project: a URL-changing site move. That requires redirects, sitemap updates and closer indexing checks, and Google expects temporary ranking fluctuations while it recrawls the new addresses.

What a host-only move changes
A host-only migration moves your files, database and server infrastructure while preserving the domain and the URLs visitors see. For example, https://example.com/guide should remain the same address before and after the DNS change. Google does not present the hosting company, physical server or server IP as a penalty trigger by itself.
The practical SEO question is whether Googlebot can fetch the same resource and receive the same useful response. A successful move preserves the page body, status code, canonical URL, indexability directives, images, downloads, structured content and internal links. A failed move can look like an SEO problem even though the cause is operational: DNS still points to the old machine, the new firewall blocks Googlebot, pages return 5xx errors, or a staging rule remains active.

What Googlebot normally does after the DNS cutover
Google Search Central says it is normal to see a temporary drop in Googlebot’s crawl rate immediately after a hosting-infrastructure launch, followed by a steady increase over the next few days. The rate may eventually be higher than before the move. That pattern reflects Google adapting to the new infrastructure; it is not, by itself, evidence of a ranking penalty.
A crawl-rate dip is different from persistent failures. If URL Inspection cannot retrieve important pages, logs show repeated timeouts, or Search Console reports growing server errors, treat the problem as an outage or access defect. Rankings can fall when Google cannot refresh content or users encounter unavailable pages.

Migration plan for keeping the same URLs
Before the move
- Build and test a complete copy. Transfer application files, databases, media, downloadable files, redirects, scheduled jobs and configuration. Test representative articles, images, forms, logins, site search, checkout or other transactions, and any API-dependent features.
- Use a protected test environment. Restrict access with authentication or an IP allow-list. If the copy has a temporary hostname, add a
noindexdirective so search engines do not index the test version. Remove that directive before launch. - Test Googlebot access. In Google Search Console, use URL Inspection on important URLs and confirm that the new infrastructure can be reached. Check that firewall, bot-management and denial-of-service controls do not challenge or block legitimate Googlebot requests.
- Prepare DNS. Lower the DNS TTL to a conservative value such as a few hours, at least a week before the planned cutover when practical. A shorter TTL can let resolvers recognize the new destination sooner, although previously cached records may still persist until their existing TTL expires.
- Preserve verification and templates. Carry Search Console verification files, verification meta tags and any shared templates into the new copy. Losing them can make monitoring harder during the most important part of the migration.
- Audit launch blockers. Find temporary
robots.txtdisallows, page-levelnoindexdirectives, maintenance responses and development-only authentication. Schedule their removal as part of the release checklist.
At cutover
- Update the domain’s DNS records to the new server or load-balancer addresses.
- Keep the old host serving the site while DNS records propagate and traffic shifts. Do not take it offline immediately after changing the records.
- Request the same high-value URLs through several networks and confirm that each returns the expected page, status code, canonical tag, robots directives, images, downloads and structured content.
- Check both the preferred hostname and any legitimate aliases, such as HTTP-to-HTTPS and www-to-non-www variants, so the canonicalization behavior has not changed accidentally.
After cutover
- Compare old- and new-server logs as requests move. Look for Googlebot responses, timeouts, DNS errors, 4xx responses and 5xx responses.
- Check DNS propagation from multiple networks and locations. A local successful lookup does not prove every resolver has updated.
- Monitor Search Console crawl statistics, indexing reports and URL Inspection alongside analytics and application/server-error dashboards.
- Expect the temporary Googlebot crawl-rate reduction and subsequent increase described by Google. Persistent access failures, rising server errors or widespread deindexing require immediate investigation.
- Retire the old host only after its traffic has reached zero and the new host is reliably serving both users and Googlebot. Keep a restorable copy and a tested rollback procedure until that point.
Technical checks that protect visibility
DNS and certificate correctness
Confirm that the apex domain and every required subdomain resolve to the new infrastructure. Verify the TLS certificate covers all served hostnames and that the complete certificate chain works. A DNS record that points to the wrong address, or an HTTPS error that browsers and crawlers cannot bypass, makes otherwise perfect content unavailable.
HTTP responses and redirects
Existing pages should continue to return the status codes they returned before the move. Do not convert valid pages into 404 or 410 responses during a file-transfer or routing change. If the application uses redirects, ensure they resolve in one predictable chain and do not send every path to the home page. A host-only move usually needs no new URL redirects; the goal is to serve the same addresses directly.
Content and metadata parity
Compare a sample from every important template and content type. Check visible text, title and meta description fields, canonical tags, hreflang where used, headings, images and alt text, downloadable assets, pagination, structured data and internal links. A deployment that copies HTML but omits images, scripts that render content, or database records can create a substantial indexing difference without changing any URL.

Robots and indexability
Retrieve robots.txt from the live hostname and review every disallow rule. A rule intended only for staging can block an entire directory after launch. Inspect page-level noindex directives and HTTP X-Robots-Tag headers as well. Remove temporary restrictions before announcing the site as live, then verify representative pages in URL Inspection.
Capacity and protection systems
Google says a migrated site may be crawled more heavily than usual, so the new server needs enough capacity. Size CPU, memory, database connections, bandwidth, cache and rate limits for the launch surge as well as normal users. Review web-application firewalls, bot challenges, geographic blocks and denial-of-service protections; an aggressive rule can deny Googlebot or make DNS and HTTP requests time out even while the site appears healthy to an administrator.
When the move also changes URLs
Changing a domain, subdomain, protocol or path is not merely a host change. It is a URL-changing site move, even if the content and server remain identical. Google must discover the new addresses, follow the migration signals and recrawl them.

| Migration type | Main work | Expected search behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Same domain and same paths | DNS, availability, parity, crawl access and monitoring | Temporary crawl-rate fluctuation is normal; no host-specific penalty is expected |
| New domain, subdomain, protocol or paths | URL map, permanent redirects, updated sitemaps, verified Search Console properties and monitoring | Temporary ranking fluctuations while Google recrawls and reindexes |
Steps for a URL-changing move
- Create a one-to-one map from every important old URL to its corresponding new URL. Include files, image URLs and alternate language or mobile URLs where they exist.
- Implement server-side 301 or other permanent redirects from old addresses to their direct new equivalents. Google states that 301 and other permanent redirects do not cause a loss in PageRank, but incorrect targets or redirect chains can still damage usability and discovery.
- Update canonical tags, internal links, structured data and XML sitemaps so they reference the new URLs. Remove old URLs from the submitted sitemap after the new versions are available.
- Verify both old and new properties in Search Console. Monitor indexing, crawl errors and URL Inspection for representative old and new addresses.
- Keep redirects and the old site available while Google processes the move. Google says a medium-sized site can take a few weeks or more for most pages to appear at their new URLs; larger sites can take longer.
During this period, a ranking fluctuation does not necessarily mean the migration failed. Widespread redirect errors, blocked crawling, missing content, insufficient capacity or a sitemap that still lists only old URLs are actionable problems.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should you use Search Console’s Change of Address?
No, not for a pure hosting-provider change where the user-visible domain and URLs remain unchanged. Google distinguishes a hosting or CDN change from a move between domains or subdomains.
Use Change of Address when moving from one domain or subdomain to another and when the old and new properties have been verified. Google says submitted Change of Address actions continue for 180 days. The tool does not replace URL-level redirects, updated sitemaps or post-move monitoring.

Troubleshooting ranking or traffic drops
Everything dropped immediately after DNS changed
Check resolution from multiple networks, the TLS certificate, load-balancer health and whether the old host is still serving during propagation. Review server logs for timeouts and 5xx responses. If the new address is unreachable, restore service on the old host or roll DNS back while correcting the new environment.
Only some directories or templates disappeared
Compare old and new responses for affected URLs. Look for missing database content, deployment exclusions, changed routing, incorrect canonical tags, directory-level robots rules and noindex headers. A selective decline usually points to parity or configuration differences rather than the host itself.

Use URL Inspection and crawl reports to determine whether Googlebot receives errors, is blocked by a firewall, or is being throttled. Examine response times and capacity under concurrent requests. A brief crawl-rate dip is expected; continuing access failures are not.
The URL-changing move has unstable rankings
Test redirects one by one, confirm every important old URL has a relevant new destination, submit a current sitemap and remove accidental noindex or robots blocks. Keep the old URLs redirecting while recrawling continues instead of deleting them prematurely.
Quick Recap
A practical go/no-go checklist
- The new copy has been tested for content, media, forms, logins, search and transactions.
- Temporary staging restrictions are removed only from the production hostname.
- Googlebot can fetch representative URLs through URL Inspection.
- DNS records, TLS certificates and canonical hostname redirects are correct.
- Robots rules, noindex directives and X-Robots-Tag headers permit indexing of production content.
- Old and new responses have matching status codes and important metadata.
- Firewall and bot-protection rules allow Googlebot and normal DNS/HTTP traffic.
- Capacity, logging, analytics and Search Console monitoring are ready.
- The old host remains available for propagation and rollback.
- If URLs change, the redirect map, updated sitemap and verified Search Console properties are complete.
