Does Super Chat Revenue Count Toward YouTube Livestream Watch Hours?

Super Chat is fan-funding revenue, not watch time. A public livestream retained as a VOD may contribute eligible viewing hours, but the payment adds none.

No. Super Chat revenue does not count toward YouTube livestream watch hours or add qualified hours toward YouTube Partner Program (YPP) thresholds. Super Chat is money a viewer pays to highlight a live-chat message; eligible viewing time is measured separately.

Super Chat money and watch hours measure different things

Item What it measures What it affects
Super Chat A fan payment to highlight a message during a live chat Fan-funding revenue, subject to feature eligibility and applicable terms
Qualified watch hours Eligible time viewers spend watching public long-form video YPP eligibility thresholds based on watch hours
Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium Separate viewing-related monetization Revenue under their own monetization rules, not extra watch hours from a Super Chat

A viewer’s payment does not extend the stream, multiply its viewing time, or turn dollars into hours. If a viewer sends a Super Chat while watching, their eligible viewing time may contribute as viewing time—but the payment itself adds none.

When livestream viewing can count toward YPP hours

YouTube’s eligibility guidance counts qualified watch hours from public long-form videos. A livestream may contribute eligible hours if it is public and retained as a video on demand (VOD). YouTube excludes livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. See YouTube’s YPP overview and eligibility guidance.

  • Public stream retained as a VOD: its eligible viewing may count toward qualified hours.
  • Unlisted or deleted stream: its hours do not count toward the stated threshold.
  • Stream not converted to VOD: its hours are excluded.

Do not assume every hour a stream is live automatically qualifies. The archived video’s status and YouTube’s eligibility rules matter.

Current YPP watch-hour thresholds

YouTube Help’s current guidance, checked in 2026, lists these routes. The Help page does not display an original publication year, so these figures should be checked in YouTube’s current guidance when applying.

YPP eligibility route Subscriber and activity requirements Long-form watch-hour route Shorts alternative
Entry tier 500 subscribers and 3 public uploads in the last 90 days 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 365 days 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days
Higher ad eligibility tier 1,000 subscribers 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 365 days 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days

These are alternative eligibility routes as stated in YouTube Help, not guarantees of acceptance or monetization. A channel must also meet applicable YouTube policies and pass review. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio for your channel’s status and the current requirements.

Super Chat eligibility and revenue are separate

Reaching a watch-hour threshold does not by itself enable Super Chat. YouTube treats Super Chat as a YPP fan-funding feature with separate feature requirements, Commerce Product Module terms, and country or region availability. Check the YouTube Help guide to monetization features and the Earn area in Studio for account-specific availability.

YouTube Help’s current guidance, checked in 2026, states a 70% share of net revenues from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks for partners who accept the Commerce Product Module. Separately, it states a 55% share of net revenues from Watch Page ads under the Watch Page Monetization Module. These are module revenue-share terms, not a promise about what a particular stream or payment will earn; YouTube says partner earnings are not guaranteed. See YouTube’s earnings overview.

How to check your channel’s progress

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Earn to see your channel’s YPP progress and available eligibility options.
  2. Check your livestream’s visibility and whether YouTube has retained it as a VOD. Public status and archive treatment affect whether its viewing can qualify.
  3. Use your channel’s analytics and earnings views for account-specific viewing and revenue data. Keep Super Chat earnings separate from watch-hour progress.
  4. Review the current feature requirements and country availability in YouTube Help before relying on Super Chat being available to your channel.

Keep a YouTube stream running without treating it as a shortcut

Continuous streaming does not make Super Chat count as watch time, and hours are not guaranteed to qualify just because a channel stays live. If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not create watch hours or bypass YouTube’s eligibility and content policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
