Subway air can contain elevated levels of fine particulate matter, and breathing PM2.5 is linked to respiratory and cardiovascular harm. But pollution differs widely by system and location, and measurements of subway air do not prove that a particular ride caused illness. The clearest evidence supports reducing and monitoring pollution across transit systems—not treating every subway or every trip as equally hazardous.
Is subway air pollution bad for your health?
It can contribute to exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a general air-pollution hazard associated with harm to the lungs and cardiovascular system. Health Canada defines PM2.5 as particles with aerodynamic diameters below 2.5 micrometres; inhaled particles can reach deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Its guidance lists asthma, lung cancer, coronary disease, heart attacks, stroke and reduced life expectancy among health effects associated with PM2.5. These are general PM2.5 findings, not a tally of illnesses caused by subway travel.

The distinction matters: a study measuring particles on a platform establishes an exposure, not that an individual passenger will become ill or that a specific trip caused a health condition. The long-term health consequences specifically attributable to subway travel are less settled than the broader evidence on PM2.5. The UK Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants published a statement focused on particulate pollution and the travelling public on the London Underground, but that scope alone does not establish a risk estimate for other systems. COMEAP’s 2019 statement is about that network and travelling public.

There is no single answer for all subway systems, stations, or trips. Health Canada reports markedly different platform PM2.5 estimates in three Canadian cities, and studies find that conditions vary with station design, ventilation, train operations, season, passenger activity and outdoor pollution. A measurement from one system or period should not be treated as a universal subway level or as a personal safety threshold.

| Study or system | Reported PM2.5 finding | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver platforms; Health Canada guidance reporting the Urban Transportation Exposure Study (2022) | Estimated platform concentrations: Toronto 106 µg/m³, Montreal 36 µg/m³ and Vancouver 40 µg/m³. | These are estimates for the named systems, not a global subway average. Health Canada also estimated that subway commuting accounted for 11% to 21% of daily PM2.5 exposure in those systems. |
| 115 stations in a study reported by Health Canada (2022) | PM2.5 concentrations ranged from 10 to 125 µg/m³. | This is a range observed in that study, not a universal range for subway stations. |
| Barcelona subway, operating-hour platform measurements during the study’s warmer and colder periods (2015) | Average PM2.5 was 20–51 µg/m³ during the warmer period and 41–91 µg/m³ during the colder period. | The measurements show that levels can differ by season and station; they do not predict levels in another network. |

What is the dust in subway stations?
Much of the particulate matter discussed in subway-air studies is generated inside the transit system. Repeated friction and mechanical wear involving rails, wheels, brakes and electrical components can produce particles; outdoor air can also contribute. Health Canada identifies subway PM as a mix that can include iron-rich particles, which is relevant to some proposed removal methods.
In the Barcelona study, most PM in underground stations came from within the system, including abrasion and wear of rails, wheels and braking pads. Newer lines with platform screen doors had lower PM2.5 in that study, but the authors noted that ventilation, train frequency and design could also explain the difference. It would be too strong to attribute the measured difference to screen doors alone.

Can subway air pollution cause asthma or heart disease?
PM2.5 exposure is associated with respiratory and cardiovascular effects, and Health Canada includes asthma and coronary disease among the health outcomes linked to PM2.5. That supports concern about exposure as a public-health issue; it does not show that a subway commute caused a particular person’s asthma or heart disease. The health effects brief published by the World Health Organization in June 2026 addresses air pollution overall, not subway exposure specifically, and identifies children, pregnant people, older people and people with chronic disease among groups at greater risk from air pollution overall. WHO’s technical brief should not be read as a study of subway passengers.
Why can pollution differ between a platform and a train?
Exposure depends on where and when a person spends time. In a Stockholm platform study, train frequency, train type, passenger flow, outdoor background pollution and maintenance were associated with platform particulate levels. The researchers’ model estimated that ventilation could notably reduce PM, but that result is not a universal forecast for other systems.
Station geometry and ventilation also matter. A 2014 Barcelona study found substantial variation with station design and ventilation: narrow, single-track stations depended more on forced ventilation, while spacious, double-track stations were less affected by ventilation shutdown. Its PM10 15-minute averages ranged from 33 to 332 µg/m³ across the measured conditions and stations. These are local study results, not an operating recommendation or a typical range for all stations. The Barcelona ventilation and design study describes those findings.

What can transit agencies do to reduce subway pollution?
Health Canada’s guidance groups potential responses into six areas: “There are six key areas that have been identified in scientific literature as options to improve subway air quality: ventilation, filtration, air quality monitoring, reducing subway PM emissions, vacuuming and washing, and platform screen doors (PSDs).” The guidance is clear that interventions should be evaluated locally: effectiveness can differ by location and system.
Monitor air quality
Monitoring helps agencies identify where and when concentrations are high and check whether conditions change after an intervention. Without local measurements, it is harder to decide whether a measure is working as intended.
Optimize ventilation
Forced mechanical ventilation can be adjusted using schedules and measured indoor and outdoor PM. Because outdoor air can also carry pollution, ventilation decisions need to account for outside conditions rather than assuming that more outside air always means cleaner station air.

Filter air where it can reduce exposure
Health Canada notes that filtering air on trains may reduce commuter exposure more effectively than filtering platforms: passengers spend much of their subway time aboard trains, while station-wide filtration could require many units. That is a system-management option, not evidence that a consumer purifier will protect a passenger on a particular journey.
Reduce particles at the source
Reducing friction-brake use and considering more durable brake materials are approaches aimed at preventing some particles from being generated, rather than removing them after they enter the air.
Remove accumulated dust
Vacuuming and washing can address particles that have settled on surfaces and may otherwise be disturbed. Their practical effect needs to be assessed under local operating conditions.

Evaluate platform screens and particle removal
Platform screen doors may affect the movement of particles between platforms and track areas, but the Barcelona comparison does not isolate their effect from ventilation, train frequency or design. Health Canada also notes that magnetic particle removal is suited to iron-rich particles common in subway PM. Agencies need local measurements to assess whether either approach helps in a particular network.
What can passengers do?
The reviewed evidence supports system-level monitoring and controls, not a specific passenger product or personal protection routine. It does not establish consumer PM sensors as necessary or as a way to reduce exposure, and it does not substantiate portable or wearable air purifiers or respirators as effective subway-specific controls. For that reason, the evidence does not support a product recommendation for passengers.
