Spotify’s compressed streams discard some audio information to reduce data use, but that does not mean most of the song’s meaningful sound disappears. Whether you can hear a difference depends on the selected quality, the recording, your playback path and the conditions around it. Spotify Premium now also offers Lossless playback for eligible music and supported devices.
What does it mean when Spotify removes audio data?
Lossy compression reduces the amount of data needed to store or stream audio by encoding it in a smaller form. Spotify says most tracks in its catalog use Ogg/Vorbis. That is not the same as deleting parts of the original song from Spotify’s catalog: it describes how a playback stream is encoded.
The phrase “most of a song’s data” can mislead. Spotify’s published quality settings show different stream rates, but they do not establish how much perceptually important information is removed from every track. A lower data rate is not a direct measure of how much of the music a listener will notice is missing.
What Spotify audio quality options are available?
Spotify’s published figures are approximate settings or equivalents, not a guarantee that every client delivers an identical stream in every circumstance.

Spotify announced Premium Lossless on September 10, 2025, with an “up to” specification of 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Lossless availability is subject to market, catalog and device support; Spotify’s October 6, 2025 update said it had reached Premium users in more than 50 markets. Check the current Spotify Lossless announcement for rollout information.
Can you hear the difference between Very High and Lossless?
Sometimes a listener may notice a difference; it is not guaranteed. Spotify says the original recording, a lossless-compatible device, connection type and network conditions all affect playback. Its support page puts it plainly: “Lossless offers high technical fidelity, but it doesn’t always translate to a dramatically different listening experience for everyone.”
No percentage of listeners who can distinguish Very High from Lossless is established by the cited sources. The most useful answer is therefore about your own listening chain, not a universal promise that Lossless will sound better—or that nobody can hear it.

Why the source recording matters
A lossless stream preserves the audio data in the delivered lossless file, but it cannot make a recording or master better than its source. Differences in the recording or master can matter more to what you hear than the format label alone.

Spotify says its Lossless signal is compressed before Bluetooth transmission in the documented setup. Its September 2025 announcement said Bluetooth did not provide enough bandwidth for lossless audio at that time. That statement describes Spotify’s then-current setup, not a permanent rule for every future Bluetooth standard or device.
For the cleanest comparison Spotify recommends Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers. The company recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps internet connection for its best lossless listening experience; that is a connection recommendation, not a guarantee of audible improvement or uninterrupted playback.

How to turn on Spotify Lossless
Spotify says the option must be enabled separately on each device. On a supported Spotify app, use this path:
- Open Settings & Privacy.
- Choose Media Quality.
- Select Lossless for Wi-Fi, cellular or downloads, as appropriate.
For a third-party device, use the Spotify Connect device settings. Lossless playback depends on eligible music and supported devices, so selecting the setting alone does not establish that every track and connection is being delivered losslessly. Spotify’s current setup and troubleshooting guidance is on its Lossless audio quality support page.

When should you choose compressed quality instead?
Higher streaming quality uses more mobile data, and higher-quality downloads take up more storage. Spotify also adjusts quality by default to help avoid stuttering. If playback buffers, Spotify suggests lowering the quality setting or improving the connection.

- Choose a lower setting when conserving cellular data or avoiding buffering matters more than maximum fidelity.
- Choose Lossless when it is available and you have a compatible playback path and connection, particularly if you want the delivered lossless file rather than a compressed stream.
- Use Wi-Fi for lossless streaming when practical; use wired headphones or speakers if you want to avoid the compression Spotify currently applies to Bluetooth transmission.
You do not need new equipment to use Spotify’s compressed modes, and the evidence does not show that buying a particular headphone will make a difference audible to you.
How to make a fair listening comparison
A comparison is only useful if it isolates the quality setting rather than changing several variables at once.
- Use the same recording and, as far as possible, the same master for both listens.
- Match playback loudness. A louder version can seem more impressive even when the format is not the reason.
- Use a path that can carry each mode being compared; for a Lossless comparison, avoid Bluetooth in Spotify’s documented setup.
- Keep device processing and other playback conditions consistent, and note which setting and connection you used.
Spotify applies loudness normalization to compressed and lossless playback on supported paths. For Premium listeners, its settings include Normal at -14 dB LUFS, Loud at -11 dB LUFS and Quiet at -19 dB LUFS; Spotify says the Normal target uses the ITU 1770 standard. Its mastering guidance also says it leaves 1 dB of headroom for lossy encodings. Normalization is not applied in the web player or on some third-party devices, so playback paths can differ in ways unrelated to codec quality. See Spotify’s volume normalization guidance and audio quality support page.
