Does SPF Really Mean You Can Stay in the Sun Longer? What a 2017 Study Found

A 2017 study modeled how laboratory SPF ratings may differ from protection in natural sunlight. Its authors reject treating SPF as a multiplier for safe time outdoors.

No. SPF is not a reliable countdown clock for how long you can stay in the sun. In a 2017 analysis, researchers Brian Diffey and Uli Osterwalder argued that laboratory SPF labels may overstate the protection people can expect in natural sunlight. Their estimate was a model, not a field test of every sunscreen, and it does not tell an individual when they will burn.

What the 2017 sunscreen study actually concluded

Diffey and Osterwalder’s paper, “Labelled sunscreen SPFs may overestimate protection in natural sunlight,” appeared in Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences in 2017. It analyzes why laboratory SPF results might differ from expected protection outdoors; it does not report a comparison test of retail brands. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s paper page and PubMed’s abstract identify the publication and its findings.

The abstract says that for products labeled SPF 50+, it may not be possible to achieve more than 25-fold protection under natural sunlight. This is the authors’ estimate from their analysis, not a measured result for every product or a guarantee of the protection a particular person receives.

The authors directly rejected the familiar time-multiplier interpretation: “The popular interpretation of the SPF that it can be thought of as how much longer skin covered with sunscreen takes to burn in sunlight compared with unprotected skin, can no longer be defended.” In other words, SPF 30 does not mean you can safely stay outside 30 times longer.

Why laboratory SPF and outdoor protection can differ

Testing uses a standardized application

As reported by Chemistry World in 2017, laboratory testing assumes an even sunscreen application of 2 mg/cm². People may apply less than that or spread sunscreen unevenly, which can reduce the protection they receive compared with the test conditions.

Sunlight and laboratory simulators are not identical

The report explains that UV solar simulators filter visible light, while natural sunlight includes visible wavelengths. The paper considers whether this difference in spectrum affects erythema—the skin reddening used in SPF assessment—and the protection estimated for natural sunlight. It is a proposed explanation for a lab-to-outdoor difference, not evidence that SPF labels are fraudulent.

Protection can be reduced after application

Rubbing and perspiration can also reduce sunscreen on the skin. The amount and evenness applied, along with what happens to the product outdoors, are relevant to the difference between a controlled test and real use.

How to interpret the study’s estimates

Chemistry World reported that the researchers estimated SPF 30 might provide around half its claimed value under typical midday summer sunlight conditions in the UK and southern Europe. That estimate is specific to those conditions and locations; it should not be generalized to every climate, sunscreen, or person.

The paper’s SPF 50+ estimate and its SPF 30 estimate are modeled expectations, not direct field measurements of all products. The study did not test or endorse a brand, measure cancer outcomes, or establish a person’s burn time. There is no basis for using either estimate to calculate how long it is safe to remain outdoors.

What to do instead: current US FDA guidance

The 2017 analysis is separate from current US regulator advice. The FDA recommends choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and reapplying at least every two hours. Check the specific product label for water-resistance instructions and when to reapply after swimming or sweating. See the FDA’s sun-safety guidance for its current recommendations.
