Sometimes—but faster token generation does not automatically mean a coding agent finishes its task sooner. Token-level speculative decoding can reduce generation latency when a draft model proposes useful tokens quickly enough for the target model to verify them efficiently. The end-to-end result also depends on tool calls, orchestration, workload, and which latency metric is measured.
How speculative decoding can speed up generation
A smaller draft model proposes one or more tokens; a larger target model checks those proposals, potentially accepting several in a single verification pass. The method adds draft-model computation, so its value depends on both the draft’s speed and the usefulness of its proposals—not acceptance behavior alone.
A 2025 NAACL study by Minghao Yan, Saurabh Agarwal, and Shivaram Venkataraman reports more than 350 experiments with LLaMA-65B and OPT-66B. Its authors found that draft-model latency strongly affected performance, while the draft’s general language-modeling capability did not strongly correlate with its performance as a speculative drafter. The paper also reports 111% higher throughput for its designed hardware-efficient draft model compared with existing draft models in the study’s evaluated setup. That figure is a result of that setup, not a general coding-agent speedup. Read the NAACL paper.
Why token speed and task time can diverge
A coding agent’s task may involve many model calls interleaved with tool execution, such as reading files, running tests, and applying edits. Time saved during model generation matters most when generation is a substantial part of the total. If tools, orchestration, or user waiting dominate, faster decoding may have a smaller effect on task completion.

A July 2026 Microsoft Research characterization of sampled GitHub Copilot traces describes 3.2 million users, 13 million sessions, 761 million LLM calls, and 95 trillion tokens. It characterizes agentic turns as autonomous loops of LLM calls coupled nearly one-to-one with tool execution. It also reports average KV-cache hit rates of 90% within a turn and 55% across turn boundaries; model switches and context compaction are among events that can invalidate cache state. These figures describe the sampled workload, not a causal test of speculative decoding. Read the Microsoft Research paper.
Which latency metric improved?
“Latency” can refer to different stages. A system may improve full-response time while making the first visible output slower. In a June 2026 preprint, RLM-Cascade reports median response time of 2,026 ms versus 3,698 ms for its Native Opus baseline across 125 production Claude Code requests, alongside a 45.8% API-cost reduction. The authors attribute the result to response-level routing in which a draft-only path handled many requests. This is not token-level speculative decoding within one target model, and the small, system-specific evaluation does not establish a general result.

The same preprint reports that its Remote Speculate configuration was 2.1 times slower than Native Opus for time-to-first-token (TTFT), because draft-then-verify execution delayed the first token. Report TTFT separately from complete-response latency whenever comparing systems. Read the RLM-Cascade preprint.
How to evaluate speculative decoding for a coding agent
A fair comparison should hold the agent and serving conditions steady, measure more than one latency stage, and check that faster output did not reduce task quality. SPEED-Bench, published in the Proceedings of Machine Learning Research for ICML 2026, emphasizes that speculative-decoding results depend on data and concurrency. Its authors warn that synthetic inputs can overestimate real-world throughput, optimal draft lengths can vary with batch size, and low-diversity data can bias results. The benchmark includes qualitative diversity and throughput splits spanning low-batch latency-sensitive through high-load conditions, and integrates with engines including vLLM and TensorRT-LLM. - Separate the clocks: measure TTFT, token inter-arrival or decode rate, complete model-response time, and end-to-end task time as distinct metrics.
- Account for draft costs: record draft latency, target verification cost, draft length, and proposal acceptance behavior.
- Describe the coding workload: specify task type, prompt and context lengths, tool-use pattern, and whether runs are interactive or autonomous.
- Record serving conditions: report hardware, inference engine, concurrency or batch size, cache state, and warmup policy.
- Pair speed with outcomes: report task success or code correctness alongside latency.
- Repeat runs: include the number of independent runs and a stated summary statistic; small samples can be sensitive to which requests are selected.
GitHub’s published evaluation of its agent harness illustrates useful controls: equivalent settings, multiple independent runs, and pass@1 reporting. It also notes that its normalized configuration differs from tuned public benchmark submissions, so results should be interpreted within the stated configuration. This is a methodology reference, not evidence that speculative decoding improves the harness. Read GitHub’s evaluation.

Published evidence supports a conditional claim: speculative decoding can improve token-generation performance when the draft is fast and effective, but whether that reduces coding-agent task latency must be measured for the particular workload and serving setup. The cited production-scale Copilot characterization explains why tool-coupled agent work differs from a simple generation benchmark; the RLM-Cascade preprint illustrates that response-level routing can produce a different trade-off from token-level decoding. Neither establishes a universal end-to-end latency improvement from token-level speculative decoding.
