Does Spectrum WiFi Use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz? What to Know

Spectrum routers can support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, even when they use a single WiFi name. Router generation determines whether bands appear separately and what setup controls are available.

Spectrum WiFi can use both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. On current Advanced WiFi and WiFi 6 routers, the two bands generally share one network name, and the router selects a band for each device. Older Spectrum routers may show separate network names for each band. Some Spectrum WiFi 6E routers also support 6 GHz, but that does not apply to every model.

How Spectrum’s 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands differ

Spectrum’s setup guidance describes 2.4 GHz as the broader-coverage option and 5 GHz as the faster option for newer devices closer to the router. These are general tradeoffs, not promised range or speed figures for a particular home; walls, distance, interference, router placement, and the device itself affect results.

A device must also support the band it uses. Some smart-home devices, including certain cameras and other connected devices, work only on 2.4 GHz. If setup instructions mention “2.4 MHz,” they generally mean 2.4 GHz: GHz is the unit used for these WiFi bands.

Why you may see one WiFi name or two

Current Advanced WiFi and WiFi 6 routers

Spectrum says its Advanced WiFi router uses one network name (SSID) for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, unlike older-generation routers with separate names. A shared name does not mean there is only one band: compatible devices can use either, with the router steering them automatically. See Spectrum’s Advanced WiFi 6 setup instructions and its Advanced Home WiFi guidance.

Older routers

Some older Spectrum routers display a distinct network name for each band. If you see names that identify 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz separately, choose the 2.4 GHz network for a device that requires that band. The router’s label and model-specific instructions can help you identify the right network and credentials. Spectrum’s self-install instructions describe the older-style setup and the general range-versus-speed tradeoff.

WiFi 6E routers

Spectrum’s documented WiFi 6E router supports 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz concurrently, with a unified network name and intelligent client steering. This is a feature of that specified model, not evidence that every Spectrum router supports 6 GHz. A device needs 6 GHz capability to use that band.

How to connect a 2.4 GHz-only device

  1. Identify your router. Check the equipment label for its model, or consult Spectrum’s equipment-manuals index to find model-specific documentation.
  2. Check whether your router uses one name or separate names. If it has separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, connect the device to the 2.4 GHz network. If it uses one shared name, use that network and let the router select the band.
  3. Follow the device maker’s setup process. Some setup flows require the phone and the smart device to be on the same network. If the device only supports 2.4 GHz and setup cannot proceed on a shared-name network, check Spectrum’s current app or account guidance for your router model.
  4. Use a temporary band option only if your model supports it. In a May 2025 Spectrum Community response, a verified employee moderator described a 30-minute option on supported Advanced WiFi routers to put the setup phone on 2.4 GHz. Availability and controls are model-specific; consult the current Spectrum instructions for your equipment rather than assuming every router has this option. See the Spectrum Community discussion.

How to identify or change your WiFi settings

Start with the router model and its manual, because available controls vary by generation. Spectrum’s app and account support pages explain how to change the WiFi name or password and manage connected devices. If you change the name or password, you will need to update the saved credentials on devices already connected to that network.
