The saved page can retain styles, images, frames and fonts, but that does not mean every linked destination is saved or that every site will look and behave exactly as it did online. SingleFileZ has since been merged into SingleFile, whose self-extracting file format is the current continuation path.
Will the formatting look the same offline?
SingleFileZ’s goal is a faithful copy of a page at the time it is captured. Its documentation describes capturing CSS, images, frame contents and fonts, including some resources that are present but not displayed or cached. That makes the format useful for offline reading, but it is not a promise of pixel-perfect rendering across all websites, browsers or future environments. The result depends on what the page and its resources allow the extension to capture.

If a saved page looks incomplete, consider whether a resource was omitted or whether a save-speed option traded completeness for faster processing. The SingleFileZ FAQ notes that removing frames or choosing not to save deferred images can leave resources missing.

A link visible in the saved page is not the same as a saved copy of its destination. The official documentation does not promise that every link is rewritten to an offline copy or that linked pages will be available without a network connection. A link may remain clickable but still require internet access to open its target. Check the particular saved file before relying on offline navigation.

Why can interactive parts stop working?
Appearance and behavior are separate. The current SingleFile FAQ says scripts are blocked by default because they can change rendering and are not guaranteed to work offline. As a result, elements such as maps, carousels or expandable sections may look different or fail to respond in the saved page. The FAQ describes options for changing script and content handling, but enabling more content is a tradeoff—not a guarantee that a live site’s interactions will work offline.
What should I use now that SingleFileZ was merged?
The SingleFileZ repository says the project has been completely merged into SingleFile. To continue using its self-extracting format, use SingleFile’s File format setting and select the self-extracting file format. How to troubleshoot a saved page
- Styles or images are missing: Revisit the save settings and avoid options that remove frames or skip deferred images if those resources matter. Some pages may still prevent complete capture.
- Saving takes too long: The SingleFileZ FAQ suggests disabling “remove hidden elements” and “remove unused styles” to reduce processing time. These choices can affect what is retained, so inspect the output afterward.
- The file will not open from your filesystem: The SingleFileZ FAQ documents browser-specific restrictions for
.zip.htmlfiles: Firefox and Safari can view them under stated conditions, while Chrome requires the extension. It says serving the saved file from a web server avoids those restrictions. Browser and extension behavior can change, so check current settings. - A link or control does nothing offline: The target may not be included in the saved file, or the control may depend on scripts or live network services. A saved page is not a complete offline copy of an entire website.
Is it a web archive?
SingleFile says it is not intended as a professional web-archiving tool and points readers to WARC-based tools for that purpose. Treat a self-extracting page as a convenient snapshot for reading or sharing, not as proof of archival completeness.
