A large study of Bluesky posts linking to scholarly articles found higher interaction and greater textual originality than earlier reported results for X. That is evidence about a particular sample—not proof that every science post or communicator will do better on Bluesky.
What the studies found
In a July 2025 preprint, Er-Te Zheng, Xiaorui Jiang, Zhichao Fang and Mike Thelwall analyzed more than 2.6 million Bluesky posts that referenced 532,302 scholarly articles. The posts dated from January 2023 through July 2025, and the researchers integrated article metadata from OpenAlex. Their abstract reports higher interaction—likes, reposts, replies and quotes—and greater textual originality than previously reported for X. Read the preprint record.

The comparison is not a controlled, same-period experiment: the Bluesky results were compared with earlier reporting about X. It therefore supports a finding about the observed posts and comparison, not a universal ranking of the platforms.

Those figures are the newspaper’s report of the study, not a separate randomized comparison. The Guardian’s report also quoted co-author Er-Te Zheng describing the scholarly posts as more original and more strongly engaged with than those on X.

How science posts differ in style
A peer-reviewed 2026 study offers a separate comparison of the platforms’ science-related language. It analyzed English-language posts containing the term “science” during a matched observation window: 8,697 Bluesky posts and 348,900 X posts. Bluesky posts were longer and more complex on several measures, while X posts were easier to read and addressed readers more directly. The study in Frontiers in Research Metrics and Analytics interprets these patterns as consistent with more peer-oriented discussion on Bluesky and more audience-oriented dissemination on X, but did not directly measure who made up each platform’s audience.
| Measure | Bluesky | X |
|---|---|---|
| Average post length | 30.6 words | 28.7 words |
| Complex-word density | 0.108 | 0.092 |
| Aggregate technical score | 0.0436 | 0.0382 |
| Flesch–Kincaid grade | 10.02 | 9.07 |
| Second-person pronoun use | 0.0093 | 0.0153 |
| Posts referencing multiple disciplines | 13.8% | 17.8% |
The disciplinary mix also differed. Health and medicine accounted for 23.9% of Bluesky field assignments and 19.2% of X assignments; climate and environment accounted for 12.2% and 8.7%, respectively. Mathematics and statistics accounted for 4.1% on Bluesky and 9.6% on X. These are shares of field assignments, not shares of all posts on either platform.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Engagement is not the same as universal reach
The 2025 analysis concerns Bluesky posts referring to scholarly works, rather than all science communication. Its comparison with previously reported X results cannot isolate the effect of platform design or guarantee the same results for a particular account, topic or audience.

The later study retrieved English-language posts containing “science.” Specialized research discussion can be missed if a post does not use that word, so the sample is not a census of science content. The authors also note that platform development stages and a self-selected research community on Bluesky may help explain differences.

Style does not prove audience composition
Longer, more technical writing may fit peer exchange, while more direct and readable language may suit broad dissemination. Those are interpretations of text patterns, not direct measurements of who reads or participates in each platform.

- Decide what engagement means: distinguish likes and reposts from replies and quote posts; the 2025 study counted all four types of interaction.
- Match the writing to the reader: Bluesky’s sample was longer and more technically complex on average; X’s was easier to read and used more direct second-person language.
- Check disciplinary fit: the 2026 sample assigned different proportions to fields, including greater representation of mathematics and statistics on X and of health, medicine, climate and environment on Bluesky.
- Account for discovery and audience size: the cited studies do not establish a general winner for reach, nor do they directly measure each communicator’s potential audience.
- Compare like with like: when evaluating your own activity, consider the topic, post type, observation period and intended audience alongside the platform.
The strongest conclusion is bounded: scholarly-article posts in a large Bluesky sample showed stronger interaction and greater originality than earlier reported X results, while a later study found that science-related posts also differed in style and field mix. Neither study establishes that the pattern applies to every science communicator or that platform design caused it.
