A Roku Ultra can work with an infrared (IR) remote only if that remote is compatible with the exact Ultra model. Roku’s support pages explain how its simple IR remotes work, but do not provide an IR-compatibility list covering every Ultra generation. Before buying a replacement, find your model number and confirm that the remote listing explicitly supports it.
How IR remotes work with Roku players
Roku calls its non-voice infrared controller a simple remote. It sends commands using IR, so you need to point it toward the front of the player and keep the path clear. A cabinet door, an object in front of the receiver area, or a player positioned out of the remote’s line of sight can prevent commands from registering. Roku’s guide to identifying your remote describes the distinction between simple and voice remotes.

A Roku voice remote connects wirelessly to the player and does not need to be aimed at it. A voice or microphone/search button is a practical clue that a remote is a voice model; a simple remote has no voice button.

“Roku Ultra” refers to multiple models, and the name alone is not enough to establish that a particular replacement remote will work. On the player, open Settings > System > About and note the model number. Roku’s Roku Ultra overview identifies model 4850 as Roku Ultra and model 4801 as Roku Ultra LT.

Roku’s voice-remote compatibility table lists Ultra models 4640, 4660, 4661, 4662, 4670, and 4850 as compatible with Roku Voice Remote but not Voice Remote Pro; models 4800, 4801, and 4802 are listed as compatible with both. These are voice-remote requirements, not an IR-remote compatibility matrix, so they cannot confirm whether a given simple remote works with any of those Ultra models. Choosing a replacement remote
When considering a replacement Roku remote, use the model number from Settings and check the product listing for explicit compatibility with that model. Do not rely on “Roku Ultra” alone or assume that a remote described as IR works with every Ultra generation. Roku says replacement remotes are available through Roku and major retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy, and recommends checking compatibility before purchase. Troubleshoot an IR remote that misses button presses
- Check the remote type. A simple remote uses IR; a voice remote connects wirelessly. Roku explains how to identify them in its remote identification guide.
- Aim at the front of the player. Move objects that block the path between the remote and the player’s front receiver area. Roku lists blocked or partially blocked IR signals among common causes of missed presses.
- Check the batteries. Reseat them or try fresh batteries. Low or dead batteries are another common cause Roku identifies in its IR remote troubleshooting guide.
- Confirm replacement compatibility. If the remote still does not work, check its listing against the exact Ultra model number rather than assuming all Ultra players share the same remote compatibility.
Use the Roku mobile app as a temporary control
The Roku mobile app can control a player only when the player is powered on and connected to your home Wi-Fi network, and the phone or tablet is on that same network. It will not help you reconnect a player that is off or not connected to Wi-Fi. Roku lists the app as an option in its lost-remote guidance.
