For nearby sharing, Google’s instructions emphasize local connectivity such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; they do not say that every nearby transfer uses cellular data. But when an Android phone shares a file with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac using a QR code, the recipient downloads it through an internet link. Google warns that mobile-data charges may apply if Wi-Fi is not being used. Google does not publish a universal Quick Share speed, so there is no reliable official Mbps figure or fixed time for sending a file.
Does Quick Share use mobile data?
There is no single yes-or-no answer for every Quick Share transfer. First identify the route. Google documents nearby sharing as a local-device workflow, while its QR-code method for sharing from Android to Apple devices depends on internet access. The mobile-data warning applies specifically to that QR route; it should not be treated as proof that all Quick Share transfers use cellular data.

| Nearby sharing between supported devices | Google’s Android-to-Windows instructions call for Wi-Fi or Ethernet, Bluetooth, a shared network, and nearby devices. Its Pixel guidance also refers to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. | The cited instructions do not establish that every nearby transfer consumes cellular data. The QR-route warning does not automatically apply. Google’s Android-to-Windows requirements and Pixel Quick Share guidance. |
| Android to iPhone, iPad, or Mac by QR code | The QR code opens a secure download link, and both devices need internet access. | If Wi-Fi is not used, mobile-data charges may apply. Google provides a “Use mobile data” setting in Quick Share settings. Google Play Help’s Quick Share instructions. |
For the QR method, internet access is required, but that does not mean cellular data is inevitable: Wi-Fi can provide the connection instead. If avoiding mobile-data use or charges matters, connect to Wi-Fi and check the Quick Share “Use mobile data” setting before sharing. The setting name and behavior can differ on Galaxy devices running Android 10 and One UI 2.1 or later, as Google notes in its guidance.

How the QR-code route differs from nearby sharing
Nearby transfers
Nearby sharing is intended for devices close to each other. In Google’s documented Android-to-Windows setup, the devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and the Windows computer and Android device should be on the same network. That is a local-network setup, not the same flow as generating a QR code for an Apple recipient. Google’s instructions do not promise that cellular data is never used in every nearby configuration, so the safe answer is limited: the published Windows guidance emphasizes the local connection requirements and does not state that every such transfer consumes mobile data.

Wi-Fi’s role in this setup should not be confused with a published transfer-speed guarantee. The official instructions describe connectivity prerequisites and troubleshooting, not a single method or rate that applies to all devices. Avoid assuming that a particular transfer always uses Wi-Fi Direct or that a particular network arrangement produces a fixed result.
QR sharing to Apple devices
When the recipient is an iPhone, iPad, or Mac without Quick Share support for AirDrop, Google’s documented route is different: the Android sender shows a QR code, and the recipient uses it to access a secure download link. Both devices need an internet connection for this route. If the recipient or sender is using a cellular connection rather than Wi-Fi, data use and charges may be relevant.

Google says QR-shared files are end-to-end encrypted, uploaded to Google servers, and available to download for 24 hours. Google also says this process does not use personal Google Drive storage. These details apply to the QR sharing route described by Google; they should not be read as general limits or handling rules for every Quick Share method.
How to avoid cellular data charges when using QR sharing
- Connect to Wi-Fi before starting. Google requires internet access for both devices on the QR route, and says mobile-data charges may apply if Wi-Fi is not used. Use Wi-Fi where available on the Android device and the receiving Apple device.
- Check the setting on Android. Open Quick Share settings and look for “Use mobile data.” Google identifies this as the setting for managing mobile-data use on the QR route. If you are using a Galaxy phone, note that Google flags possible differences for devices running Android 10 and One UI 2.1 or later.
- Confirm the recipient’s connection too. The Apple device needs internet access to retrieve the QR-linked file. If either device must use cellular service, that device may incur data use; Google’s warning does not specify a fixed amount for a particular file.
- For large or many files, check the QR route’s limits. Google states a maximum of 10 GB shared per 24 hours, up to 1,000 files in one session, and a maximum of 20 Apple-platform receivers at a time. Files remain available to download for 24 hours. These are route limits, not speed figures.
The cited instructions do not give a per-file mobile-data calculation or say how much data a specific transfer will consume under every device and network configuration. A file’s size is not a substitute for a published cellular-usage estimate, because the actual connection and route matter. To minimize uncertainty, use Wi-Fi on both ends and verify the mobile-data setting instead of relying on an assumption about all Quick Share transfers.

How fast is Quick Share?
Google does not publish a universal Quick Share transfer speed in the help pages cited here. There is no official typical or maximum Mbps number, nor an official promise that a file of a given size will finish in a particular number of minutes. Google’s Windows troubleshooting guidance acknowledges that transfers can be slow, but recommends checking connection and device conditions rather than offering a benchmark.
That means claims such as “Quick Share always runs at a particular Mbps” or “a 1 GB file takes a fixed number of minutes” are not supported as general guidance. A meaningful speed result would need to identify the two devices, their operating-system versions, the file, the connection type and quality, and the conditions during the transfer. Without those details, a number can mislead rather than help you plan.

For a real transfer, think in terms of whether the connection is working well rather than expecting a guaranteed speed. Wi-Fi conditions can affect the Windows workflow, and some office Wi-Fi networks block device-to-device sharing. Bluetooth, device visibility, proximity, and whether the devices are on the same network are also relevant checks in Google’s Windows setup and troubleshooting advice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix a slow or failed Android-to-Windows transfer
These checks follow Google’s guidance for Android-to-Windows Quick Share. They are not a speed-enhancement formula, and they cannot guarantee a particular rate. Work through them in order so you can distinguish a network restriction from a basic pairing or distance problem.
Best Value
- Check the network. Confirm that the Android device and Windows PC are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, or that the PC has the required Ethernet connection. Some office networks block device-to-device communication, even when both devices appear to be connected to the same Wi-Fi.
- Check Bluetooth and sharing availability. Make sure Bluetooth is on for the relevant devices, and check that Quick Share is available and the devices can be seen for sharing. Google includes Bluetooth and visibility among the setup and troubleshooting factors for Android-to-Windows transfers.
- Bring the devices closer. Google lists proximity of up to 5 metres as a requirement for the Android-to-Windows setup. If sharing is slow or the devices have trouble connecting, Google recommends bringing them within 30 centimetres (1 foot) while troubleshooting. These are guidance distances, not guaranteed operating ranges or speed claims. Google’s Android-to-Windows sharing instructions.
- Try another network if the current one blocks sharing. If a workplace network prevents device-to-device traffic, Google suggests connecting the PC to the phone’s hotspot. This is a troubleshooting option; it changes the network path and may involve mobile data, so consider your data plan before using it.
- Retry after correcting the connection issue. Once network access, Bluetooth, visibility, and proximity are in order, try the transfer again. Google’s guidance provides no numeric test to determine whether a slow result is normal for your particular devices.
Google’s slow-transfer guidance is qualitative rather than a full speed diagnosis. It does not specify a file-size threshold at which a transfer should be considered slow, assign a target Mbps rate, or give a single fix for every network. If the same transfer still struggles after these checks, the official material cited here does not establish a universal cause.
What the QR route’s sharing limits mean
| Google-stated limit or handling detail | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| 10 GB per 24 hours | Maximum amount stated for QR sharing to iPhone, iPad, or macOS devices; it is a route-specific sharing limit, not a speed measurement. |
| Up to 1,000 files per session | Maximum file count stated for a QR share session. |
| Up to 20 receivers at a time | Maximum number stated for Apple-platform receivers on the documented QR route. |
| 24-hour download window | QR-shared content remains available for download during this period. |
| Google server handling | Google says files are end-to-end encrypted, uploaded to Google servers, and do not use personal Google Drive storage. |
Google does not state that these QR-route limits apply to nearby Android transfers or to Android-to-Windows sharing. Keep the limits attached to the specific Apple-platform QR method rather than treating them as universal Quick Share rules. The figures appear in Google Play Help; the page does not state a publication year for these details.
