Does Pulsetto Work? What the Evidence Says About Vagus Nerve Stimulation

Pulsetto’s study and broader vagus nerve stimulation reviews show promising but preliminary findings. Here’s what they can—and can’t—tell you about this device.

There isn’t enough evidence to say Pulsetto reliably treats stress, anxiety, or sleep problems. The company reports favorable self-reported results after four weeks, but its public study summary describes an open-label comparison of two ways of using Pulsetto—not a test against a sham device. Reviews of vagus nerve stimulation show promising sleep-related results across different protocols, but they do not establish that Pulsetto produces the same benefits.

What does Pulsetto’s own study show?

Pulsetto is a consumer device that stimulates the vagus nerve through the neck. Its science page describes a randomized, open-label, parallel-group study comparing unilateral with bilateral stimulation. The study examined psychological stress, anxiety, disturbed sleep, and hair cortisol and cortisone.

The company’s public summary reports improvements after four weeks in participants’ self-reported PHQ-9, GAD-7, and PSQI scores, which measure depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and sleep quality. It also reports decreases in hair cortisol, particularly with bilateral stimulation. The company says larger samples are needed to confirm the effects and their mechanisms.

Because participants knew which stimulation approach they received, and the comparison was between unilateral and bilateral use rather than active treatment and sham, the summary cannot show whether Pulsetto outperformed a placebo-like control. It also does not establish how much of the reported change was caused by the device. The public information cited here does not provide a sample size or enough detail to assess the full methods, so those figures and details should not be inferred from the summary. Do other vagus nerve stimulation studies support it?

Two 2026 reviews report favorable results for sleep-related outcomes, but their findings concern transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) protocols generally—not Pulsetto specifically. The stimulation site and methods matter: evidence for one approach cannot automatically be transferred to another.

Review Evidence covered What it reported What it means for Pulsetto
Choi, Choi, and Kang, Sleep Medicine Reviews (2026) 13 randomized parallel or crossover tVNS trials Overall favorable changes in sleep quality and insomnia severity. The review found better sleep-quality outcomes with auricular concha stimulation and noted age as a possible response moderator. The review includes varying tVNS protocols. Its concha-related result is not evidence that cervical stimulation with Pulsetto has the same effect. Review record
Lin et al., Psychology, Health & Medicine (2026) 14 randomized controlled trials of auricular VNS; 11 were included in meta-analyses Pooled results favored auricular VNS for sleep quality (SMD = -0.57; 95% CI, -0.86 to -0.28), anxiety scale scores (SMD = -0.53; 95% CI, -0.74 to -0.32), and depression scale scores (SMD = -0.67; 95% CI, -1.09 to -0.25). The authors caution that heterogeneity and limited clinical interpretability make the evidence preliminary. These estimates are for auricular stimulation, not Pulsetto’s cervical device. The review calls for larger, well-designed trials. Review record

SMD means standardized mean difference, a way to express pooled results across studies using different scales. These pooled estimates describe group-level findings; they do not predict whether a particular person will benefit.

Does vagus nerve stimulation help with anxiety or sleep?

The reviews offer a reason to study tVNS further, particularly for sleep, but they do not establish a reliable treatment for an individual’s anxiety or sleep problem. The evidence varies by stimulation site, device, protocol, study population, duration, and outcome measure. Some outcomes are questionnaire scores, while others, such as hair cortisol, are physiological measures; a change in one does not by itself prove a meaningful improvement in daily life.

  • Device-specific evidence: Pulsetto’s reported study concerns its own device, but its open-label design and comparison groups limit what it can establish about treatment efficacy.
  • Modality-level evidence: The reviews combine trials of tVNS or auricular VNS. Those results should not be treated as direct tests of Pulsetto.
  • Practical takeaway: Consider these findings preliminary rather than a basis for replacing established care or delaying evaluation of persistent symptoms.

Is Pulsetto FDA-cleared for stress, anxiety, or sleep?

The FDA classification database describes a Class II category for a non-invasive vagus nerve stimulator intended to treat cluster headache and reduce the frequency of cluster headache attacks. That classification concerns the described device category and indication; it does not establish that Pulsetto is FDA-cleared, nor does it establish clearance for stress, anxiety, or sleep claims. Is Pulsetto safe to use?

Pulsetto’s manufacturer lists precautions and contraindications on its safety page. These are manufacturer instructions, not an independent assessment of safety. Read the current product directions before use, and ask a clinician about your own medical history and risks.

  • The manufacturer advises against use with active implanted electronic devices, metal implanted at or near the neck, or simultaneous use with another stimulation device.
  • It lists certain uncontrolled cardiovascular conditions and cardiac histories as reasons for caution or contraindication.
  • It advises against placing the device on damaged or irritated skin or using it in risky situations such as driving.
  • It says to discontinue use if symptoms such as dizziness, chest pain, or excessive irritation occur.

Is Pulsetto worth considering?

That depends on what you expect it to do. If you want a proven treatment for anxiety, stress, or insomnia, the available evidence does not establish Pulsetto as one. If you are considering it as an optional wellness device, weigh its cost and the manufacturer’s safety guidance against the uncertainty: encouraging findings from broader tVNS research are not a guarantee of benefit from this product. For persistent or severe symptoms, discuss treatment options with a qualified clinician rather than relying on a consumer device alone.
