Does PS5 PSSR Improve Frame Rates or Just Image Quality?

PSSR is not an automatic FPS boost. Its effect on image quality and performance depends on each PS5 Pro game and mode.

PSSR is primarily an image reconstruction and upscaling feature, not an automatic frame-rate boost. On PS5 Pro, a game may use PSSR alongside the console’s graphics capabilities to improve image quality while holding a frame-rate target, or to balance visual fidelity and performance differently. The result depends on the game and its mode; PSSR alone does not promise more frames per second.

What PSSR does—and what it does not promise

Sony describes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) as an AI library that analyzes frames pixel by pixel to improve graphics. Its direct job is image reconstruction: rendering a game at one resolution and reconstructing a sharper image for display at a higher output resolution. Sony’s PS5 Pro page presents AI-enhanced resolution separately from the console’s broader performance capabilities, so the two should not be treated as the same feature. Sony’s PS5 Pro overview

In a March 16, 2026 PlayStation.Blog update, Sony said the newer PSSR version offers more precise reconstruction, more stable motion, and developers greater flexibility to balance performance and visual fidelity on PS5 Pro. Those improvements describe the rendering tool and the choices it enables; they are not a universal promise of extra frames per second. Sony’s March 16, 2026 update

How game-specific modes can affect frame rate

Developers decide how to use PS5 Pro’s graphics capability and PSSR in each game mode. A mode may use PSSR to increase output resolution while preserving a target frame rate; another may prioritize smoother or more consistent performance. The examples below are developer descriptions published by Sony, not controlled tests isolating PSSR’s contribution from other hardware or game changes.

Game and source Developer-described mode or result What it indicates
The Last of Us Part I Remastered — Vincent Marxen, Lead Programmer, Naughty Dog; Sony’s PS5 Pro page A PS5 Pro enhanced rendering mode renders at 1440p, upscales to 4K with PSSR, and maintains a 60 fps target. PSSR is used to reach a higher output resolution while retaining a target rate; this does not show that PSSR raises that target. Source
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — Naoki Hamaguchi, Director, Square Enix; Sony’s PS5 Pro page An enhanced mode runs at 60 FPS and uses PSSR to achieve resolution on par with the game’s graphics mode. A mode-specific balance of resolution and frame rate, not a general PSSR uplift. Source
Stellar Blade — Dongki Lee, Technical Director and CTO, Shift Up; Sony’s PS5 Pro page The developer describes 4K at 50 fps or more with PSSR upscaling, and an 80 fps high-frame-rate option that requires a 120 Hz display. These are game-specific claims; the 80 fps option has an explicit display requirement. Source
Dragon Age: The Veilguard — Maciej Kurowski, Studio Technical Director, BioWare; Sony’s March 2026 update The developer says updated PSSR can provide visual improvements while retaining a stable frame rate in Fidelity and Performance modes. An example of improving visuals while maintaining stability, not evidence of a universal frame-rate increase. Source
Control and Alan Wake 2 — Tatu Aalto, Graphics Technical Director, Remedy; Sony’s March 2026 update The developer describes image-quality and stability improvements, including smoother-looking motion. Smoother-looking motion can reflect reconstruction and temporal stability; the statement does not claim a general frame-rate increase. Source
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — Naoki Hamaguchi, Square Enix; Sony’s March 2026 update The newer PSSR version restores fine detail such as hair and provides more stable image processing with less flicker and ghosting. These are image-quality and stability improvements, not a stated frame-rate gain. Source

How to compare a game’s PS5 Pro modes

When a game offers Fidelity, Performance, or an enhanced mode, compare its stated targets rather than assuming PSSR changes FPS in a predictable way.

  1. Check the frame-rate claim. Note the mode’s stated target or range, and whether it is a developer description or an independently measured result.
  2. Check the resolution path. Distinguish the resolution at which the game renders from the resolution sent to the display, and see whether PSSR is used for upscaling.
  3. Look for visual-stability details. Claims about finer detail, reduced flicker or ghosting, and more stable motion describe image quality; they do not by themselves establish a higher frame rate.
  4. Compare modes individually. PSSR gives developers flexibility, so a Fidelity mode and a Performance mode may use different tradeoffs.
  5. Verify display requirements for high-refresh modes. Sony says 120 Hz output requires both a supporting display and a game with a 120 Hz frame-rate mode. A 120 Hz display cannot create a mode the game does not provide. Sony’s display and video-output guidance

Does the “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” setting change FPS?

Sony describes this optional setting as improving image quality in certain compatible games, not as a frame-rate control. It is on by default and can be switched off at Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony says the setting is available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. Sony’s support guidance

Display output settings and game performance are separate. Sony’s guidance also notes that 1440p output can be tested for 60 Hz or 120 Hz and VRR where supported; the available signal depends on the display, while the game must supply the relevant mode. Sony’s display and video-output guidance

Is there a general FPS uplift from PSSR?

Sony’s cited material gives title- and mode-specific developer descriptions, but no general measured percentage of frame-rate uplift attributable to PSSR alone. Treat claims such as a 60 fps target or an 80 fps option as applying to the named game and mode, not as a prediction for every PSSR-compatible title.
