No. PS5 AI upscaling depends on the console, the game and its settings; a TV cannot make an unsupported game use it. Sony’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is for PS5 Pro games that support it. Sony has separately announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for base PS5, initially in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Your TV and HDMI connection affect the video signal the console can output—not whether a game implements either upscaler.
Which PS5 consoles and games support AI upscaling?
Sony has two named upscaling technologies with different console scopes. PSSR is associated with PS5 Pro; QSSR is a separate technology announced for the base PS5. Neither should be treated as a system-wide feature that automatically applies to every game.

| Technology | Console | What support means |
|---|---|---|
| PSSR | PS5 Pro | Applies in games that support PSSR. Sony said on February 27, 2026 that it had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles as of that announcement. This is a dated figure, not a complete or continuously updated compatibility list. Sony Interactive Entertainment, February 27, 2026 |
| QSSR | Base PS5 | Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first QSSR titles on October 1, 2026, and said the technology would be offered broadly to PlayStation developers. Developer access is not the same as implementation in every game. Sony Interactive Entertainment, October 1, 2026 |
PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. Sony’s February 2026 announcement described an updated version rolling out globally to PS5 Pro players and a console setting for supported games. The setting does not add PSSR to a title that was not built to support it. Sony’s March 2026 update discussed additional game integrations and said results can vary by title. Support can depend on a game update and its own graphics settings. For example, Ubisoft added PSSR to the PS5 Pro version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows with title update 1.0.2. Ubisoft said players who had already played needed to activate it in the game’s video menu; for new players, it was activated by default. That is one developer’s implementation, not a rule for every PS5 game. Ubisoft, April 11, 2025

Does the TV determine whether upscaling works?
No. Game support and display output are separate checks. A compatible game and console determine whether PSSR or QSSR is used. The TV, HDMI cable and any device between the console and TV determine which video modes can reach the screen, such as 4K resolution or 120 Hz. Sony says all PS5 consoles support 4K and HDR, but 4K output requires a compatible 4K display. PlayStation Support: 4K resolution
For 4K/120 Hz, the display and signal chain must support that mode. Sony identifies HDMI 2.1 in connection with 4K/120 Hz; its support guidance does not state that HDMI 2.1 is a general requirement for 4K output or for PSSR/QSSR. Match the TV and connection to the output mode you want rather than buying a particular HDMI specification just to enable game upscaling. PlayStation Support: 4K resolution PlayStation Support: 4K/120 Hz

How to check the PS5’s game and display settings
- Check the display signal: On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the detected HDMI device information, resolution and available output options. Sony says the console detects TV capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically. PlayStation Support
- Check PSSR image quality on PS5 Pro: On eligible CFI-7000 model-group consoles, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality. Sony says it is enabled by default and applies to certain PSSR-compatible games; it can be turned off. This does not make unsupported games compatible. PlayStation Support
- Check the game itself: Install the latest game update, then inspect its graphics, video or display settings for an upscaling option. Labels and defaults vary by title; Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows example required some existing players to enable PSSR in-game. Ubisoft
- Troubleshoot a missing video mode: If 4K/120 Hz is unavailable, verify the TV supports the signal, update its firmware, use the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz, connect the PS5 directly or check intermediary devices, and try the TV’s correct HDMI port. Then recheck resolution and transfer-rate settings on the console. These steps address signal output, not whether a game supports an upscaler. PlayStation Support
What to expect from image quality
Upscaling does not guarantee the same result in every game, or a result free from visual artifacts. Sony says the enhanced PSSR setting’s outcome varies by title and advises turning it off if unexpected visual effects occur. Ubisoft explains the underlying trade-off for Assassin’s Creed Shadows: rendering at a lower resolution can help frame rate, while affecting image clarity and potentially producing artifacts. These are vendor and developer descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Sony Interactive Entertainment, March 17, 2026 Ubisoft, April 11, 2025
