Adobe lists Premiere Pro as a native Apple-silicon app, and its requirements for Premiere 25.x named the original M1 as a minimum processor. Adobe’s current 26.x requirements, however, recommend M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, or newer. That distinction matters: compatibility does not mean every M1 Mac is equally suited to every editing workload.
What Adobe’s current requirements mean for an M1 Mac
Adobe’s system-requirements page for the listed Premiere Pro 26.x releases specifies macOS Sonoma (version 14) or later, 8 GB RAM minimum, and 8 GB unified memory minimum for Apple-silicon Macs. For recommended Apple hardware, Adobe names M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, or newer, and recommends 16 GB unified memory. These are published requirements, not a promise of a particular playback or export result. Adobe says the minimum specifications are for editing HD video, while the recommended specifications are for editing HD, 4K, or higher resolutions. Adobe’s current Premiere Pro requirements were last updated September 9, 2026.

In practical terms, an original M1 can meet Adobe’s stated minimum processor tier for the older 25.x release, but it is below the current page’s recommended Apple-silicon tier. If you are choosing a Mac for demanding projects, distinguish “the app is supported” from “Adobe recommends this hardware for the intended workload.”
Why older pages say M1 is the minimum
Adobe’s requirements page covering Premiere 25.x listed Apple M1 as the minimum processor, macOS Ventura (version 13) as the minimum operating system, and 16 GB unified memory as recommended for Apple silicon. Adobe’s newer 26.x requirements raise the listed minimum macOS release to Sonoma and recommend M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, or newer. The version you plan to install therefore matters; check Adobe’s requirements for that release rather than relying on an older compatibility summary. Adobe’s Premiere 25.x requirements were last updated March 30, 2026.

- MacBook Pro features a Magic Keyboard with a full-height function row and the industry-best Force Touch trackpad.
Does Premiere Pro run natively, or does it need Rosetta?
Adobe lists Premiere among the applications that run natively on Macs with Apple silicon. Current Premiere on an M1 Mac should not be described as requiring Rosetta. Adobe also says that, starting with version 24.0, its video and audio products no longer support Rosetta emulation. Adobe’s Apple-silicon compatibility information and Adobe’s Rosetta troubleshooting guidance explain the distinction.
What to know about hardware-accelerated video
Hardware acceleration depends on the chip tier and video format, so a general statement that “M1 supports every accelerated codec” would be too broad. Adobe’s documentation specifically says M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, or newer supports hardware-accelerated H.264 and H.265 encoding and decoding, including 10-bit 4:2:2 decoding. The cited statement does not establish the same support for the base M1. Adobe also notes an exception: HEVC HLG 4:2:0 10-bit encoding still relies on software. Adobe’s hardware-accelerated decoding and encoding documentation lists the details.

For a specific editing setup, check the source footage’s codec, bit depth, chroma subsampling, and HDR format against Adobe’s supported acceleration notes. The cited requirements and codec documentation do not provide a workload-specific benchmark for the original M1, so they cannot establish a guaranteed frame rate, smoothness, or export time.

How to decide whether your M1 Mac is suitable
- Check the Premiere version. Compare the version you intend to install with Adobe’s current system requirements; requirements can change between releases.
- Check macOS and memory. The current 26.x page lists macOS Sonoma 14, 8 GB RAM minimum, and 8 GB unified memory minimum for Apple silicon; it recommends 16 GB unified memory.
- Match the chip to the workload. Adobe’s current recommended Apple-silicon tier begins at M1 Pro, not the base M1. That recommendation is more relevant when evaluating 4K or higher-resolution editing than the bare compatibility answer.
- Identify your footage formats. Apply Adobe’s codec-specific acceleration notes rather than assuming that all H.264, H.265, or HDR work benefits equally.
- Plan storage for media. Adobe recommends a fast internal SSD for the application and cache, plus an additional high-speed drive for media. An external SSD can support that workflow, but Adobe does not make a separate media drive a condition of Premiere compatibility.
