Yes. PlayStation Portal can use Remote Play over broadband Wi-Fi away from home; it does not have to share the PS5’s Wi-Fi network. Your paired PS5 must be online and either powered on or in Rest Mode, with Remote Play enabled. PlayStation’s current guidance is at least 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience—not a guarantee of smooth play.
What you need for Remote Play away from home
- A paired PS5: Portal Remote Play connects to a PS5, not directly to a PS4. The PS5 must be connected to broadband and powered on or in Rest Mode.
- The same PlayStation account: Sign in to Portal and the PS5 with the account used to pair them.
- Remote Play enabled: On PS5, go to Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play.
- Broadband Wi-Fi where you are: PlayStation says 5 Mbps is the minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Actual quality depends on network conditions.
PlayStation’s [Portal product FAQ] says home Wi-Fi is not required. These speed figures are guidance, not a promise that a connection will be responsive or stable.

Prepare the PS5 before you leave
If you want Portal to wake the console while it is in Rest Mode, enable both network options below. Otherwise, the PS5 needs to be fully on for Remote Play.
- On PS5, update the system software and sign in with the PlayStation account you use on Portal.
- Go to Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- While still at home, connect Portal and PS5 and confirm Remote Play works. PlayStation notes the console may not appear in a search if it has been a while since you last signed in.

Using Portal on hotel or other public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi can work, but its speed, stability, and restrictions are controlled by the network operator. Hotel networks may require a sign-in or additional validation, and connection quality can affect play. PlayStation supports additional validation on certain public networks with Portal software version 3.0.1 or later. That flow requires a phone or tablet, and initial Portal setup on home Wi-Fi must already be complete. Availability depends on the network.
For a trip, complete the initial setup and test Remote Play at home first. Bring a phone or tablet in case the public network requires validation. A Wi-Fi connection that reaches the internet may still be unsuitable for a consistent play session; the stated Mbps guidance is not a latency or stability guarantee.

Remote Play and Cloud Streaming are different
Portal offers two distinct ways to stream games. The key difference is whether the game runs on your PS5 or on PlayStation’s cloud service.

Which games can you play?
Remote Play works with compatible games installed on the paired PS5, including compatible PS4 and PS5 titles. Portal does not connect to a PS4 console. Games that require VR hardware or additional peripherals are incompatible, and PlayStation says games that must be streamed on PS5 using PS Plus Premium are not compatible with Remote Play.
Cloud Streaming has a separate list of supported titles and is subject to its subscription, region, and account restrictions. A game being playable through Remote Play does not mean it is also available for cloud streaming, or vice versa.
