Google describes Now Playing as ambient music recognition on Pixel phones, not Pixel Watch. The watch can play music without a phone or internet if you have downloaded tracks, and an LTE model can stream away from your phone when it has cellular data. Those are playback options, not song recognition.
What Now Playing does—and which devices Google lists
Now Playing identifies music playing nearby using a Pixel phone’s on-device song library. If the phone does not recognize a track from that library, it may search the cloud. Google’s current app listing names Pixel 6 and newer phones with the March 2026 Pixel Drop update or later; it does not list Pixel Watch as a compatible device. Google’s Pixel phone help page explains the recognition feature, and the Google Play listing gives the app’s compatibility details.

That distinction matters when the phone is absent or offline: Google documents the recognition path on the phone, including possible cloud search for unrecognized songs. Its documentation does not describe Pixel Watch independently listening for and identifying ambient music, with or without an internet connection. Google’s March 2026 Pixel Drop announcement likewise presents Now Playing as Pixel’s built-in music-recognition tool and the standalone app as a place to track discoveries and favorites.

Yes, but playback is separate from Now Playing recognition. Google’s Pixel Watch music guidance distinguishes streaming from downloaded music:

| Watch setup | What you can do | Connection needed |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel Watch LTE | Stream music without the phone nearby | Cellular data connection; service and carrier availability may affect use |
| Pixel Watch Wi-Fi | Download and save music, or stream when the phone is nearby or the watch is on Wi-Fi | Downloads need a connection; streaming needs internet |
| Either model with downloaded tracks | Play saved music while disconnected from both phone and internet | No connection for playback of tracks already downloaded |
Google lists an internet connection as a YouTube Music streaming requirement. Service subscriptions and regional availability may also affect which music features you can use. Downloading tracks lets you listen offline; it does not make the watch recognize other music playing nearby.
Does offline Gemini identify songs on Pixel Watch?
No. Google’s offline Gemini examples for Pixel Watch 5 include playback commands such as “Skip this song” and “Turn the volume up.” These control music that is playing; they are not ambient song-identification requests. Google documents this offline mode for Google Gemini for Wear OS version 1.36 or later, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth switched off. See Google’s offline Gemini instructions for the feature’s scope.
