No—not as a universal rule. Comfort depends on the phone’s dimensions, how it fits your hand, and what you’re doing with it. The available smartphone studies do not identify either weight or thickness as the single factor that matters most for everyone; one found width significantly affected grip comfort.
What the studies say about phone comfort
Grip comfort depends on more than mass and thickness
A 2019 journal study by Lee and colleagues evaluated 72 young participants using controlled phone mockups. It considered height, width, thickness, edge roundness, hand length, and mass together. Width significantly influenced grip comfort and design attractiveness, but the study does not establish that width—or any other single measurement—dominates for all users.

In the conditions tested, a form measuring 140 × 65 (or 70) × 8 × 2.5 mm (height × width × thickness × edge roundness), paired with a mass of 122 g, was identified as a suitable design. Masses from 106–137 g were comparable in those conditions. These are findings from that study, not universal comfort limits or recommendations for phones on sale today. One-handed reach can make width especially noticeable
A 2016 study examined one-handed interaction with the rear surface of devices of different widths. In that specific task, a 90 mm device was associated with 12.3% greater discomfort than a 60 mm device. Maximum finger strokes caused 43.8% greater discomfort than neutral strokes, and participants with smaller hands reported discomfort ratings 11.9–18.2% higher. These results describe the tested task and participants; they should not be read as estimates for ordinary phone use generally. Read the study abstract on PubMed.

A specialized prototype study is not a general phone comparison
A 2019 study of a rollable-display prototype found that grip condition influenced comfort ratings more than prototype thickness during bilateral screen unrolling. Its thickness and bezel recommendations relate to that specialized task, not conventional smartphones, so they do not settle whether weight or thickness matters more in everyday use. How to compare phones for your own comfort
Compare weight and thickness alongside width, edge shape, and the way you hold the phone. For one-handed reach, width and the placement of controls may deserve more attention than a small difference in mass or depth, but the evidence supports this as a practical consideration—not a universal ranking.

- Check your phone model: Before you order, please confirm your phone model to find out which product is right for you
- For one-handed use: Check whether your thumb can reach the controls and screen areas you use without shifting your grip or stretching to the edge.
- For extended holding: Pay attention to how the phone feels in your usual grip over the kind of session that matters to you; the cited studies do not quantify a universally comfortable duration or weight.
- For a device with a case: Compare the assembled phone you will actually carry and hold, rather than relying only on bare-phone specifications.
- For a fair comparison: Hold the actual devices, or representative dummies if available, using your normal grip. Controlled mockups and lab tasks cannot predict every person’s experience.
Hand size, grip style, balance, case use, and holding time may all affect an individual’s experience, but the cited sources do not quantify how much each changes comfort. Treat them as factors to check for yourself rather than settled explanations for everyone.
Use specifications as a shortlist, not a comfort score
Manufacturers’ dimensions help identify phones worth trying, but a spec sheet cannot tell you how comfortable a particular shape will feel in your hand. For example, Apple lists the iPhone 16 at 170 g, 71.6 mm wide, 147.6 mm high, and 7.80 mm deep. Those figures describe that model; they are not a comfort recommendation. There is no established universal weight or thickness threshold for comfort in the available evidence. Use the numbers to narrow your options, then judge the whole shape and grip against your own hand and the task you care about.
