Does Optical or RCA Sound Better? Audio Quality and Limitations Explained

Optical carries digital audio; red-and-white RCA carries analog stereo, while a single RCA-style jack may be digital coaxial. The best connection depends on your devices and supported formats.

Neither optical nor RCA is inherently better sounding. Optical usually means digital TOSLINK; “RCA” can mean either red-and-white analog stereo connectors or a single RCA-style digital coaxial S/PDIF port. Those are different signal paths, so the right choice depends on the ports, audio format, and which device handles digital-to-analog conversion.

First, identify which RCA connection you mean

A TOSLINK optical cable carries digital audio as light pulses over fiber. A red-and-white RCA pair carries left and right analog audio. A single RCA-style jack may instead be a digital coaxial S/PDIF connection; it carries digital audio, not analog stereo. Sony’s explanation of optical and coaxial digital audio distinguishes the fiber-optic link from the RCA-connector digital coaxial link, while Philips’ connection guidance distinguishes stereo RCA from digital S/PDIF. Check the labels on both devices before choosing a cable.

Why the connection alone does not determine sound quality

When optical and digital coaxial carry the same compatible digital signal, the cable is not a separate quality tier. Philips says optical and coaxial digital connections are “equally good and identical since they are digital” for the selected home-theater models covered by its support guidance; that is not a universal comparison of every device or of analog RCA.

With optical, the receiving DAC or receiver converts the digital signal to analog. With red-and-white analog RCA, that conversion has already happened in the source device, and the receiving component accepts its analog output. Any difference can therefore depend on the source’s output settings, the DAC and processing in the source or destination, format compatibility, and the rest of the playback chain. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal audible winner in a controlled comparison.

Optical digital output and optical input TOSLINK optical cable Source output mode and receiver support for the selected format.
Coaxial digital S/PDIF output and input using RCA-style jacks 75-ohm coaxial S/PDIF cable Both ports must be digital coaxial S/PDIF, not analog RCA.

Red-and-white analog RCA output and analog RCA input Stereo RCA cable Use a line-level-compatible input; the source device is supplying the analog output.

For a digital-to-analog mismatch, Philips recommends a digital-audio-to-analog-audio converter. A converter is not just a cable: it performs the conversion. For example, the Pulse-Eight converter manual describes a product that accepts optical or coaxial S/PDIF and outputs stereo analog RCA. Check the exact converter’s manual rather than assuming that it accepts every format or sample rate.

Check PCM, Dolby, and DTS compatibility

S/PDIF over optical or coaxial can carry stereo PCM or encoded multichannel Dolby/DTS audio, but the destination must support or decode the signal it receives. A device may be connected correctly and still produce silence if it cannot decode the source’s bitstream. miniDSP’s protocol guidance explains the distinction between PCM and encoded multichannel streams and the need for a compatible decoder.

  • 【Professional Input Signal Processing】Analog to digital audio converter provides professional 24Bit/192KHz sampling rate, avoiding distortion of the original signal. Optical input supports signal processing up to 32, 44.1, 48, 96, 192 sample rates, and 24-bit bit streams
  • 【Plug and Play】SPDIF to RCA converter works great with HDTVs, set-top boxes, DVD/Blu-Ray players and game consoles. (NOTE: It is incompatible with 5.1 channel signal such as Dolby AC3, please adjust the audio output to PCM before use.)
  • 【Note】Before using the product, adjust the audio output format of the TV to PCM (Device Home→System Settings→Picture and Sound→Sound Settings→Digital Audio Output→PCM), and Volume can only be adjusted on the output device, not via the TV remote control. In addition, the product does not support connection to headphones

Compatibility is model-specific. Cambridge Audio states that its DacMagic 100 accepts two-channel LPCM/stereo PCM, not Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS. For that model, the connected TV or player should output two-channel PCM; that limitation should not be assumed for other DACs or receivers. Consult both device manuals and set the source to a format the receiving device supports.

Use the right cable and avoid common setup problems

  • Optical: Keep the connectors clean and avoid sharp bends in the cable, as Philips advises.
  • Digital coaxial: Cambridge Audio recommends a 75-ohm digital RCA interconnect; Focusrite likewise recommends purpose-made 75-ohm coaxial S/PDIF cable. Focusrite notes that a standard RCA cable may work, particularly over short runs, but purpose-made cable is the more reliable choice.
  • Analog stereo RCA: Use a red-and-white stereo RCA cable between analog output and analog input ports. It does not convert digital audio.

These are connection and reliability recommendations, not evidence that a more expensive cable inherently improves sound. Confirm whether the jacks are optical, digital coaxial, or analog before buying or connecting anything.
