Download any required model or language resources before disconnecting, and confirm that the app is actually processing audio locally rather than sending it to a cloud service.
What “offline transcription” depends on
“AI” does not tell you where audio is processed. An app may offer both local and cloud engines, or it may require an internet connection for a particular feature. Check the app’s chosen processing mode and any platform-specific Dictation settings; Apple advises checking whether Mac Dictation requires internet access. Local processing may still require an internet connection initially to download the app, model, or language resources. Set up and download what you need while online, then verify the feature works after disconnecting. Using an external microphone
An external microphone can work if the operating system detects it and the transcription feature uses it as its input. Some apps follow the system’s selected input; others expose a separate microphone selector. Check both places when available.

On a Mac
For Mac Dictation, open System Settings > Keyboard, find Dictation, and choose the microphone source. Apple’s instructions also cover selecting Dictation languages. Apple Support
On Windows 11
Open Settings > System > Sound > Input, connect or select the external microphone, and check its input level. If voice typing does not capture speech, Microsoft also recommends checking that microphone access is enabled and that the language is supported. Microsoft’s Windows voice-typing troubleshooting

In a transcription app
If the app has its own input control, select the external microphone there too. TypeWhisper documents microphone selection with a live preview. Speak a short test phrase and check that the preview or transcription responds before recording a longer session.
Choosing a language and engine
Language support is determined by the selected transcription engine, not simply by the app’s general “AI” label. Select the target language if the app offers manual selection; automatic detection is available in some products, but its presence does not establish equal performance for every language. Apple notes that Dictation language and feature availability varies.

Published language counts are capability claims, not accuracy measurements. Whisper Notes’ current App Store listing advertises offline local engines and support for over 100 languages. Whisper Notes on the App Store Audacity says its Whisper translation feature handles 99 source languages. A quick setup check before going offline
- Connect the external microphone and confirm the operating system lists it as an input device.
- Select it in the system sound or Dictation settings, then also select it inside the transcription app if that app has a separate control.
- Allow microphone access and check the input level by speaking a short sample.
- Choose a local processing engine and the target language, or confirm the app’s language detection option is appropriate.
- While online, download any required model or language resources. Disconnect and test a brief recording to confirm the complete workflow works offline.
What to check when transcription fails
- No audio is captured: Check that the microphone is connected, selected as the input in both system and app settings, permitted to access the microphone, and producing an adequate input level.
- The wrong language appears: Confirm the chosen engine supports the language and select it explicitly if possible. A product’s advertised language count does not guarantee equal accuracy for all languages.
- It stops working without internet: Check whether the selected engine is local, whether the feature requires internet, and whether model or language downloads were completed before disconnecting.
- Results are inconsistent: Try a short sample with the chosen microphone and language, and compare the output against the source audio. The cited product pages do not provide a controlled, comparable accuracy benchmark across microphones and languages, so there is no evidence here to name a microphone or language-accuracy winner.
