What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No—a dedicated graphics card is not a universal requirement. OBS can encode with your CPU using x264, or use a supported hardware encoder to reduce CPU workload. Whether your current computer can manage a 24/7 loop depends on its available graphics support, encoder, output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, upload connection, and ability to stay powered and stable. A GPU may help, but you should test the whole setup rather than buy one by default.
What “needs a GPU” means in OBS
OBS lists compatible graphics support among its system requirements, but that does not mean every OBS stream requires a separate, discrete graphics card. A computer may have integrated graphics, and OBS also supports CPU-based x264 software encoding. The distinction is between having graphics support OBS can use and needing a dedicated card for encoding.
OBS offers software encoding through x264 and hardware encoding options such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync when supported by the computer. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU work; availability and quality vary by hardware and generation, so no encoder is automatically best for every system. OBS says, “Modern hardware encoders provide very good quality video with minimal performance impact.” OBS Project: Hardware Encoding
What determines whether your PC can handle the loop?
OBS identifies the encoder, output resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors in CPU requirements. A simple scene showing a looping video is generally a lighter workload than one with multiple sources, filters, compositing, or other effects, but that is a workload-based expectation—not a published benchmark or guarantee for any particular PC. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Encoding path: Check whether your system offers x264 or a supported hardware encoder, and monitor performance with the encoder you intend to use.
- Output workload: Start with the resolution and frame rate you actually need. Higher output settings and more complex scenes can demand more from the computer.
- Graphics compatibility: Confirm OBS can use a compatible graphics adapter. Integrated graphics and a discrete graphics card are different arrangements.
- Upload continuity: Your connection must sustain the stream bitrate reliably, with headroom for variation.
- Recording: Decide whether you also need a local recording; a very long YouTube stream may not be archived automatically.
Set up OBS and YouTube, then test before relying on it
- Build the loop scene in OBS. Add the video source or sources needed for the loop, and keep the scene as simple as practical. Extra overlays, filters, and compositing add workload.
- Choose an encoder your computer supports. In OBS, open Settings > Output and select the available streaming encoder. Use x264 if you are encoding on the CPU; use a supported hardware option if available and appropriate. Compare actual performance on your machine rather than assuming an older hardware encoder will match a newer one.
- Set a realistic output resolution and frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video. Begin with a modest output if you are unsure how much capacity the PC has, then test the intended settings. The exact choice depends on the source, computer, and connection.
- Match YouTube’s encoding recommendations. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. For H.264, its recommended bitrates include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that your PC or ISP can sustain them. See YouTube live encoder settings.
- Check your upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Choose settings that your connection can sustain reliably, not only a bitrate reached during an ideal speed test. YouTube live streaming tips
- Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream key; enter that key in OBS under Settings > Stream. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Check YouTube’s live setup and policy requirements before going live.
- Run a private or otherwise non-public test first. Confirm the YouTube preview, audio and video, OBS statistics, and YouTube stream health. Watch for dropped frames or encoder overload, then reduce output demands or change encoder if necessary. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the feed; a successful short test does not guarantee uninterrupted operation for a day.
What 24/7 operation does—and does not—guarantee
OBS and YouTube documentation do not establish a universal PC configuration or guarantee indefinite OBS uptime. Continuous operation also depends on the computer remaining powered and cool, the operating system and OBS staying stable, and the network remaining available. A GPU cannot prevent power loss or internet disruption, and there is no single GPU recommendation that can be made responsibly without knowing the CPU, graphics adapter, operating system, scene, target output, and recording needs.
YouTube’s archive guidance is a separate issue from whether a stream can continue live: streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a copy, make a local recording rather than relying on the automatic archive. This is not a stated 12-hour cutoff for the live broadcast. YouTube: archive live streams

Common problems and what to check
- Encoder overloaded: Lower the output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or try another supported encoder. Check OBS statistics while reproducing the issue.
- High CPU use with x264: x264 uses the CPU for encoding. Reduce output demands or, if the computer supports one, test a hardware encoder to shift some work away from the CPU.
- Dropped frames or unstable stream health: Check upload stability and bitrate. Lower the bitrate or output demands until the connection has the headroom YouTube recommends.
- OBS cannot use the intended graphics adapter: Verify the operating system and OBS can access compatible graphics support, then confirm the encoder option is actually available in OBS.
- No automatic archive after a long broadcast: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Keep a local recording if preserving the stream matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer to stay on, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video or playlist as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
