The provider sends a detection signal to Teams, which can store detection information about a participant and surface it in the meeting. That distinction does not establish what a particular provider retains separately: check the provider’s privacy terms and your organization’s configuration.
What Teams deepfake detection does
Microsoft describes synthetic-media detection in Teams as an integration with certified third-party detection providers. A provider’s bot must be admitted to the call. It evaluates a participant’s audio or video stream for signs of synthetic or manipulated media, then reports its finding to Teams. Microsoft’s roadmap describes the providers as analyzing meeting media and sending detection signals to Teams; Teams handles the integration and presentation of those signals.

That is different from a feature in which Teams itself examines the meeting media locally to improve call quality. It is also different from recording: the cited Microsoft documentation describes media analysis, a finding, and detection information associated with a participant. It does not say the detector creates an audio or video recording.
In Microsoft Graph’s beta documentation, the reportSyntheticMedia action is intended for certified third-party audio and video synthetic-media detection bots admitted to a meeting call. The API says the detection information is stored on the participant and distributed through roster updates. In other words, the documented stored item is detection information, not a stated meeting-media file.

Does the detection workflow record the meeting?
Microsoft’s cited API and roadmap materials do not describe the detection workflow recording or retaining a meeting audio/video file. They describe analysis and a report sent to Teams. A detection signal or participant-level metadata should not be confused with a recording of the underlying meeting.
However, that documentation is not a universal promise about every provider’s handling of media. It does not establish whether a particular third party keeps data separately, what it might retain, or for how long. Those details depend on the provider’s own service and terms, and may also depend on how the organization configured or deployed it. Before relying on a no-retention assumption, review the provider’s privacy documentation and ask your Teams administrator what service is enabled.
Meeting recording controls are a separate matter. Microsoft Teams Premium materials list controls such as limiting who may record, as well as encryption and watermarking features. Such controls govern recording-related protections; they do not, by themselves, answer what an independently integrated detector processes or retains. Treat recording settings and third-party data handling as separate questions.

So, if your question is “Does synthetic-media analysis mean the meeting is recorded?”, the supported answer is no: the detection workflow is described as analysis plus a report, not as creation of a meeting recording. But that answer is limited to what Microsoft documents about the integration. It cannot rule out separate handling by the provider under its own service terms, or a recording made through a different Teams feature or organizational process.
Does Teams send meeting audio or video to a third party?
For the documented synthetic-media detection path, a certified third-party provider analyzes meeting media. The Graph action is intended for a detection bot admitted to the call, and the roadmap says providers analyze media for signs of manipulated audio or video. So this is not simply a local Teams quality enhancement followed by a result: the third-party detector is part of the analysis path.

The documentation describes the provider reporting a detection finding to Teams. Teams then stores detection information on the participant and distributes a roster update. It does not establish that Teams sends the full media stream onward to other recipients, nor does it specify every provider’s exact data flow, retention period, or storage location. Those are provider- and deployment-specific details to verify before enabling the service.
A Marketplace example is Sensity Deepfake Detection. Microsoft’s listing describes real-time audio/video deepfake detection in Teams and says an active Sensity account is required. It also says the app can send data over the Internet. Marketplace availability is not evidence that Microsoft endorses the provider or that its privacy terms match every other integration. Review the developer’s privacy policy and service terms before adoption.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen evaluating a provider, ask what media it analyzes, whether it processes audio, video, or both, what data it sends to Teams, and whether it retains media or derived information outside Teams. Ask how long any retained data remains and who can access it. The general integration description establishes that a third party analyzes meeting media and reports a signal; it does not supply a provider-by-provider retention schedule or answer every data-flow question.
How this differs from Teams’ built-in AI processing
Teams also uses AI for meeting audio and video functions that are separate from synthetic-media detection. Microsoft Support describes local Teams processing for tasks such as noise suppression, echo cancellation, speech enhancement, and camera effects. Transcription and captions are also covered when the user activates them. For the processing described on that support page, Microsoft states: “Your meeting’s audio and video data never leave Teams and aren’t stored anywhere, by anyone – not even Microsoft.”
Keep that statement within its stated scope. It refers to the Teams enhancements and features covered by the support article; it is not a blanket guarantee about a separately integrated third-party detector. The two pathways have different actors and purposes:

| Path | Who analyzes media | What the cited material says is returned or stored |
|---|---|---|
| Teams audio/video enhancements | Teams processes media locally for the described enhancement functions. | The support page says the media for those processes does not leave Teams or get stored. User-activated transcription and captions are included in its discussion. |
| Synthetic-media detection | A certified third-party provider’s bot, admitted to the meeting call, evaluates a participant’s stream. | The provider reports a detection finding; Teams stores detection information on the participant and sends it through roster updates. The cited materials do not specify provider-specific media retention. |
Teams sensitive-content detection is another distinct feature. It scans shared screen content for supported sensitive information, such as financial or identity numbers; it is not described as detecting synthetic faces or voices. Microsoft notes limitations involving unsupported sharing modes, language, and motion, and says end-to-end encryption is unavailable in meetings using that feature. Do not infer that a sensitive-content warning is a deepfake-detection result.
These distinctions matter when comparing options. Teams’ local enhancement processing serves audio and video quality or meeting features; the synthetic-media integration is meant to identify signs of manipulated media through an outside provider. Sensitive-content detection, in turn, concerns supported content shared on screen. Similar AI terminology does not mean that the features examine the same material, use the same service, or have identical privacy implications.
What an administrator needs to know
The Graph beta API documentation specifies the permission Calls.ReportSyntheticMedia.All, which must be granted by a tenant administrator. The detection bot must also be admitted to the call. These are meaningful prerequisites: the cited integration is not described as an automatic Teams-only check that every meeting participant receives regardless of tenant configuration.
- Permission: tenant administrator consent for
Calls.ReportSyntheticMedia.Allis required for the documented API action. - Call access: the certified bot must be admitted to the meeting call to evaluate the participant stream.
- Provider review: establish which provider is being used and read its privacy and retention terms before enabling it.
- Configuration: verify whether the service is enabled for the tenant and which meetings or participants it covers; Microsoft’s cited materials do not establish any particular organization’s configuration.
- Separate controls: review Teams recording, encryption, and watermarking settings independently. They do not substitute for reviewing the detector provider’s data handling.
For an employee or meeting participant, the practical next step is to ask the organization’s Teams administrator whether a detection provider is deployed, which provider it is, and how participants are informed. The documentation does not establish that every tenant has enabled the feature, or that a bot is present in every meeting. An administrator can confirm the organization’s configuration; the provider’s privacy notice can address its service-specific data practices.
The Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry RM573451 was published October 2, 2026, and last updated October 7, 2026. In that record, the feature was marked “In development,” with November 2026 general availability targeted. That is a roadmap target, not confirmation that the feature has launched or is available in a particular tenant. Check the current roadmap and your tenant’s service availability rather than treating the target month as a release guarantee.

The sources do not establish a price for the integration or for a specific provider. Sensity’s Marketplace listing requires an active Sensity account, but that requirement alone does not disclose the account’s price or terms. Organizations considering deployment should confirm provider licensing, implementation requirements, and any related costs directly with the provider rather than assuming the feature is included in a Teams plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the documentation does and does not establish
The available Microsoft materials establish the basic division of work: Teams has local AI processing for specified meeting enhancements, while the synthetic-media detection path uses a certified third party to analyze meeting media and report a signal. They also establish that Teams stores detection information on the participant and distributes roster updates.
They do not establish a detector accuracy rate, how often a false positive or missed detection occurs, or that detection prevents a particular proportion of fraud. No accuracy percentage should be inferred from the feature description. Nor do the cited materials establish how long every provider retains media, whether a specific organization has enabled a detector, or the release status after the roadmap’s October 7, 2026 update.
For a practical decision, separate four questions: Does a detector bot join the call? Which meeting media does that provider analyze? What finding or metadata does Teams receive? What, if anything, does the provider retain outside the Teams roster update? Microsoft’s API and roadmap answer the first three at a general level; the provider’s privacy notice and the organization’s configuration are needed to answer the last one for a particular deployment.

A detection signal is an indication produced by a detector, not a documented guarantee that manipulated media will always be identified or that fraud will be stopped. The reviewed product descriptions give no validated accuracy figure. Organizations should therefore avoid treating the feature as a substitute for their own verification procedures, such as confirming an unusual request through a trusted channel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft Teams deepfake detection record or analyze meeting audio and video?
The documented feature analyzes meeting media through a certified third-party provider and sends a detection finding to Teams. Microsoft’s cited API and roadmap materials describe analysis and detection metadata, not creation of a meeting recording.
Does synthetic-media analysis mean the meeting is recorded?
Not according to the documented detection workflow: it describes analysis, a report, and participant-level detection information. That does not establish whether a particular provider separately retains media under its own terms, so check that provider’s privacy documentation.
Does Teams send my meeting audio or video to a third party?
For the synthetic-media detection path, a certified third-party provider analyzes meeting media. Teams’ separate audio and video enhancement processing is described as local and should not be confused with that third-party analysis. The exact data flow and retention depend on the detector provider and configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
How can I tell whether my organization has enabled a detector?
Ask your Teams administrator which provider, if any, is deployed and which calls it covers. The cited documentation does not establish that every tenant has enabled the feature or that a detection bot joins every meeting.
What permission and access does the documented integration require?
Microsoft Graph’s beta reportSyntheticMedia action requires tenant administrator consent for Calls.ReportSyntheticMedia.All, and the certified detection bot must be admitted to the meeting call.
Is Teams deepfake detection available now, and what does it cost?
Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry RM573451 was marked “In development” in its October 7, 2026 update, with November 2026 general availability targeted. A target is not a release confirmation; check current availability with Microsoft and your administrator. The cited materials do not state a price. Sensity’s Marketplace listing requires an active account but does not establish its cost.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Teams’ documented synthetic-media feature analyzes meeting audio or video through a certified third-party provider and sends a detection signal to Teams, which stores participant-level detection information. Microsoft does not describe that workflow as recording the meeting, but it also does not make a blanket promise about a provider’s separate retention. Confirm tenant configuration, current availability, and the provider’s privacy and licensing terms.
