What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Usually, no—not by a predictable or meaningful amount. OBS output bitrate mainly determines how much data you send and how much visual quality you retain. Lowering it may help if your upload connection cannot sustain the stream, but it is not a reliable way to reduce a 24/7 PC’s electricity bill. To find out what a setting change does on your machine, measure its power draw at the wall.
Why bitrate usually does not cut the PC’s power bill
Bitrate is the stream’s data rate. It affects upload bandwidth and picture quality; it is not a direct control for how many hours the computer runs or a dependable measure of its electricity use. OBS’s guidance identifies output resolution and frame rate as direct factors in rendering and encoding performance. Its x264 guide describes bitrate as a bandwidth-and-quality trade-off, while encoder presets affect CPU use. Neither establishes a predictable electricity saving from lowering bitrate.

This is an inference from the published technical guidance, not a controlled power test: the sources reviewed do not provide a wattage comparison for the same PC streaming at different bitrates. A particular setup might show a small change, but there is no supported universal saving figure. A lower CPU or GPU utilization reading alone also does not prove lower wall power; total draw depends on the whole system and its workload.
How to estimate the electricity cost of a PC running 24/7
Measure the real stream
- Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the PC at the wall. Include the OBS scenes, sources, and encoder settings you actually use.
- Record average draw over a representative period. If comparing settings, change one at a time and keep scenes and activity as similar as possible; a longer interval helps smooth changes in scene complexity and PC activity.
- Convert the measured average watts to energy: average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours running = kWh.
- For an always-on 30-day month, calculate average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 for approximate monthly kWh. Multiply that result by your local electricity price per kWh to estimate the energy charge.
This gives an estimate, not a universal bill amount. Electricity rates, taxes, billing periods, and the PC’s draw vary. Published work has reported measuring average energy consumption and processor use in a streaming context, but it does not establish a universal PC wattage or bitrate-specific saving.

Which OBS settings are more relevant to workload?
Output resolution and frame rate
OBS says reducing output resolution can reduce GPU resource use and encoder load. Frame rate affects rendering and encoding performance; fewer frames mean less work. OBS suggests trying 30 fps instead of 60 fps when 60 fps is not working. Make that change only if the lower resolution or frame rate suits the content and the quality you want.
Encoder and preset
x264 uses the CPU, and its presets trade CPU usage against bitrate and bandwidth. NVIDIA describes NVENC as a dedicated hardware encoding section on supported GPUs. These differences can affect where encoding work happens, but the cited guidance does not establish that either encoder or a particular preset reduces total system power on every PC. Measure the complete machine rather than assuming an encoder choice will lower the bill.

Scenes, sources, and other activity
OBS identifies GPU contention, complex scenes, media or browser sources, and filters as potential resource loads. For an unattended stream, inspect the whole workload—including tasks running alongside OBS—rather than treating bitrate as the only setting that matters.

These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not power thresholds. YouTube also transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. OBS advises reducing bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the configured rate; dynamic bitrate can help maintain a connection by reducing quality. But a bitrate that is too low can make the picture look worse, and motion and resolution affect how much bitrate is needed for acceptable quality. Use the recommendation for your codec and output as a reference, then account for your content and upload connection.

When changing bitrate makes sense
- Your upload connection is unstable: Lowering bitrate may help OBS stay within available upload capacity, at the cost of picture quality.
- You want to reduce electricity use: Do not assume a bitrate change will do it. Measure wall power before and after under comparable streaming conditions.
- Encoding or rendering is struggling: Check resolution, frame rate, encoder and preset, GPU contention, scenes, sources, filters, and other running tasks. Change one variable at a time, then verify both stream quality and wall power.
Or let it run in the cloud
