LocalStack reproduces many AWS behaviors closely enough for local development and integration testing, but it does not guarantee exact parity for every service, API operation, feature, or deployment mode. Compatibility depends on the specific workflow and LocalStack release. Use local tests for fast feedback, then verify critical production behavior in AWS when a mismatch could matter.
Is LocalStack the same as AWS?
No. LocalStack is an AWS-compatible local development environment, not a promise that every AWS service and edge case behaves identically. A service appearing in a LocalStack plan table does not establish that every API or feature is covered; LocalStack explicitly says its service listing does not indicate API coverage or feature availability (coverage documentation).
Compatibility is best understood at the level of the exact operation and behavior your application relies on. A successful test of one API call is not proof of parity for authorization, error handling, resource lifecycle, persistence, event delivery, or interactions among services.
Can I trust LocalStack tests?
LocalStack tests are useful evidence that your code works against the behavior LocalStack implements. They are not, on their own, proof that the same workflow will behave identically in AWS. LocalStack’s IAM documentation notes that not all operations have been tested and identifies specific operations for which allow/deny behavior has been tested (IAM documentation).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For ordinary development, local tests can catch regressions quickly and make integration workflows easier to run. For behavior where cloud-specific semantics or production configuration are important, keep a smaller validation suite in AWS. This is a practical safeguard based on the documented coverage limits, not a guarantee from LocalStack that any particular test strategy is sufficient.
What affects LocalStack compatibility?
Service, API operation, and feature
Coverage varies within a service. Check the service-specific documentation, feature coverage, and known limitations for the exact API operations, resource types, and semantics your application uses. Do not infer full support from a service name in a plan or availability list (coverage documentation).

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Deployment mode
Behavior can differ by deployment mode, so results from Docker should not be treated as evidence about Kubernetes, or vice versa. LocalStack’s Kubernetes documentation identifies unsupported services and partial features for that environment. Its listed Kubernetes limitations include Bedrock, EKS, SageMaker, and CodeBuild as requiring Docker and being unsupported in that environment; it also describes restrictions affecting SSM, ECS, EC2, RDS, and Neptune (Kubernetes deployment documentation; Kubernetes limitations).
LocalStack release
Compatibility changes as LocalStack adds features and fixes service-specific behavior. A useful compatibility claim therefore identifies the LocalStack release and the workflow tested, rather than saying simply that “LocalStack supports” a service. The official changelog records targeted changes in areas such as IAM enforcement, RDS resource handling, and ECS target lifecycle (LocalStack changelog).

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Examples of documented differences and parity work
Kubernetes-specific limitations
LocalStack warns that user data scripts may not behave identically to AWS and says full parity is not guaranteed in its Kubernetes documentation. The limitations page also lists SSM exec into EC2 instances as unsupported, along with ECS FireLens, volumes, task port exposure, and repository credentials. It does not claim full parity for EC2 user data (Kubernetes deployment documentation; Kubernetes limitations). These are limitations documented for the Kubernetes environment described there, not a blanket statement about every LocalStack deployment.
Version-specific SQS behavior
LocalStack’s 2026.06.0 release notes describe SQS event-source mapping changes: five default pollers for standard queues and one for FIFO queues, plus validation and storage for ProvisionedPollerConfig. The same release notes say dynamic scaling between configured bounds was not implemented in that release (2026.06.0 release notes). These details illustrate why version and feature boundaries matter; they should not be generalized to other releases.

How to assess LocalStack for your application
- List dependencies: Identify the AWS services, API operations, resource types, and behaviors your workflow uses.
- Record the environment: Note the exact LocalStack release and deployment mode, such as Docker or Kubernetes.
- Check specific coverage: Read the relevant service documentation and known limitations; a service listing is not a complete API-coverage matrix.
- Test meaningful failure modes: Where applicable, include authorization decisions, validation errors, resource creation and deletion, persistence, event delivery, and cross-service interactions.
- Validate high-impact behavior in AWS: Run a targeted check against AWS for semantics or production configuration where a mismatch would be costly.
Do LocalStack plans guarantee AWS parity?
No. A plan’s service list is not a statement that every API or feature for those services is available or behaves exactly as AWS does. As of March 23, 2026, LocalStack’s plans documentation listed Base, Ultimate, and Enterprise commercial subscriptions, plus a Hobby non-commercial subscription; it also cautioned that the service table does not indicate API coverage or feature availability (plans documentation). Check the current documentation for plan details and installation or access requirements, which can change.

What should a compatibility claim include?
- The AWS service, operation, resource type, and behavior under discussion.
- The LocalStack release and deployment mode used.
- The tested cases and important untested cases, especially around errors, permissions, lifecycle, persistence, and event handling.
- Whether the relevant workflow was also validated in AWS.
