Yes. A Linode Compute instance sending a continuous stream to YouTube generates outbound network transfer, which counts against the applicable monthly transfer allowance. If the account exceeds that allowance, overage charges may apply. Linode’s current policy lists region-dependent overage rates from $0.005 to $0.015 per GB; check the current allowance and rate for your account’s data-center region before estimating a bill.
What Linode counts as outbound transfer
When a server pushes video to YouTube, data travels out from Linode. Linode’s Network Transfer Usage and Costs policy classifies metered transfer as outbound transfer sent from Compute Instances and NodeBalancers to destinations outside the origin data center, over IPv4 and IPv6. YouTube is an external destination, so the stream’s outgoing data is relevant to the transfer allowance.

This is a data-volume billing question, not a network-speed question. An advertised network speed describes how quickly data can move; transfer usage accumulates according to how much data the instance sends over time.

Estimate the stream’s monthly transfer
For a steady bitrate, a useful decimal estimate for 30 days is:
#1 Best Overall
Average bitrate in Mbps × 324 ≈ GB transferred in 30 days
| Average sustained bitrate | Approximate transfer in 30 days |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 324 GB |
| 2 Mbps | 648 GB |
| 4 Mbps | 1,296 GB, or about 1.3 TB |
These figures are arithmetic estimates based on a constant bitrate, not measurements of Linode or YouTube usage. Actual transfer can be higher because of bitrate variation, protocol overhead, reconnects, and other outbound traffic. Use the stream’s sustained average bitrate rather than its peak or the server’s network-speed specification.

Check the allowance and regional overage rate
Linode’s surfaced policy lists these overage rates for transfer beyond the applicable monthly allotment: $0.005 per GB in most listed data centers, $0.007 per GB in São Paulo, and $0.015 per GB in Jakarta. These are source-reported rates, not a guaranteed quote: data-center coverage and prices can change, and the specific plan and region determine what applies. Consult the current pricing information and your Cloud Manager account for the exact included transfer and current account usage.
Transfer allowances may be pooled across services, according to Linode staff explanations. That means other active services can use part of the account’s available transfer; do not assume an instance’s standalone allowance is all the headroom available or that the whole pool is unused. Check the account’s transfer pool and consumption in Cloud Manager.

What happens if you exceed the allowance?
Linode staff guidance says excess transfer is billed and the allowance is not a hard limit that automatically stops outbound traffic. A stream therefore may continue while extra charges accrue. Monitor usage during the billing period and compare the projected stream total with the account’s remaining pool, including transfer from other services.
Plan the stream without relying on old estimates
- Use the current allowance and usage shown for your own account and data-center region; plan details and regional rates can differ.
- Calculate the 30-day stream estimate from its average bitrate, then allow headroom for variation, reconnects, overhead, and other outbound traffic.
- Recheck Linode’s current transfer policy and account usage before relying on a price estimate. Older community replies quote different per-GB rates; they are historical and should not override the current policy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream without keeping a Linode instance configured and running, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card, and Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera streaming. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
