The reports concern AT&T customers, not a confirmed general failure affecting every iPhone 18 Pro Max or every carrier. Some accounts also mention eSIM provisioning, but that does not establish eSIM as the cause.
What AT&T says iOS 27.0.1 does
AT&T told customers to update to the latest available software. Its spokesperson said Apple had released an update to address an issue that may affect calls, data, texts, and 911 calls on a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max phones. Apple’s iOS 27.0.1 release notes list three fixes: unexpected Face ID-related restarts on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, a color artifact in 2x photos on a small number of those phones, and touchscreen unresponsiveness when Notification Center and Control Center are opened together. They do not list an AT&T cellular repair.

MacRumors estimated that at least thousands of users were discussing the issue, based on discussion threads. That is not an AT&T-confirmed device count. The available reporting does not provide a verified number of affected phones, a denominator, or a prevalence percentage.

The cause has not been confirmed. MacRumors notes that the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone in that launch using a Qualcomm modem, while the iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple’s C2 modem. The modem difference is a possible factor, not evidence that the modem is faulty or the explanation for AT&T’s reports.
