Possibly—but Quick Sync does not guarantee a lower electricity bill for a nonstop YouTube stream. It moves video encoding from the CPU to Intel’s dedicated media hardware, which may reduce encoding power on some systems. What matters to your bill, however, is the whole PC’s wall power over time. The available wattage comparison is an older transcoding benchmark, not a current 24/7 YouTube test, so measure your own setup before estimating savings.
What Quick Sync changes—and what it does not
Intel Quick Sync Video uses the processor’s media engine for hardware video encoding. OBS describes hardware encoding as moving work off the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU, and generally recommends it for performance. That explains where the encoding work runs; it does not establish that the complete computer will draw fewer watts in every configuration.

Intel says the media engine handles hardware encode, decode, and processing. Its oneAPI GPU Optimization Guide, version 2025.0, notes that fixed-function work can be very low power when configured to use low-power pathways. Actual availability and behavior depend on the processor generation and system configuration. Intel’s Media Engine Hardware guide describes the hardware; it is not a measurement of your PC’s streaming power.
What the published wattage comparison tells you
Intel’s September 2015 presentation reported 48.4 W for software encoding and 24.74 W for Quick Sync encoding, with frame rates of 60 fps and 280 fps respectively. Those were Intel internal measurements using CyberLink Media Espresso 6.7.3521 in Fast Conversion Mode, a demo clip, an Intel Core i7-4900MQ reference system, and Windows 7. This is historical, task-specific transcoding evidence—not a controlled comparison of current PCs running a nonstop YouTube stream. It does not show that Quick Sync halves total PC power or predicts a particular electricity-bill reduction. See Intel’s 2015 transcoding presentation.

No directly comparable current whole-PC wattage test for a nonstop YouTube stream is established here. Idle power, scene rendering, capture, displays, network hardware, stream settings, and local electricity rates all affect the result. Without measured watts, streaming hours, and your electricity rate, an annual dollar saving would be speculation.
Check whether Quick Sync is available
OBS guidance lists Quick Sync support on Windows and Linux, with Intel HD Graphics on Core i-series processors from the 2xxx generation onward; it recommends Core i-series 4xxx or newer because early Quick Sync versions had lower quality. Confirm support for your exact processor and current OBS version rather than relying on the family name alone. OBS also advises using the hardware encoder on the primary graphics adapter when a discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPU is installed. See OBS Project’s Hardware Encoding guidance.

Processor graphics may need to remain enabled. Intel warns that on some systems with a separate GPU, disabling the iGPU can also disable Quick Sync; Intel states the feature is available only if processor graphics are enabled. Check your firmware and system configuration if Quick Sync is missing from the encoder list. Intel Support explains the separate-GPU case.

A plug-in electricity monitor can compare wall draw for the complete PC. It cannot isolate the encoder’s own contribution, but whole-system power is the relevant quantity for estimating the electricity used by the streaming setup.

- Confirm the encoder: In OBS, check the output encoder selection and verify that Quick Sync is actually available and selected. If it is absent, check processor graphics enablement, your processor’s support, and current drivers and OBS guidance.
- Hold the workload constant: Compare Quick Sync with software encoding on the same PC, scene, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and stream duration. Avoid changing other background workloads between runs.
- Measure at the wall: Record watts or energy in kWh from the plug-in monitor over each test. Allow readings to settle, and use comparable test periods; a brief reading may not represent a full stream.
- Check the stream as well as the meter: Note dropped frames, stability, and output quality. A lower power reading is not useful if the stream becomes unreliable or its quality changes materially.
- Estimate cost from your own figures: For energy in kWh, multiply by your electricity rate per kWh. For a steady average draw in watts, estimate kWh as watts × hours ÷ 1,000, then apply that rate. Use the measured whole-PC difference between matched runs, not Intel’s historical transcoding figures.
