The source, monitor, chosen resolution and timing, and any adapter or cable must all support the mode. Check the specifications for both devices before connecting; for high-refresh gaming, use a port combination whose manufacturers explicitly list your target resolution at 144Hz.
What “HDMI-to-DVI-D” means
HDMI and DVI-D are distinct digital video interfaces. “HDMI-to-DVI-D” usually means connecting an HDMI output on a computer or console to a DVI-D input on a monitor, sometimes through a cable or adapter. The direction matters: check that the product is intended for your source-to-display connection, as well as matching the connector types.

A digital connection may produce a picture without supporting the refresh rate you want. The connector name alone does not establish a particular resolution-and-refresh combination.
Why the answer depends on your setup
The HDMI output
HDMI specifications describe possible formats, not a promise that every port on a product supports every format. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s HDMI 1.4b overview lists 1920×1080 at 120Hz. Its HDMI 2.2 overview describes higher rates for some formats. Neither figure confirms that a particular computer’s HDMI output supports 1080p at 144Hz, or that an HDMI-to-DVI-D connection will carry it. Check the exact device documentation.

- IN THE BOX: (1) 6-foot HDMI to DVI cable adapts an HDMI (input) to a DVI (output)
- DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Works with all HDMI or DVI-D 24+1 equipped devices, also compatible with DVI-I 24+5 equipped devices It cannot support 4K/60 Hz(UHD)
- EASY CONNECTION: Bi-directional cable connects HDMI-equipped devices or connects DVI-equipped devices to HDMI-enabled devices
- DURABLE DESIGN: Gold-plated connectors deliver optimal conductivity; net jacket offers an extra layer of protection
The DVI-D input and signal timing
DVI has its own signal limits. VESA’s discussion of Dual-Mode DisplayPort adapters identifies a 165MHz maximum DVI TMDS clock rate in that context. That figure is useful background, but it is not by itself a universal 144Hz cutoff: the complete timing, link configuration, and device support matter. Look up the monitor’s supported modes and whether its DVI-D input is single-link or dual-link where relevant. The VESA article also describes a 300MHz configuration for a newer Type 2 Dual-Mode DisplayPort adapter; that applies to the specified DisplayPort-source adapter context, not to generic HDMI-to-DVI-D cables or DVI ports. VESA’s adapter-standard explanation
The cable or adapter
A cable or adapter can solve a connector mismatch; it cannot add support for a mode that the source or monitor does not provide. Confirm the product’s direction, connectors, and documented resolution and refresh-rate support. Do not assume that a generic HDMI-to-DVI-D cable enables 144Hz.

- Bi-directional DVI-HDMI adapter m/f is a great video accessory between HDMI and DVI device (as DVI to HDMI adapter for monitor, or HDMI to DVI adapter for monitor)
- Compact DVI-D to HDMI adapter supports high resolutions up to 4k@30Hz, 1920x1200 and 1080p Full HD (can’t handle144Hz); audio must be transmitted separately (DVI-D does not natively support audio, not support analog signal)
- HDMI converter used as DVI source to HDMI monitor adapter (DVI computer to HDMI monitor), also as HDMI source to DVI monitor (HDMI computer to DVI monitor); compatible with DVI video card, game console PS3/PS4, TV, projector, laptop, cable box
- 4k monitor adapter to HDMI DVI features gold plated connectors to resist corrosion and increase durability; dvi male to hdmi female adapter fit in both Female DVI-I (24+5) and Female DVI-D (24+1)
- Small DVI to hdmi connector conversion coupler with grip treads and screws makes an easy hook-up and a secure dvi-hdmi adapters connection; HDMI cable or DVI cable is required (sold separately)
How to check whether your connection can run at 144Hz
- Identify the exact source and display ports. Confirm that the source is outputting HDMI and the monitor is receiving DVI-D, or identify any adapter and its intended direction.
- Check the source’s specifications. Find the supported HDMI output modes for the exact GPU or computer model, including the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use.
- Check the monitor’s specifications. Find the modes supported by the specific DVI-D input—not just the monitor’s maximum refresh rate over another input.
- Check the connection path. Verify any stated limits for the cable or adapter and note whether the DVI-D connection is single-link or dual-link where the device documentation makes that distinction.
- Confirm the complete mode. Check the resolution, refresh rate, timing or pixel-clock information, and color depth where published. If adaptive or variable refresh rate matters for gaming, confirm support across this exact connection too.
HDMI Licensing Administrator directs users to device documentation or the manufacturer for specific product support. If the source and monitor specifications do not explicitly establish the target mode over this connection, treat 144Hz as unconfirmed.
What to try if a 144Hz monitor is stuck at 60Hz
- Verify that the computer is connected to the input documented for the desired refresh rate; a monitor may support different modes on different inputs.
- Check the operating system’s display settings and select 144Hz if it is offered for the active display and resolution.
- Compare the selected resolution and refresh rate with the source, monitor, and adapter specifications. A mode available over one input may not be available over HDMI-to-DVI-D.
- Try a different port combination only if both device manufacturers document support for the desired mode through it. Replacing a cable alone will not overcome a source or display limitation.
Would DisplayPort be a better option?
If both the computer and monitor have DisplayPort, it may be a practical alternative when their specifications explicitly support your target resolution and 144Hz. VESA lists two 4K displays at 144Hz among its DisplayPort 2.x example configurations and notes that simple adapters can connect DisplayPort devices to legacy display types. These are examples of capability, not a guarantee for every GPU, monitor, or adapter. Check the exact port and mode specifications for both ends. VESA’s DisplayPort overview
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Bi-Directional HDMI to DVI cable: Connect source devices with an HDMI interface (such as Laptop, Desktops, Blu-ray Player, Xbox, PS3, PS4, Wii, etc.) to DVI equipped HDTV, Monitor,Projector; or connect a DVI equipped source device to a display device that supports HDMI. Kindly note: Please select the correct signal source: DVI signal source or HDMI signal source. If you select an incorrect signal source, it will cause the cable not to work or the monitor not to display any image
- Support Multitasking : For example, allow you to play games on your computer and watch movie on TV at the same time
- High Performance: 24K gold-plated full metal connector is corrosion-resistant, aluminum foil and braid double-shielded structure are anti-interference,oxygen-free copper wire core ensures optimal signal transmission
