Not necessarily. Hardware encoding can move video-encoding work off the CPU, but that alone does not prove your whole computer will use less electricity or lower your bill. The result depends on the complete system, stream settings, and other work happening at the same time. There is no dependable universal wattage or percentage saving for an always-on YouTube stream.
What hardware encoding changes
An encoder turns video into a format suitable for streaming. With hardware encoding, a dedicated media engine handles that encoding work instead of relying on the CPU to do it in software. YouTube describes NVIDIA NVENC as hardware-based encoding that can encode without using the CPU for that task (YouTube’s encoder guide). OBS likewise describes hardware encoders as shifting work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component and lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync as examples (OBS hardware encoding).

That is a statement about where the encoding work happens—not a guarantee about total electricity use. NVIDIA says that with encoding offloaded to NVENC, graphics/CUDA cores and CPU cores are free for other operations (NVENC Application Note, Video Codec SDK 13.1). It does not establish that a complete streaming computer draws fewer watts.

Why CPU savings do not automatically mean a lower bill
Your electricity cost depends on energy used by the whole system over time. A hardware encoder may reduce CPU work while a discrete GPU remains powered and other components continue to run. Rendering, capture, scaling, compositing, storage, networking, a game, and background tasks also affect system demand. OBS notes that resource requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS system requirements).

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
The result can differ between computers. An existing integrated media engine has different economics from a setup that needs a new discrete GPU. A lower CPU utilization reading—or activity shown for a dedicated encoder—does not tell you how much electricity the entire computer uses at the wall.
Measure your own streaming setup
For a useful comparison, measure whole-system energy during comparable, steady-state streaming sessions. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help measure power at the wall; it is a measurement aid, not proof that one encoder will save energy on every computer.

- Choose the two configurations. Compare software encoding with the hardware encoder available on your system. Record the encoder and relevant settings for each run.
- Match the stream. Keep codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate or quality target, test video, OBS scene, and audio comparable. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec and output resolution/frame rate, so changing them can confound the comparison.
- Keep other work consistent. Use the same capture and rendering workload, display setup, and background tasks as far as practical. Let each run reach steady operation before recording energy and duration.
- Check the actual broadcast. Use YouTube’s preview and stream-health tools, and monitor stream quality during each run. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and continuously monitoring quality (encoder settings and bitrates; streaming tips).
- Compare energy per hour. Divide measured energy by the session duration. If readings fluctuate, repeat the runs. Apply your own electricity rate to the measured difference and the number of hours you expect to stream.
Do not substitute CPU or GPU utilization percentages for wall-energy measurements. The study Towards Bridging the Energy-Performance Gap in Game Streaming reports measurements from its own game-streaming experiment; its results are not a direct measurement of continuous YouTube streaming and should not be applied as a general saving estimate.
Check YouTube settings without confusing them with power data
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingestion over RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrate for 1080p60 is 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264 (YouTube’s live encoder settings, accessed 2026). These are platform ingestion recommendations, not measurements of computer power. Check YouTube’s guidance again when configuring a stream, since platform requirements can change.

For an encoder comparison, hold the intended output constant and confirm the stream remains healthy. A lower bitrate, different resolution, or different frame rate may change system workload, but it also changes the comparison; it cannot isolate the effect of choosing a hardware encoder.
Should you buy hardware to reduce streaming electricity costs?
Not on the assumption that hardware encoding must lower the bill. If a comparison involves buying a GPU or standalone encoder, account for its purchase cost and its incremental power draw both while idle and while streaming, as well as what equipment you already own. The available guidance does not establish that a purchase will pay for itself through electricity savings. Measure your own setup and compare the expected energy-cost difference with the cost of the equipment before deciding.
