A GTX card may support the DirectX 12 API, but that does not mean it supports every DirectX 12 Ultimate feature. NVIDIA identifies GeForce RTX—not GTX—as its platform for the complete feature set. The answer for an individual GTX card depends on its model and the capabilities its hardware reports.
What DirectX 12 Ultimate support means
DirectX 12 is an API: a set of interfaces games use to communicate with graphics hardware. DirectX 12 Ultimate groups four advanced graphics capabilities:

- DirectX Raytracing (DXR): supports effects such as realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows.
- Mesh shaders: give the GPU more control over geometry processing and detail.
- Variable rate shading (VRS): varies shading work across parts of a scene.
- Sampler feedback: helps games manage texture streaming and texture-space shading.
A card can support DirectX 12 without implementing all four capabilities. Microsoft explains that support depends on the hardware and that applications should query the actual graphics adapter for optional capabilities. A DirectX version or feature-level label alone is not proof of support for every Ultimate feature—or a measure of performance. Microsoft’s hardware feature-level documentation explains the distinction.
Why GTX driver support can be mistaken for Ultimate support
NVIDIA’s Studio Driver 451.48 release notes, dated June 24, 2020, described the driver as providing “full support for the new DirectX 12 Ultimate graphics API” and listed GTX 10-series and GTX 16-series products among supported cards. That establishes driver support for those products; it does not establish that every listed GPU has the hardware capabilities required for the complete Ultimate feature set. NVIDIA’s 451.48 release notes are the source for that driver statement and product list.

NVIDIA’s feature page makes the distinction clear: it identifies GeForce RTX as its platform for the full set and says, “GeForce RTX is the first and only PC platform with support for these game-changing features.” That is NVIDIA’s own vendor statement, not an independent certification. NVIDIA also says specialized RT cores are found only on GeForce RTX graphics cards. NVIDIA’s DirectX 12 Ultimate overview describes the platform and feature set.
How to check your specific GTX card
- Identify the exact GPU model. Use Windows Task Manager’s Performance tab, a system-information utility, or the model name shown in the game or graphics driver. “GTX” by itself is not specific enough to determine capability.
- Install a current driver available for that model. A driver update can provide API and software support, but cannot add missing hardware features.
- Check the reported capabilities. Use a Direct3D capability query or a reliable utility that reports the adapter’s individual feature support, including DXR, mesh shaders, VRS, and sampler feedback. Microsoft documents capability queries and separate feature structures and tiers in its hardware feature-level guidance and Direct3D 12 feature-support documentation.
- Check the game’s requirements and settings. A game may require only some of these features, and its published requirements are more useful than a general DirectX label for deciding whether it will run on your card.
Do not assume that a reported feature level guarantees a particular frame rate. Microsoft describes feature levels as functionality, not performance. Resolution, graphics settings, the game, and the rest of the system all affect how well a card runs it.

Should you upgrade from GTX?
Upgrade if a game or application you want to use requires Ultimate capabilities your specific card does not report, or if its performance is inadequate for your needs. GeForce RTX is the relevant NVIDIA product family to consider for the complete feature set, but “RTX” alone is not a complete buying checklist: verify the exact GPU’s feature support, the game’s requirements, performance at your resolution and settings, power supply, and case clearance.
