Google Search may show an unusual-traffic warning or block traffic from a VPN network when it appears automated, or when Google says it cannot distinguish abusive requests from ordinary ones. Separately, Google documents a VPN service for eligible Google Fi phones. Those are different things: Search anti-abuse checks are not evidence of a blanket ban on VPN use.
Why Google Search may flag a VPN connection
Google Search Help says a network, including a VPN network, may trigger an “Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network” message when it seems to be sending automated traffic. Google says the message most likely includes a reCAPTCHA check. Google’s Search Help page describes this as a response to traffic from a network—not a general rule against VPNs.

A VPN can route many users’ requests through the same public IP address. If Google sees activity from that network that resembles automated requests, it may apply a check. Google also says some VPNs and tunnel services cause all traffic to be blocked because they make it impossible for Google to tell abusive traffic from non-abusive traffic. The wording matters: Google refers to some services and networks, not every VPN.

- Complete the reCAPTCHA if Google presents one. Google says the unusual-traffic message most likely shows a reCAPTCHA. Follow the on-screen check, then try Search again.
- Consider whether the network is shared. A VPN exit address may be used by multiple people, so activity attributed to that address may prompt a check even if your own searches are manual. Google’s help page explains the network-level trigger but does not identify which users or requests caused a particular warning.
- If the warning continues, test the connection without the VPN. This can help establish whether the VPN network is involved; it does not guarantee that changing networks will resolve the issue. Google provides no provider-specific assurance that a particular server or VPN will avoid checks.
Google’s documentation does not establish that a warning means your Google account has been penalized or that VPN use is prohibited. It describes an automated-traffic check applied to network traffic.

Does Google itself offer a VPN?
Google Fi documents “VPN by Google” as a feature for Fi phones. According to Google Fi’s help page, it encrypts traffic between a phone and Google’s VPN servers, and replaces the user’s IP address with a Google server IP. Fi says the feature works over cellular and Wi-Fi, and that VPN use can increase data usage.
This is a Google Fi service, not a statement that all Google products or Google accounts use a VPN. Google Fi’s June 2026 travel announcement says availability depends on the device, operating system, and selected countries, and notes expansion to destinations including South Korea and Japan. Check the current Fi help information for eligibility instead of relying on a fixed country list.

What Google Fi’s VPN does not cover
Google Fi lists several exclusions. Its VPN does not cover local-network traffic, tethered devices, activity while the phone is in airplane mode, some system-privileged apps, or secondary Android profiles. Fi also says custom DNS is unsupported. These limits mean the service should not be treated as a tunnel for every connection originating from or associated with a phone.

- It does not make a Google account anonymous or prevent websites from recognizing a user through cookies. Google Fi notes that cookies can still personalize website experiences.
- It does not guarantee that Search will skip anti-abuse checks. A Google VPN connection can still be subject to checks based on the traffic Google sees.
- It does not cover every app, device, or type of network traffic; the exclusions above apply.
What Google says it retains
Google Fi says it does not retain users’ online activity. It says it retains certain VPN traffic metadata, such as connection speed, for 14 days without the user’s IP address. Fi also describes a one-time token that is separated from the VPN servers. These are Google’s descriptions of its own service and data handling, not conclusions from an independent audit. What happened to Google One VPN?
In a March 8, 2023 announcement, Google said VPN by Google One was expanding to all Google One plans in 22 countries, with access on Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. That figure describes the expansion announced at that time; it is not a current coverage count. Google’s announcement is useful historical context, but the official sources cited here do not establish the current availability of a Google One VPN or a discontinuation date.

Google’s published Search guidance is about detecting traffic that appears automated and limiting traffic from some networks when abuse cannot be distinguished from normal use. Its Google Fi documentation separately describes a VPN feature with defined eligibility, coverage limits, and stated data practices. Taken together, these sources support a precise answer: Google is not documented as being categorically against VPNs, but VPN traffic can encounter Search checks or blocks depending on the network and traffic.
