That does not mean every Google location feature is off: Gemini Apps Activity, Maps Timeline, device permissions, and Gemini in Maps Navigation have separate behavior and controls.
What “Gemini Maps tracking” can mean
There is no single setting called “Gemini Maps tracking.” The answer depends on which feature is involved and where information may be stored.

These distinctions come from Google’s [Gemini Apps location guidance], [Gemini and Google Maps information], [Maps Timeline guidance], and [Maps AI privacy information]. The visible settings and availability can vary by platform, account type, region, and rollout.
What location information can Gemini use?
General area by default
Google says Gemini Apps can use a general area based on your IP address or the Home and Work addresses in your Google Account. This can help answer a request such as “Where is the closest coffee shop to me?”

Precise location when available
With permission, Gemini may process precise device or browser location to make an answer more relevant. Google’s Privacy Hub states: “Precise location that is processed with your permission from your device or browser is not stored in your Gemini Apps Activity.” The Gemini Apps Privacy Notice displayed in that hub is dated June 29, 2026.
Google says processed location is coarsened before it is stored with Gemini Apps Activity. It describes a general area as larger than 3 square kilometers and having at least 1,000 users. That is Google’s description of its processing approach, not an independently measured privacy guarantee. A location can also be retained as ordinary chat content if you or Gemini mention it in a prompt or response.

Location from another Google service
Gemini may receive precise location from another Google service, such as Google Maps, even if the Google app’s precise-location setting is off. As a result, switching off one app permission does not necessarily block every location-related input to Gemini.
Does Gemini save location history?
Gemini place search and directions
Google’s Gemini Help page says the connection that uses public Google Maps information to find places, show place details, and provide directions cannot save location history. Google also says this connection cannot use saved places other than Home or Work, or provide live traffic updates.

Gemini in Maps Navigation
This is a distinct feature from asking Gemini to find a place or give directions. Google’s Maps AI page says Gemini in Navigation may store location, so the no-location-history statement for Gemini’s place-and-directions connection should not be applied to every Gemini feature inside Maps.
Maps Timeline
Timeline is a separate, opt-in Google Account setting. Google says it is off by default. If enabled, it regularly saves precise device location to Timeline on each device, including when Google apps are not being used.

How to review or change the relevant controls
- Check Gemini’s access to location. In the Gemini web app, Google says to check the location indicator in the menu. On a phone or other supported device, review the device’s app permissions for Gemini. Google provides guidance for web, Android, iOS, Watch, Chrome, and Google Built-In; labels can differ by surface.
- Review Gemini Apps Activity. When signed in, open Gemini activity in My Activity to review or delete activity, or turn off Keep Activity. For work or school accounts, an administrator may control whether settings can be changed.
- Review Maps Timeline separately. Open Google Maps’ Timeline setting and check whether it is enabled. Turning off Gemini Keep Activity does not turn off Timeline.
- Check Maps and Search privacy settings. Google says a privacy-settings update is rolling out gradually, so the controls shown on an account may not match its published Maps AI guidance. Where the new settings do not match, Google says Web & App Activity continues to control relevant Search history and personalized recommendations.
What turning off activity does—and does not do
Turning off Keep Activity or deleting Gemini Apps Activity is not a universal deletion switch. Google says those actions do not delete data held in other Google services, such as Maps Timeline. Google also says activity previously reviewed by service providers may be retained for up to three years, disconnected from the account.

- Gemini can use a general area and, with permission or through another Google service, precise location to answer location-sensitive requests.
- Google says precise location processed with permission is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity; a coarsened area may be stored when Keep Activity is on.
- Gemini’s Maps place-and-directions connection cannot save location history, according to Google, but Gemini in Navigation is a separate feature that may store location.
- Timeline is independent of Gemini activity and saves precise device location when enabled.
