Gemini for TV does not require a camera. A microphone is only needed for hands-free voice listening. You can still ask for voice help by pressing the microphone button on a compatible remote. To stop hands-free listening, go to Settings → Accounts and profiles → Your account → Voice assistant → Hands-free mic and turn it off. To stop Gemini for TV on the device entirely, Google’s documented method is to remove the TV from Google Home; the TV then uses Google Assistant.
A microphone mute and turning Gemini off are different controls. Muting prevents the hardware from listening, while removing the TV from Google Home changes which voice assistant the TV uses. A camera is a separate smart-home accessory feature, not a Gemini for TV requirement.

What Gemini for TV actually needs
A camera is not required
Google’s Gemini for TV requirements do not list a camera or webcam. You do not need to connect, install or uncover a camera to use Gemini for TV. Google TV can control compatible cameras and other smart-home devices from the Google TV home panel, but that is a separate connected-device function. The camera is something the TV may control; it is not the hardware Gemini needs for ordinary voice requests. See Google’s instructions for controlling smart-home devices on Google TV.
The microphone has two different roles
There are two ways to send a voice request:
- Remote-button requests: you press and hold or press the microphone button on the voice remote, then speak. This is an intentional, button-activated request.
- Hands-free requests: the TV or streaming device listens for a wake phrase without requiring a button press. Google documents this mode as requiring an enabled microphone.
Therefore, disabling the hands-free microphone does not necessarily remove every voice feature. If your remote has a working microphone button, you can generally continue making voice requests by pressing it. The exact behavior depends on the TV, streamer, remote and software version.

Eligibility and setup are separate from hardware
Google says the TV must be added to Google Home for Gemini for TV. Availability can also depend on the device, user profile, region, language and other eligibility requirements. A television with no camera can therefore qualify, while a device with a camera may not qualify if another requirement is not met. Check the current Gemini for TV help page for your specific model and account.
Disable hands-free listening but keep the remote microphone button
This is the appropriate choice if you want voice search or voice commands only when you deliberately press the remote button.
- From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accounts and profiles.
- Choose Your account.
- Open Voice assistant.
- Switch Hands-free mic off.
Google notes that menu wording can vary by device or software release. Look for the Voice assistant section under the currently selected profile if one of these labels is slightly different. Turning this setting off stops the documented hands-free listening mode; it does not physically disconnect or mute every microphone in the TV, remote or streaming device.

If the button request still works, you have retained deliberate voice access while disabling hands-free listening.

Mute or disable the physical microphone
Find which device contains the microphone
The microphone may be located in the television, the streaming box or stick, or the voice remote. Some setups contain more than one microphone. Google directs users to the relevant manufacturer’s manual for the physical mute procedure, so there is no universal button combination or switch that applies to every Google TV product.
- Inspect the TV’s front, side and underside for a microphone icon or hardware mute switch.
- Check the streaming device itself if your Google TV experience comes from an external box or stick.
- Inspect the remote for a microphone opening and a mute slider, button or indicator.
- Use the exact model number when searching the manufacturer’s manual; similarly named models can place controls differently.
A hardware mute normally affects listening by that particular component. For example, muting a remote does not prove that a built-in TV microphone is muted, and muting a TV does not necessarily mute a microphone in a connected streamer. If privacy requires every microphone to be silent, identify each component and follow its own documented mute procedure.
What a physical mute does not change
A physical mute is not the same as turning Gemini for TV off. It changes whether a microphone can capture sound, but it does not remove the TV from Google Home, change the selected assistant or erase previously stored account activity. Use the settings and account controls in the sections below for those separate goals.

Turn Gemini for TV off on the device
Google states that “Gemini for TV doesn’t have a specific on or off switch.” Instead, Google’s documented way to stop Gemini for TV on that television is to remove the TV from Google Home.

- Open the Google Home app or the Google Home controls you use to manage the television.
- Find the TV in your home’s device list.
- Use the device management option to remove that TV from Google Home.
- Complete the confirmation prompts, then check the TV’s assistant behavior.
According to Google, the TV uses Google Assistant after it is removed from Google Home. This is a service-selection change, not a microphone mute. If the objective is simply to stop wake-word listening, turn off Hands-free mic instead; removing the TV from Google Home is broader because it changes the assistant associated with the device.
Removing a TV can also affect other Google Home features that depend on the TV being registered in that home. If you later want Gemini for TV again, you may need to add and configure the TV in Google Home and meet the current eligibility requirements.
Choose the control that matches your goal

Manage saved voice activity and Google TV data
Delete Gemini interactions saved under Google Assistant
Microphone settings govern future listening; they do not automatically delete past activity. Google says that when Web & App Activity is enabled, Gemini for TV interactions are saved under Google Assistant in the Google Account. You can open your Google Account’s Google Assistant activity controls and delete recorded activity there. The available deletion choices and retention settings are account controls, separate from the TV’s hands-free switch.

- Watchlist and watch activity
- Approximate location
- User and device identifiers
- Interactions with apps and installed apps
- Crash logs and diagnostics
- Analytics and information used for personalization
Google says data is encrypted in transit. These service-data categories do not establish a camera requirement. A camera can be connected as a smart-home device, but Google’s description of Google TV service data does not say that Gemini for TV needs camera images.
Troubleshoot common microphone and assistant problems
The hands-free option is missing
Confirm that you are using the profile associated with the TV and open the Voice assistant section under that profile. Menu labels can differ between devices and software versions. Also check Gemini for TV eligibility: Google lists device, profile, region, language and other requirements. If the feature is not available for your setup, there may be no hands-free switch to display.
The TV still reacts after hands-free mic is off
First determine which device reacted. A connected streamer, remote or nearby smart speaker may have its own microphone and assistant. Turn off or mute the microphone on the responding product using its manual. Also check whether you accidentally pressed the remote microphone button; the hands-free setting does not prevent an intentional button-activated request.

Turning off hands-free access should not be treated as a universal remote mute. Check the remote’s batteries, pairing and physical mute switch, then verify that the remote is the one paired with the active TV profile. If the remote itself has been muted, follow its product manual to restore button-activated voice input.
You removed the TV from Google Home but still hear Gemini references
Give the account and device time to update, then restart the TV and check which assistant is shown in its settings. Google’s documented outcome is that the TV uses Google Assistant after removal. If another Google TV device remains in the same room, make sure you are testing the intended television rather than a separate speaker, streamer or display.
Practical privacy checklist
- Decide whether you need remote-button voice requests; if yes, disable only Hands-free mic.
- Locate every possible microphone: TV, streamer and remote.
- Use each manufacturer’s documented hardware mute when a physical disconnect is required.
- Remove the TV from Google Home when your goal is to stop Gemini for TV itself, understanding that Google Assistant will be used afterward.
- Review and delete Google Assistant activity separately if you want to remove stored interactions.
- Do not connect a camera solely for Gemini; Google does not list one as a requirement.
The Bottom Line
Gemini for TV needs no camera, and hands-free microphone listening is optional. Turn off Hands-free mic to keep only remote-button voice requests, use the device manual for a physical microphone mute, or remove the TV from Google Home to switch away from Gemini for TV entirely.
