Galaxy Watch LTE models have a built-in eSIM, not a removable SIM card. Bluetooth-only models do not support cellular service. To use LTE, you also need a compatible carrier plan; availability depends on your exact watch model, carrier and country.
How Galaxy Watch SIM and cellular options work
Galaxy Watch comes in Bluetooth-only and LTE versions. Samsung says LTE models can receive calls and messages without being tethered to a smartphone, but that capability requires compatible cellular service. The watch’s eSIM is built into the LTE model and is activated digitally; you do not insert a plastic SIM into the watch. Samsung’s US activation guide refers to a SIM in the phone as part of its setup process—that is the phone’s SIM, not a watch SIM.

Bluetooth-only models
A Bluetooth-only Galaxy Watch connects to a phone and does not have eSIM cellular capability. It cannot be made into an LTE model by adding a SIM or changing a setting.

LTE models
An LTE model has an embedded eSIM, but owning one does not automatically provide mobile service. You must activate an eligible plan, and the carrier, watch model and local service rules determine whether it can operate independently or only as a companion to a phone. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch6 specifications say standalone LTE is limited to LTE models, requires initial pairing with an eligible Android 10.0-or-later smartphone and a separate qualifying plan, and may not be supported by every carrier or area.

How to tell whether your Galaxy Watch supports LTE
Do not rely on the generation name alone: a product family can include Bluetooth and LTE variants. Check the exact watch in its settings. Samsung Germany’s guidance says an EID or IMEI indicates LTE capability; Bluetooth-only models do not have those identifiers. Samsung Germany’s eSIM guidance describes the distinction.
- On the watch, open Settings > About watch > Status info.
- Look for an EID or IMEI. Their presence indicates LTE capability; their absence is consistent with a Bluetooth-only model.
- If needed, check the watch’s exact model number and the product listing or Samsung support information for your country before purchasing or arranging service.
Samsung’s US guide also documents finding EID, IMEI or ICCID through watch settings or the Galaxy Wearable app. Which identifiers appear can depend on the model or activation status, so a missing identifier may warrant checking the exact model with Samsung rather than relying on one screen alone.

What to check before buying an LTE Galaxy Watch
Verify both device compatibility and the kind of service your carrier offers. “LTE” on the watch means it has cellular hardware; it does not promise standalone calling, a particular plan, or service in every location.
- Exact watch variant: Confirm the specific model is LTE, not Bluetooth-only.
- Country and carrier: Ask whether the carrier supports that watch model and can activate it in your region.
- Plan structure: Check whether the plan shares or links the phone’s number, and whether it permits use when the phone is not nearby. A qualifying plan may be separate from the phone plan.
- Standalone limits: Confirm whether the carrier supports independent watch service or only a companion-device connection.
Carrier availability is country-specific. Samsung’s US activation guidance names AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, but that list is not universal. In Canada, Samsung’s Galaxy Watch7 LTE page lists Bell, Virgin Mobile, Rogers and Telus for companion connected-device activation and says those watches cannot be activated as standalone devices. These examples illustrate why you should confirm current local eligibility directly with your carrier.

How LTE activation works
Samsung’s US instructions start with the watch paired to a compatible phone, then use Galaxy Wearable to reach the carrier activation flow. The phone needs a SIM and an internet connection for the described process; that SIM remains in the phone.
- Pair the Galaxy Watch with a compatible phone.
- Open Galaxy Wearable and select Watch settings or Home > Mobile plans, depending on the app version.
- Follow the carrier prompts to check eligibility and activate the watch’s eSIM and plan.
For the US setup flow documented by Samsung Support, the phone is specified as Android 5.0 or later with at least 1.5 GB of RAM, plus a SIM and internet connection. Those are requirements in that support guidance, not a guarantee that every market, carrier or later watch uses identical requirements. Carrier activation steps and plan terms vary.

What happens when your phone is not with you?
An activated LTE watch can use cellular connectivity for calls and messages without being tethered to the phone, as Samsung describes for LTE models. Whether it can do so as a standalone device depends on the plan and carrier. Bluetooth-only models have no watch cellular connection, and an LTE watch without an activated eligible plan should not be treated as independently connected.
