Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For typical fiber-to-the-home service, you do not need a separate cable or DSL modem when the provider has installed an optical network terminal (ONT). The ONT terminates the fiber connection; a separate router or gateway then routes traffic to your home devices and usually provides Wi-Fi. Some providers combine those functions in one device, so check what equipment your service already includes before buying anything.
What does each device do?
Optical network terminal (ONT)
The ONT connects to the fiber line and converts its optical signal into a network connection your home equipment can use. Openreach describes it as doing “the job a traditional modem used to do” (Openreach equipment guidance). That comparison is useful, but an ONT is fiber-specific termination equipment, not necessarily a Wi-Fi router.

Router or residential gateway
When the ONT and router are separate, the router connects to the ONT and manages traffic between the provider connection and devices in your home. It commonly supplies Wi-Fi as well as wired Ethernet connections. Singapore’s IMDA describes the ONT as converting the optical signal for a residential gateway that also functions as a router (IMDA consumer guide to home networks).

Provider terminology can be confusing: a device called a gateway may combine ONT and router functions, while another setup uses a separate ONT and router. Orange documents both arrangements in its equipment lineup (Orange equipment guidance). The practical question is what the supplied unit actually does, not whether a provider informally calls it a “fiber modem.”

How do you connect a separate ONT and router?
- Find the Ethernet port on the ONT and the WAN or Internet port on the router.
- Connect those ports with an Ethernet cable. Openreach describes this direct ONT-to-router arrangement in its setup guidance (Openreach ONT guidance; router setup guidance).
- Follow the provider’s instructions to configure the router, then connect home devices over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
A cable may be needed if one was not supplied or you do not already have a suitable one. The ONT-to-router cable is not a substitute for the router: the ONT terminates the fiber service, while the router provides the home-network functions.
Should you buy your own router?
A personal router can be suitable when your provider has installed a separate ONT and has not supplied a router or gateway that meets your needs. Compatibility is provider-specific. Before buying, check with your provider for:

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- A compatible WAN port and the speed it must support.
- Any required authentication or VLAN settings.
- Whether voice or other provider services depend on the supplied gateway.
Brightspeed permits customers to choose a router for its fiber service, but that guidance does not establish universal compatibility (Brightspeed equipment guidance). Ask your own provider what will work with your connection and services.

Do you need a mesh system?
No—not to terminate fiber or get a working internet connection. Mesh Wi-Fi is an optional way to address poor wireless coverage after the fiber connection and router are working. It does not replace the ONT, and it is unnecessary if your existing Wi-Fi coverage is adequate.

Should you keep the installed ONT?
Yes, unless your network operator tells you otherwise. For Openreach full fiber, the ONT and fixed installation equipment should remain in place when you switch providers or change routers. Openreach warns that removing or tampering with the equipment can interrupt service and may require a call-out to reinstall it (Openreach ONT guidance). If your service uses another network, follow that provider’s instructions.
