Does Everything Search File Contents or Just File Names?

Everything’s normal search is an index of file and folder names. Add content: to search inside files, knowing that contents are not indexed and format support depends on text extraction components.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Everything does both, but in two different ways. Its normal, famously fast search uses an index of file and folder names (including paths). To search words inside documents, add the content: function, such as content:garlic. File contents are not part of Everything’s index, so content searches read matching candidate files when you run the search and can be much slower.

What Everything searches by default

Everything’s core job is locating files and folders by their names and paths. It builds an index of names on local NTFS volumes, which is why typing part of a filename normally produces results almost immediately. A query can match a complete name, part of a name, a folder name, or a path segment. The indexed data is metadata about where items are and what they are called, not a continuously maintained copy of the text inside each document.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction explains the usual Everything experience. If you remember that a report was called budget-2025.docx, or that it was stored somewhere under a folder named Finance, an ordinary search is the right tool. You are asking the name-and-path index to find candidates, so Everything can avoid opening every file on disk.

The official usage guidance describes indexing local NTFS volumes. That should not be read as a promise that every drive, network location, removable volume, or file type is automatically covered. Whether a location appears in results depends on how Everything is configured and whether the volume is one it can index. The name index also says nothing about whether text extraction is available for a particular document format.

How to search inside a file

Use the content: search function followed by the word or text you want to find. Everything then examines file contents instead of relying only on names. For example:

  • *.docx recipe content:garlic limits candidates to Word documents whose names match recipe, then looks for garlic in their contents.
  • *.pdf \downloads content:invoice limits the search to PDF files under a Downloads path and looks for invoice inside them.

The other terms in those examples are important. An extension narrows the kind of file Everything must open, a name term removes unrelated candidates, and a path term limits where Everything has to look. You can adapt the same pattern to a project folder, archive directory, or another known location. Starting with a narrow candidate set is generally more practical than asking Everything to inspect every document on every indexed volume.

A content query is still a normal Everything query in the sense that you can combine it with identifying information. If you know only that the file is a PDF, use the PDF extension. If you know a distinctive word in its filename, include that word. If you know the folder, include the path. These constraints do not make file text part of the name index; they simply reduce the files that need to be opened for the content check.

Filename search versus content search

Aspect Ordinary Everything search content: search
What is matched File and folder names, plus their paths Text found inside candidate files
Indexing Names are indexed for fast lookup File contents are not indexed
Typical speed The fast, everyday workflow Can be slow because files are read during the search
Format handling Only the item’s name and path are needed Requires native text handling, an installed system IFilter, or direct text fallback
Best use Finding a known or partly remembered filename or location Finding an unknown filename by a word or phrase in its document text

Why content searches can be slow

Everything does not pre-read and store the text of every file in its index. When you submit a content query, it has to access the candidate files and inspect their text. The official guide warns that this can be extremely slow, particularly when the candidate set is large. The difference is fundamental: an indexed name lookup compares your query with prepared index data, while a content search performs file access and text examination at query time.

Performance therefore depends more on how many files qualify than on the length of the word you typed. A query that restricts results to a single extension and known folder may finish reasonably quickly. A broad content query across many folders can involve a large amount of reading, even if the search term is uncommon. There is no universal speed guarantee, and the documentation’s incidental indexing examples should not be treated as a benchmark for your own content search.

Use narrowing filters before adding content:. An extension such as *.pdf avoids testing unrelated files; a path term avoids opening files outside the relevant directory; a distinctive filename term removes more candidates. If you also know when the file was changed, apply a modified-date restriction using Everything’s documented search syntax. The principle is to shrink the candidate list first, then inspect contents.

Which file formats can be searched?

Plain text files

Standard text files are supported natively. Their contents can be read directly, so a content query can look for words in formats such as ordinary text documents without requiring an additional document filter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Formats that need an IFilter

For many document formats, Everything relies on the system’s installed IFilters to extract readable text. An IFilter is a Windows text-extraction component associated with a file type. If the appropriate filter is installed and functioning, Everything can ask it for the document’s text and test that text against your content: term. The exact result therefore depends on both the format and the software components installed on that Windows system.

Fallback direct-text scanning

When an IFilter is unavailable, Everything can fall back to searching the file directly as text. That fallback is not equivalent to a full parser for every format. It may be useful for files whose data is genuinely text, but it should not be treated as proof that every binary, compressed, encrypted, or otherwise specialized document will be interpreted correctly. A format may appear in the filename index while its internal words remain unavailable to content search.

Why two computers can behave differently

Because extraction can depend on installed IFilters and system configuration, the same extension may produce different content-search results on two machines. One system may have a suitable filter; another may not. If Everything finds a document by name but does not find a word you can visibly read inside it, format support and text extraction are the first things to check rather than assuming the name index is broken.

A practical content-search procedure

  1. Identify the likely format. Decide whether the file is plain text, a Word document, a PDF, or another known type. Add the extension when you know it.
  2. Restrict the location. Include the folder or path where the file is expected. This prevents an unnecessary scan of unrelated directories.
  3. Add a filename clue. If you remember any part of the name, include it. Even a partial name can substantially reduce the candidate set.
  4. Add the content function. Append content: and the word you expect to occur inside the file, as in *.docx recipe content:garlic.
  5. Allow for a slower pass. Content inspection reads files after the candidates are selected. A delay is normal compared with an indexed filename search.
  6. Validate the result. Open a returned file and confirm that the term occurs in the intended context. A match indicates text was found, not that the document is the only possible source.

If the first query is too broad, do not immediately conclude that content search is unusable. Add a path, extension, remembered filename fragment, or modified-date constraint and run it again. Each restriction reduces the amount of file content Everything must inspect.

What to do when a word is not found

Check that you used content:

An ordinary query containing a word searches names and paths. It will not automatically look for that word in the body of every document. Confirm that the query explicitly includes the content: function.

Check the candidate filters

A restrictive extension or path can accidentally exclude the file. Remove one restriction at a time, then add it back after you confirm the broader query finds the document. Remember that the path and filename parts of the query control which files are inspected; they do not describe text inside the document.

Check text extraction support

If the file appears by name but its visible text is not matched, the format may require an IFilter that is not installed or is not working. Everything’s fallback direct-text scan may also be unsuitable for that format. Results can therefore be format- and configuration-dependent rather than a simple indication that the word is absent.

Check the volume and configuration

The documented index covers local NTFS volumes, but coverage is still a configuration question. A file on a volume or location that Everything is not indexing may not be a candidate at all. Verify that the relevant location is included before troubleshooting the document parser.

When to use each search mode

  • Use ordinary search when you know any part of the filename, folder name, or path. This uses the indexed data and is the fastest workflow.
  • Use content search when the filename is unknown but a distinctive word appears inside the file.
  • Combine both when you know a little about the name, type, or location as well as the internal text. This is usually the best balance between finding the right file and limiting scan time.
  • Verify format support before relying on content results for a specialized document type. Name indexing can work even when text extraction does not.

In short, Everything is not a full-time content indexer. Its speed comes from indexing names and paths; its content feature is an on-demand inspection tool. Treat the two modes as complementary rather than interchangeable.

What “indexed” means here

An indexed filename search can answer questions about identity and location: what an item is called, which folder contains it, and which path matches your terms. A content search answers a different question: whether readable text can be extracted from a candidate file and contains your term at the moment Everything examines it. Since that text is not stored in the main index, content searches do not have the same speed characteristics as name searches.

This model also explains why a document can be easy to find by name but difficult to find by a sentence inside it. The first task uses the data Everything prepares for fast lookup. The second depends on opening the file, selecting an extraction method, and successfully reading the relevant text. Those are separate capabilities with separate failure modes.

Bottom line

Everything primarily searches an index of file and folder names, which is why its normal search is so fast. It can also search file contents when you add content:, but contents are not indexed, so the operation can be slow. Narrow the candidate set with an extension, path, filename clue, or modified-date filter, and remember that non-text formats depend on installed IFilters or the program’s direct-text fallback. The reliable rule is: search names by default; request content searching explicitly when the word you need is inside the file.
